Uptake and engagement of a clinically moderated digital peer support platform to support the mental well-being older adults: a qualitative investigation.

BACKGROUND: The uptake of traditional mental health services among older adults remains low. Digital peer support offers older adults a resource for engaging with others to independently support their mental well-being. This qualitative study explored the uptake and engagement of a clinically moderated digital peer support platform (Breathing Space) for older adults with depressive symptoms and alcohol use concerns. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with 30 participants aged 60-80 years explored participants' uptake and engagement with Breathing Space, a novel, moderated, private, and anony

Prevalence of drug use in pregnant West Virginia patients.

INTRODUCTION: Substance abuse in pregnancy is of serious concern to society as well as health care providers caring for pregnant women and their infants. Various studies have suggested a prevalence of 10 -20%. This study used anonymous sampling of umbilical cord tissue to estimate the prevalence of substance abuse in West Virginia. METHODS: For the period of August 2009, as many umbilical cord samples as possible were collected at 8 regionally diverse hospitals in West Virginia. The cord tissue samples were then assayed for amphetamines, cocaine, opiates, marijuana, benzodiazapines, methadone

Male batterers' alcohol use and gambling behavior.

Little work has examined the interrelations among intimate partner violence (IPV), alcohol use, and gambling behavior, and no studies have examined these relationships among males court-ordered to batterer intervention programs (BIPs). The aim of the current investigation was to explore the associations between IPV, alcohol use, and gambling behavior among 341 males court-mandated to attend BIPs utilizing self-report measures. Voluntary, anonymous questionnaires were administered and completed during regularly scheduled BIP sessions. Compared to the general population, a higher percentage of t

The association between comorbidity and outcome in pathological gambling: a prospective follow-up of recent quitters.

A naturalistic sample of pathological gamblers (N = 101) who recently quit gambling was followed prospectively for a year (follow-up rate 80%). Lifetime mood disorders were identified in 61% of participants and 73% and 48% had lifetime alcohol use and drug use disorders, respectively. Current prevalence rates, however, were much lower. Current mood disorders were found for 20% and 7% had a current alcohol disorder and 7% a current drug use disorder. Age of onset for substance use disorders was earlier than gambling disorders but mood disorders were equally likely to predate or follow gambling

Social context, perceived norms and drinking behavior in young people.

An anonymous questionnaire was administered to 1,283 middle school/high school students and 930 college students. The students responded to instruments assessing social context of drinking, perceived norms of drinking, alcohol use intensity, and frequencies of impaired driving (DWI) and riding with an impaired driver (RWID). Canonical correlation analyses revealed that in middle school/high school students, there are discernable patterns of association between social context, perceived norm and alcohol abuse measures. Drinking intensity for self was closely related to several social context va

Frequency of Hazardous and Binge Drinking Alcohol Among Hospitalized Cardiovascular Patients.

Excessive alcohol use is a risk factor for most cardiac diseases. The prevalence of unhealthy alcohol use among hospitalized cardiac patients is uncertain as is the frequency with which it is addressed. We performed a single center, patient-level anonymous survey among hospitalized cardiac patients eligible for cardiac rehabilitation. Hazardous drinking was defined as an Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) score of 8 or greater. Binge drinking was defined as 5+ drinks for men or 4+ for women on ≥1 occasion within the past 30 days. Unhealthy drinking was defined as either hazardou

Examining sexual orientation disparities in alcohol misuse among women veterans.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol misuse is a significant health concern among women veterans, especially among lesbian and bisexual veterans. Mediators that might explain alcohol disparities between heterosexual and sexual minority veterans have not yet been identified. PURPOSE: To examine the role of civilian and military traumas and mental health symptoms (i.e., depression, post-traumatic stress disorder) in explaining sexual orientation disparities in alcohol misuse between sexual minority and heterosexual women veterans across the U.S. METHODS: Women veterans were recruited using Internet methods to

Pathway from child sexual and physical abuse to risky sex among emerging adults: the role of trauma-related intrusions and alcohol problems.

PURPOSE: Some evidence suggests that risk reduction programming for sexual risk behaviors (SRB) has been minimally effective, which emphasized the need for research on etiological and mechanistic factors that can be addressed in prevention and intervention programming. Childhood sexual and physical abuse have been linked with SRB among older adolescents and emerging adults; however, pathways to SRB remain unclear. This study adds to the literature by testing a model specifying that traumatic intrusions after early abuse may increase risk for alcohol problems, which in turn may increase the lik

Excessive alcohol consumption increases risk taking behaviour in travellers to Cusco, Peru.

The risks associated with alcohol intoxication are rarely discussed during pre-travel counselling. However, alcohol immoderation abroad may increase the exposure to health risks. Few studies have addressed alcohol consumption and risk taking behaviour in travellers to South America. From October to December of 2004, travellers leaving the city of Cusco in Peru were asked to fill out anonymous questionnaires regarding demographics, self-reported alcohol consumption, illness and risk behaviour for sexually-transmitted infection (STI) and travellers diarrhoea. Most travellers (87.2%) consumed alc

Alcohol use, intimate partner violence, and suicide-related thoughts and behaviors among U.S. service members and veterans who experienced military sexual assault.

OBJECTIVE: Survivors of military sexual assault (MSA) are at risk for experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV) and alcohol misuse. IPV and MSA survivors are also at elevated risk for suicide-related thoughts and behaviors (SRTB) compared to those without MSA. Heightened risk for suicide may occur through higher alcohol misuse, an association that may be significantly stronger among males given their higher propensity for both alcohol misuse and death by suicide. The present study examined whether alcohol use was a mechanism of the association between IPV experience and SRTB, and whether th

Quantifying alcohol use among Ecuadorian human immunodeficiency virus positive individuals and assessing alcohol as an independent risk factor for human immunodeficiency virus: A case control study STROBE.

Alcohol abuse has been identified as a risk factor for contracting human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and accelerating disease progression. Our study aims to determine alcohol consumption rates among Ecuadorian HIV positive (HIV+) patients prior to diagnosis to evaluate its impact as an independent risk factor for contracting HIV. Additionally, we will examine post-diagnosis consumption rates among the HIV+ population. We provided anonymous questionnaires to 300 HIV+ patients and 600 internal medicine patients at 3 hospitals in Quito, Ecuador. Questionnaires quantified alcohol usage prior to HI

Non-physiological mechanisms influencing disulfiram treatment of alcohol use disorder: A grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: The mechanism of action of disulfiram is not clear and recent systematic reviews have reached differing conclusions. The purpose of this research was to develop a conceptual model of the mechanisms that underpin the effective use of disulfiram in management of alcohol used disorder. METHODS: Grounded theory was used, based on anonymized transcripts of in-depth interviews with 14 individual clients who experienced taking disulfiram for alcohol use disorder within the context of a specialized clinic setting from New Zealand. RESULTS: The central concept was that of abstinence being
