For centuries, scientists have pondered why people would help others at a cost to themselves even in the absence of expectation for future benefit. While a growing body of neuroimaging studies has suggested that the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) may be particularly critical for the regulation of altruistic behavior. However, evidence is still lacking in the field of neuroscience regarding the causal link between the region of vmPFC and pure altruistic behavior. In the present study, we designed a modified dictator game with a binary choice in the contexts of gain and loss that aimed t

Severe malaria, hemorrhage during childbirth, sickle cell anemia, injury from road accidents, and other medical conditions that necessitate blood transfusions affect thousands of Ugandans every year. However, only 0.3-0.5% of the population donates blood, which is less than half of the proportion recommended by the World Health Organization to maintain a sufficient supply in blood banks and health facilities. In January 2018, Uganda faced crisis level blood shortages, increasing preventable deaths in the country as patients lacked access to life-saving transfusions. To understand the factors t

Over the past decade, many ingenious, small-scale gadgets have appeared in response to problems of disaster and extreme poverty. Focusing on the LifeStraw, a water filtration device invented by the company Vestergaard Frandsen, I situate this wave of humanitarian design relative to Marianne de Laet and Annemarie Mol's classic article on the Zimbabwe Bush Pump. The LifeStraw shares the Bush Pump's principle of technical minimalism, as well as its ethical desire to improve the lives of communities. Unlike the pump, however, the straw defines itself through rather than against market logic, accep

For generations, we have operated on the assumption that human beings are fundamentally selfish, and so we have built systems and organizations around monetary incentives, rewards, and punishments. That hasn't always worked very well. Now the tide is starting to turn. In fields such as evolutionary biology, psychology, sociology, political science, and experimental economics, researchers are seeing evidence that human beings are more cooperative and behave far less selfishly than we have long assumed. The success achieved by such collaborative offerings as Wikipedia, Craigslist, Facebook, and

Almost 60,000 people in the United States with end stage renal disease are waiting for a kidney transplant. Because of the scarcity of organs from deceased donors live kidney donors have become a critical source of organs; in 2001, for the first time in recent decades, the number of live kidney donors exceeded the number of deceased donors. The paradigm used to justify putting live kidney donors at risk includes the low risk to the donor, the favorable risk-benefit ratio, the psychological benefits to the donor, altruism, and autonomy coupled with informed consent; because each of these argume

Between 1554 and 2021, the number of and mortality from epidemics in Amsterdam decreased sharply. The decrease in epidemic outbreaks, such as those of plague, smallpox and cholera, paralleled the decrease in chronic mortality from endemic ailments and diseases, such as tuberculosis, malaria and dysentery. There are several theories about the reason for these declines, which are not necessarily mutually exclusive: better nutrition, greater prosperity, increasing altruism, and a growing understanding of cause and effect with targeted medical and public health measures. In the powder keg of chron

... One is struck by the high level of organ procurement charges in spite of the characterization of organ procurement as altruistic. Although the median organ procurement charges in 1988, documented by Evans, ranged from nearly $16,000 to nearly $21,000 (1991 dollars), there was not a penny for the accident victim's/organ donor's family. That some transplant hospitals routinely marked up charges they paid to organ procurement organizations by as much as 200% hardly seems consistent with altruism. Viewed generously, organ recipients and payers on their behalf are being asked to cross-subsidize

Background: Various coping strategies have been shown to alleviate the negative effects of trauma, yet the significance of prosocial behaviour in this realm has been notably underexplored. The present study explored the hypothesis that engaging in prosocial behaviour mitigates the impacts of trauma by promoting a sense of competence and relatedness, post-traumatic growth (PTG), and reconstruction of meaning. Methods: Three consecutive studies were conducted with college students to compare differences in consequence of prosocial behaviours between a trauma group and a control group. New York City experienced a high COVID-19 burden and striking disparities among racial and ethnic minoritized groups. The New York Community Engagement Alliance Against COVID-19 Disparities (NYCEAL) collaborated with health agencies and clinical providers to increase and facilitate COVID-19 vaccinations across New York City. NYCEAL partners and their network of hundreds of community health workers delivered vaccine education, fostered community trust, and supported vaccine uptake among low-income, limited‒English-proficient, and racial and ethnic minoritized communities. Public discourse is rich in meaning, reflecting consensus, dissent, and change. Yet, very little public discourse on the humanitarian sector has been authored by aid workers themselves. We conducted a thematic analysis of the 'Secret Aid Worker' (SAW) series, published in The Guardian newspaper between 2015 and 2018, the only corpus of data on humanitarian life experiences publicly accessible through mainstream media. Our research questions were twofold: how did authors frame their work and appraise humanitarian structures?; and how did they reflect and amplify humanitarian issues of the time?

Since 2001, there has been a growing consensus that sexual exploitation and abuse of intended beneficiaries by humanitarian workers is a real and widespread problem that requires governance. Codes of conduct have been promoted as a key mechanism for governing the sexual behaviour of humanitarian workers and, ultimately, preventing sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA). This article presents a systematic study of PSEA codes of conduct adopted by humanitarian non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and how they govern the sexual behaviour of humanitarian workers. It draws on Foucault's analytics of

BACKGROUND: Allowing players to punish their opponents in Public Goods Game sustains cooperation within a group and thus brings advantage to the cooperative individuals. However, the possibility of punishment of the co-players can result in antisocial punishment, the punishment of those players who contribute the most in the group. To better understand why antisocial punishment exists, it must be determined who are the anti-social punishers and who are their primary targets.
METHODS: For resolving these questions we increased the number of players in a group from usual four to twelve. Each gr

Although cooperation is a widespread phenomenon in nature, human cooperation exceeds that of all other species with regard to the scale and range of cooperative activities. Here we review and discuss differences between humans and non-humans in the strategies employed to maintain cooperation and control free-riders. We distinguish forms of cooperative behaviour based on their influence on the immediate payoffs of actor and recipient. If the actor has immediate costs and only the recipient obtains immediate benefits, we term this investment. If the behaviour has immediate positive effects for b

Since the 1970s, drugs unused by French households have been collected for humanitarian aid. In 1993, the Cyclamed system was created by pharmacists in order to manage and collect unused drugs. However, experience has shown that in developing countries unused drugs caused more problems than they solved, including: poorly adapted to the needs of the population, poor quality of the collected medicines, interferences with local pharmaceutical policies, misappropriation... As recommended by the World Health Organisation, most of the humanitarian organizations stopped unused drug donations. In Fran

Noting the continuing popularity among pastoral theologians of the Good Samaritan as an image of the pastoral caregiver, the author argues that the parable is not really about the obligation of the pastor to offer care but about accepting help from one toward whom one has deeply-engrained prejudicial attitudes and/or hostility. Thus, if the parable is used for insight into the role of function of the pastor, the negative models of the Priest and the Levite are instructive; but if one is looking for a positive pastoral image from among the parables of Jesus, one might consider the image of the

No clear data exists regarding the initiating process of medial care delivery in cases of humanitarian rescue for advanced and debilitating patient conditions. We report on the delivery of care from a hospital located in a rural area in Southern Taiwan to a desperate patient from a country across the world in Lima, Peru. The patient is a 45-year old woman with unilateral severe, progressive primary lymphedema of 26 years who was scheduled to undergo a high femoral amputation for infections, lymphatic leak, inability to ambulate, and symptomatic cardiomegaly. All arrangements for care, includin

We don't see institutional neonatal care as a cold triumph of modern technocracy, but as the peak of an ancient human evolutionary strategy - biosocial cooperation and alloparenting. We trace care for vulnerable newborns from the evolutionary roots and selfless altruism seen in higher primates, through the deconstruction of myths about ancient eugenics with modern paleopathological findings in Greece, all the way to today's neonatal intensive care units. Using the example of kangaroo care and the neurobiological response of medical staff to newborn crying, we show that modern high-tech medicin

Neurosurgical procedures that enable direct brain recordings in awake patients offer unique opportunities to explore the neurophysiology of human speech. The scarcity of these opportunities and the altruism of participating patients compel us to apply the highest rigor to signal analysis. Intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) signals recorded during overt speech can contain a speech artifact that tracks the fundamental frequency (F0) of the participant's voice, involving the same high-gamma frequencies that are modulated during speech production and perception. To address this artifact, w

The Health and Social Care Act 2012 heralded wide reaching reforms intended to place clinicians at the heart of the health service. For NHS general dental practice, the conduits for this clinical leadership are the NHS England local professional networks. In Greater Manchester, the local professional network has developed and piloted a clinician led quality improvement project: 'Healthy Gums DO Matter, a Practitioner's Toolkit'. Used as a case study, the project highlighted the following facilitators to clinical leadership in dentistry: supportive environment; mentoring and transformational le

INTRODUCTION: It is possible in many countries to not only become a living solid organ donor, but to become a serial living solid organ donor, a process in which an individual subsequently donates a liver lobe after donating a kidney, or vice versa. The major ethical issues that surround uncompensated living single solid organ donation (the doctor's duties to respect autonomy, of beneficence, and of non-maleficence) have been well described, and this process is generally considered ethically permissible if the donor has sufficient health, and if their decision is voluntary, fully informed, and
