The application of headspace gas chromatographic method for the determination of ethyl alcohol in craft beers, wines and soft drinks.

The increasing interest of consumers in the still-developing craft beer market and the strict tax-related legal regulations concerning alcoholic beverages require precise methods for quality control. Determination of ethyl alcohol concentration was performed in 167 samples of alcoholic beverages (craft beers, soft drinks, wines, and cider). We applied headspace gas chromatography using a dual column/dual flame ionization detector (HS-GC-FID/FID), a technique routinely used in forensic toxicology. The method was linear in range, from 0.01 to 20.0%, with a coefficient of determination of 0.999 (

Harnessing yeast metabolism of aromatic amino acids for fermented beverage bioflavouring and bioproduction.

Aromatic amino acid metabolism in yeast is an important source of secondary compounds that influence the aroma and flavour of alcoholic beverages and foods. Examples are the higher alcohol 2-phenylethanol, and its acetate ester, 2-phenylethyl acetate, which impart desirable floral aromas in wine, beer and baker's products. Beyond this well-known influence on the organoleptic properties of alcoholic beverages and foods, there is a growing interest in understanding and modulating yeast aromatic amino acid metabolism. The tryptophan derivatives melatonin and serotonin have bioactive properties an

The Effect of Alcohol on Blood Pressure and Hypertension.

PURPOSE: To examine the acute and chronic effects of alcohol on blood pressure (BP) and the incidence of hypertension. We discuss the most current understanding of the mechanisms underlining these effects and their associations with the putative cardioprotective effects of consumption of low-to-moderate amounts of alcoholic beverages. RECENT FINDINGS: A recent meta-analysis confirmed findings of experimental studies, demonstrating an acute biphasic effect of ethanol on BP, decreasing up to 12 h of ingestion and increasing after that. This effect is mediated by vagal inhibition and sympathetic

Habitual sweet and bitter beverage consumption in relation to the risk of frailty and sarcopenia-related traits: a Mendelian randomization study.

Previous studies have associated different beverage types with frailty and sarcopenia, it remains uncertain whether these associations are causal. This Mendelian randomization study aimed to investigate the causal effects of various beverage consumption on frailty and sarcopenia-related traits. Independent genetic variants strongly (P < 5E-8) associated with sweet and bitter beverages and their subtypes were used as instrumental variables. Summary-level data from recent genome-wide association studies on frailty index (FI), appendicular lean mass (ALM), and low hand grip strength (LHGS) were u

Effects of brand-matched alcoholic and alcohol-free and low-alcohol drinks adverts on drink selections: A United Kingdom-based randomised controlled trial in an experimental online supermarket.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Restricting alcohol advertising may reduce alcohol consumption and related ill-health. However, advertisements for alcohol-free and low-alcohol drinks (NoLos) with brand-matched alcoholic versions are typically exempt from restrictions, which could lead to surrogate marketing (adverts for NoLo beverages also promoting brand-matched alcoholic options). This study measured the impact of advertisements for brand-matched NoLo beverages on product selections in a simulated online supermarket, in the UK. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTION: We conducted a randomised

Thiamin in beer: a health promotion perspective.

Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) is a serious disease resulting from excessive alcohol intake. As well as the disastrous consequences for the individual, patients with WE place a heavy burden for continuing care on the community. Australia appears to have a higher rate of WE than other western countries, probably due to differences in the consumption patterns of alcoholic beverages. Unlike most other western countries, Australia does not fortify flour with thiamin. On the other hand the USA does fortify flour and has higher thiamin intakes and lower rates of WE. In Australia it has been proposed

The challenge of unrecorded alcohol consumption in Argentina: estimation and key predictors.

Background: Unrecorded alcohol refers to alcoholic beverages produced and consumed outside the formal market. Unrecorded consumption is a global issue with multiple implications that remains under-explored in Latin America, where most estimations rely on global statistical models and surveys, with a need for country-level estimations. Objectives: To 1) characterize unrecorded consumption in Argentina, describing the percentage of the population consuming unrecorded alcohol and the annual per capita consumption, 2) explore the types and quantities of unrecorded alcoholic beverages consumed, and

Patterns of beverages consumption and prevalence of non-communicable chronic diseases.

Beverages consumption influences diet quality in general and has been associated with the development of non-communicable chronic diseases (NCCD). We aimed to verify the association between beverage consumption patterns and the prevalence of NCCD. A cross-sectional household and population-based study was conducted with 489 individuals aged 20 years and older. The presence of NCCD (arterial hypertension, diabetes, cancer and hypercholesterolemia) was obtained by self-report, while obesity was diagnosed by measuring body weight, height and waist circumference. Beverage consumption patterns were

How people decide to consume (more) alcohol when feeling stressed.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The tension reduction hypothesis suggests that people consume alcohol to alleviate stress. While previous studies showed stress increases alcohol's absolute value, alcohol's value relative to alternatives should be more relevant for drinking decisions. We aimed to test whether acute stress causes individuals to choose alcohol over appealing non-alcoholic alternatives and to identify the cognitive mechanisms underlying this choice behavior. DESIGN: Laboratory-based randomized 2 × 2 experimental study. SETTING: Controlled laboratory environment including a simulated bar se

Anterior cingulate and medial prefrontal cortex alcohol cue reactivity varies as a function of drink preference in alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Functional MRI visual cue reactivity studies have not considered that brain responses to various alcohol-containing beverage types may vary as a function of an individual's drinking patterns and preferences. This study tested whether the brain's reward system responds differently to visual cues associated with an individuals' most commonly consumed ("preferred") alcohol beverage compared with less commonly consumed ("non-preferred") alcohol beverages in individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD). METHODS: Participants (N=70) with current AUD completed a standard visual alcohol cu

[Effect of of alcohol on male sex glands].

The influence of alcohol on the sexual glands was studied in 708 males. The control group consisted of 138 individuals who denied alcohol consumption. The age of the individuals studied was 21-50. It was established that alcoholic beverages evoke degenerative changes in the sexual glands which are more pronounced in males who began to consume alcoholic beverages in the period of sexual function formation. Degenerative changes are more distinctly marked in males with a history of epidemic parotitis. Changes in the sexual glands due to the influence of alcohol intoxication lead to disorders of s

Alcohol and gastric acid secretion in humans.

The secretory response of gastric acid to pure ethanol and alcoholic beverages may be different because the action of the non-ethanolic contents of the beverage may overwhelm that of ethanol. Pure ethanol in low concentrations (< 5% vol/vol) is a mild stimulant of acid secretion whereas at higher concentrations it has either no effect or a mildly inhibitory one. Pure ethanol given by any route does not cause release of gastrin in humans. Alcoholic beverages with low ethanol content (beer and wine) are strong stimulants of gastric acid secretion and gastrin release, the effect of beer being equ

Wine consumption is not associated with a decreased risk of alcoholic cirrhosis in heavy drinkers.

AIMS: While it was thought that all alcoholic beverages share a similar liver toxicity when drunk at a high level, recent epidemiological surveys have suggested that wine drinking might decrease the risk of alcoholic cirrhosis in heavy drinkers. Therefore, we performed a study aiming to analyse the type and the intake levels of alcoholic beverages in heavy drinkers according to the severity of the liver disease. METHODS: This is a case-control study enrolling 42 cirrhotic and 60 non-cirrhotic patients. Liver status was assessed using clinical, biological, histological and ultrasonographic pro

The effects of alcohol consumption upon the gastrointestinal tract.

Regardless of the type and dose of beverage involved, alcohol facilitates the development of gastroesophageal reflux disease by reducing the pressure of the lower esophageal sphincter and esophageal motility. Fermented and nondistilled alcoholic beverages increase gastrin levels and acid secretion. Succinic and maleic acid contained in certain alcoholic drinks also stimulate acid secretion. Low alcohol doses accelerate gastric emptying, whereas high doses delay emptying and slow bowel motility. Alcohol facilitates the development of superficial gastritis and chronic atrophic gastritis--though

[Alcohol consumption and cancer risk].

It has been established that alcohol consumption is associated with elevated cancer incidence and mortality. Recently the International Agency for Cancer Research (World Health Organization) stated that acetaldehyde associated with alcoholic beverages is carcinogenic to humans and confirmed the Group 1 classification of alcohol consumption and of ethanol in alcoholic beverages. Alcohol causes cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus, colorectum, liver and female breast. Very little is known about safe margins of alcohol consumption. There is a dose-response relationship between
