Coastal and inland American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) diverge along physiological axes in response to a salinity gradient.

Ecotypes often occupy an environmental gradient, which can lead to divergence in physiological traits between ecotypes. We tested the hypothesis that alligators from inland and coastal environments have physiologically and genetically diverged from one another by exposing coastal and inland alligators to hypo-osmotic (0 PSU), iso-osmotic (10 PSU), and hyper-osmotic (20 PSU) salinities. For each alligator, we measured natremia before and after exposure, 1 behavioural trait, 10 histological traits, and gene expression levels in the liver and kidney. We found little evidence supporting population

Mycobacterium ulcerans ecovar Liflandii infection in new host in a Cuban crocodile (Crocodylus rhombifer).

Mycobacterium ulcerans ecovar Liflandii has recently been described as the causative agent of fatal disease in different frog species. This is the first report of this pathogen in a Cuban crocodile (Crocodylus rhombifer), which died suddenly in a Hungarian zoo. The authors' findings suggest that M. ulcerans ecovar Liflandii does not exclusively infects anurans and highlights the zoonotic risk posed by this emerging pathogen.

Active crocodiles are less sociable.

How animals move and associate with conspecifics is rarely random, with a population's spatial structure forming the foundation on which the social behaviours of individuals form. Studies examining the spatial-social interface typically measure averaged behavioural differences between individuals; however, this neglects the inherent variation present within individuals and how it may impact the spatial-social interface. Here, we investigated differences in among-individual (co)variance in sociability, activity and site fidelity in a population of wild estuarine crocodiles, Crocodylus porosus,

Functional and phylogenetic signals in the pectoral girdle of Thalattosuchia and Dyrosauridae (Crocodylomorpha).

Crocodylomorphs have colonized various environments from fully terrestrial to fully aquatic, making it an important clade among archosaurs. A remarkable example of the rich past diversity of Crocodylomorpha Hay, 1930 is the marine colonization undergone by several crocodylomorph lineages, particularly Thalattosuchia Fraas, 1901 during the Early Jurassic-Early Cretaceous, and Dyrosauridae de Stefano, 1903 during the Late Cretaceous-Early Eocene. Thalattosuchia represents the most impressive and singular marine radiation among Crocodylomorpha, occupying various ecological niches, before enigmati

The velar chord and dynamic integration of the gular valve in crocodylians.

Crocodylians evolved a unique gular valve that is capable of creating a water-tight seal between the oral and pharyngeal cavities, allowing the animal to safely submerge with an open mouth. The gular valve has traditionally been described as consisting of two separate parts: an active mobile ventral portion (consisting of the tongue and portions of the hyolingual apparatus) and a dorsal portion, which is a static fold on the hard palate (often termed the palatal velum). The results of the present study argue that the two portions of the gular valve are functionally integrated, not separate, an

Proteomic analysis of the mandibular glands from the Chinese crocodile lizard, Shinisaurus crocodilurus - Another venomous lizard?

Based on its phylogenetic relationship to monitor lizards (Varanidae), Gila monsters (Heloderma spp.), and the earless monitor Lanthanotus borneesis, the Chinese crocodile lizard, Shinisaurus crocodilurus, has been assigned to the Toxicofera clade, which comprises venomous reptiles. However, no data about composition and biological activities of its oral secretion have been reported. In the present study, a proteomic analysis of the mandibular gland of S. crocodilurus and, for comparison, of the herbivorous Solomon Island skink Corucia zebrata, was performed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)

Protected fish spawning aggregations as self-replenishing reservoirs for regional recovery.

Dispersal of eggs and larvae from spawning sites is critical to the population dynamics and conservation of marine fishes. For overfished species like critically endangered Nassau grouper (Epinephelus striatus), recovery depends on the fate of eggs spawned at the few remaining aggregation sites. Biophysical models can predict larval dispersal, yet these rely on assumed values of key parameters, such as diffusion and mortality rates, which have historically been difficult or impossible to estimate. We used in situ imaging to record three-dimensional positions of individual eggs and larvae in pr

Characterisation of sperm production and morphology in the male Philippine crocodile Crocodylus mindorensis via voluntary behavioural training.

Philippine crocodiles Crocodylus mindorensis are critically endangered due to agricultural and fishing threats that have severely fragmented their habitat and population in the Philippines. Captive management plans are important to safeguard against their extinction, but the current population in US zoos is small, and breeding is hampered by the slow growth of this species and the danger of introducing differently sized animals for breeding. There is little information regarding the sperm characteristics of crocodilians, and none for Philippine crocodiles. In this study, we sought to character

Hematology and Biochemistry Reference Intervals for American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) in South Florida, USA.

We calculated reference intervals for 48 blood parameters from 120 wild American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) in South Florida, US. Although previously reported by others, this study includes additional parameters not yet reported in wild populations. Most previously reported blood parameter values were similar to ours and fell within our reference intervals.

Architecture of the bronchial tree in Cuvier's dwarf caiman (Paleosuchus palpebrosus).

We imaged the lungs of five Cuvier's dwarf caiman (Paleosuchus palpebrosus) via computed tomography (CT) and micro-computed tomography (μCT) and compared these data to the lungs of the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis). These data demonstrate anatomical commonalities between the lungs of P. palpebrosus and A. mississippiensis, and a few notable differences. The structural similarities are (a) a proximally narrow, distally widened, hook-shaped primary bronchus; (b) a cervical ventral bronchus that branches of the primary bronchus and immediately makes a hairpin turn toward the ape

A rare case of partial skull and brain duplication in a hatchling Alligator mississippiensis.

Errors in development occur in all vertebrates. When severe, these anomalies are lethal and frequently escape attention. In rare cases, animals with profound malformations are born and can provide a glimpse into structures and their respective function that would otherwise go unnoticed. A rare abnormality in a hatchling Alligator mississippiensis is described in which duplication of the skull, face, and brain was incomplete. The rostral skull, face, and associated forebrain, including the olfactory apparatus, were duplicated. However, the caudal skull and brainstem were not. These observations

Early life differences in behavioral predispositions in two Alligatoridae species.

Behavioral predispositions are innate tendencies of animals to behave in a given way without the input of learning. They increase survival chances and, due to environmental and ecological challenges, may vary substantially even between closely related taxa. These differences are likely to be especially pronounced in long-lived species like crocodilians. This order is particularly relevant for comparative cognition due to its phylogenetic proximity to birds. Here we compared early life behavioral predispositions in two Alligatoridae species. We exposed American alligator and spectacled caiman h

Arterial wall thickening normalizes arterial wall tension with growth in American alligators, Alligator mississippiensis.

Arterial wall tension increases with luminal radius and arterial pressure. Hence, as body mass (Mb) increases, associated increases in radius induces larger tension. Thus, it could be predicted that high tension would increase the potential for rupture of the arterial wall. Studies on mammals have focused on systemic arteries and have shown that arterial wall thickness increases with Mb and normalizes tension. Reptiles are good models to study scaling because some species exhibit large body size range associated with growth, thus, allowing for ontogenetic comparisons. We used post hatch Americ

Evidence of determinate growth in an American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) based on long-term recapture and osteohistological confirmation.

Despite the general perception that crocodilians exhibit indeterminate growth, recent long-term field studies and laboratory investigations have independently suggested that growth in these animals is determinate. In this study, we had the unique opportunity to examine skeletal growth in a wild adult American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) based on change in body length measurements (snout-vent length) in the field and confirm these findings using osteohistological analyses (presence/absence of an external fundamental system [EFS]) of long bones. The alligator was captured and measured

Alligator appendicular architecture across an ontogenetic niche shift.

A variety of species undergo ontogenetic niche shifts in either diet, habitat, or both. As a result, multiple ontogenetic stages are able to take advantage of different resources and live in sympatry without competing with one another. The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) begins to undergo an ontogenetic niche shift in both diet and habitat at a length of 1.2 m. They transition from a terrestrial wetland environment to a riverine environment and take advantage of different dietary resources. At 1.8 m, A. mississippiensis reaches sexual maturity. Ontogenetic shifts in habitat hav
