First documentation of dose response of Amblyomma cf. parvum population infesting dogs to amitraz, coumaphos, and cypermethrin.

Amblyomma cf. parvum (Ixodida: Ixodidae) is an ectoparasite of domestic animals and wildlife on the American continent. There is little information on the efficacy of acaricides for the control of this tick species in domestic animals. Here, we determined the toxicological response of A. cf. parvum to amitraz, coumaphos, and cypermethrin. Engorged females of A. cf. parvum were collected (in two periods, eight months apart) from dogs in Yucatan, Mexico. The larval immersion test was used on the progeny of adult female ticks to test for amitraz susceptibility, and the larval package test was use

First record of the parasitoid wasp Ixodiphagus hookeri (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) infesting the tick Amblyomma nodosum (Acari: Ixodidae).

Ticks (Ixodida) are ecologically important ectoparasites that may impact human health and economic activities. Parasitoid wasps are natural enemies of ticks and a potential option for its biological control. In the present study, we recorded parasitism of the nymphs of the tick Amblyomma nodosum by the parasitoid wasp Ixodiphagus hookeri. The ticks, in turn, were parasitizing white-bearded manakins, Manacus manacus (Passeriformes: Pipridae) in the União Biological Reserve, one of the last major remnants of lowland rainforest in Rio de Janeiro state, southeastern Brazil. Rickettsial infection in Amblyomma cajennense ticks and capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) in a Brazilian spotted fever-endemic area.

BACKGROUND: Brazilian spotted fever (BSF), caused by the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii, is the deadliest spotted fever of the world. In most of the BSF-endemic areas, capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) are the principal host for the tick Amblyomma cajennense, which is the main vector of BSF. METHODS: In 2012, a BSF case was confirmed in a child that was bitten by ticks in a residential park area inhabited by A. cajennense-infested capybaras in Itú municipality, southeastern Brazil. Host questing A. cajennense adult ticks were collected in the residential park and brought alive to the lab

Amblyomma variegatum in cattle in Marie Galante, French Antilles: prevalence, control measures, and infection by Ehrlichia ruminantium.

We report Marie Galante as one of the Caribbean islands most heavily infested by the tropical bont tick (TBT) Amblyomma variegatum which is associated with two major diseases of ruminants: heartwater and dermatophilosis. In 2005, a survey was undertaken to assess the prevalence of TBT infestation in cattle, the prevalence of Ehrlichia ruminantium infection in TBTs, and the tick control measures implemented by livestock owners. A random sample of 195 cattle herds out of 1885 recorded on the island was investigated by thoroughly counting adult ticks on each animal and filling a questionnaire. A

Ticks, Amblyomma rotundatum (Acari: ixodidae), on toads, Chaunus schneideri and Chaunus granulosus (Anura: bufonidae), in northern Argentina.

This communication provides notes on 2 species of toads, Chaunus schneideri and Chaunus granulosus, infested with ixodid ticks, Amblyomma rotundatum, from the provinces of Corrientes and Formosa in northern Argentina. Chaunus schneideri is a new amphibian host record for A. rotundatum, a species previously reported to parasitize other anurans and also reptiles. We examined 74 ticks on 5 toads. All ticks were A. rotundatum; all adults were females, and all developmental stages were randomly attached to host body parts. Ticks remained attached to one of the toads for from 7 to 17 days after the

Hosts of the exotic ornate kangaroo tick, Amblyomma triguttatum triguttatum Koch, on southern Yorke Peninsula, South Australia.

Amblyomma triguttatum triguttatum is assumed to be endemic to south-western Western Australia (including Barrow Island), Queensland (excluding Cape York Peninsula), and New South Wales, south to Dubbo and Barham. The species has been recorded on a range of mammalian hosts including macropods and domestic animals. In Queensland, A. triguttatum triguttatum is implicated in the epidemiology of Q fever. In 2000, the species was detected on southern Yorke Peninsula in South Australia. We aimed to identify A. triguttatum triguttatum's hosts through trapping, sampling of carcasses, and opportunistic

Comparative infections of epizootic and enzootic strains of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus in Amblyomma cajennense (Acari: Ixodidae).

To compare the potential for an enzootic or an epizootic strain of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) virus to infect Amblyomma cajennense (F.), larval ticks were fed on guinea pigs (strain 13) inoculated with an enzootic viral strain of variant I-E (68U201) or on guinea pigs inoculated with an epizootic strain of variant I-A (Trinidad donkey). Peak viremias were 10(5.2) plaque-forming units (PFU)/ml and 10(7.3) PFU/ml in guinea pigs infected with enzootic and epizootic viral strains, respectively. Ticks feeding on enzootic- and epizootic-infected hosts had viral titers of 10(2.5) and 1

Comparative morphology of the reproductive system and germ cells of Amblyomma ticks (Acari: Ixodidae): A contribution to Ixodidae systematics.

Among arthropods, ticks of the genus Amblyomma are of great medical and veterinary importance and present phylogenetic and taxonomic divergences given polymorphisms and phenotypic plasticity between subpopulations. Generally, the male reproductive system and spermatozoon exhibit diversified morphology and ultrastructure species-specific, bringing new possibilities for phylogenetic and taxonomic issues. Therefore, the present study aimed to describe and compare the morphology of the male reproductive system and its germ cells of Amblyomma aureolatum, A. sculptum, and A. triste, intending to ide

Rickettsia parkeri rickettsiosis in different ecological regions of Argentina and its association with Amblyomma tigrinum as a potential vector.

Rickettsia parkeri, a newly recognized tick-borne pathogen of humans in the Americas, is a confirmed cause of spotted fever group rickettsiosis in Argentina. Until recently, almost all cases of R. parkeri rickettsiosis in Argentina have originated from the Paraná River Delta, where entomological surveys have identified populations of R. parkeri-infected Amblyomma triste ticks. In this report, we describe confirmed cases of R. parkeri rickettsiosis from Córdoba and La Rioja provinces, which are located several hundred kilometers inland, and in a more arid ecological region, where A. triste tick

Effects of a lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum) burden on performance and metabolic indicators in growing beef steers.

We examined the response of selected animal performance, endocrine, immune, and metabolic factors from 13 steers (254+/-6.1 kg) with and without a lone star (Amblyomma americanum) tick burden during progressive days of the tick feeding cycle. Steers were randomly assigned to either non-treated controls or treated with 300 adult pair of A. americanum per animal. Animals were weighed and blood sampled on days -7, 0, 10, 14, 21, 28, and 35 relative to tick treatment. Tick treatment did not affect (P<0.1) animal performance. Experimental day did (P<0.05) affect body weight gain and dry matter inta

Human perception and awareness of ticks in a South Australian rural community and implications for management of Amblyomma triguttatum triguttatum.

The ornate kangaroo tick, Amblyomma triguttatum triguttatum, is invasive on Yorke Peninsula, South Australia. To assess the potential for developing comprehensive management strategies for the species, we mailed 1,000 surveys to Yorke Peninsula residents to investigate community perceptions of ticks, gather information on tick-host ecology, and assess whether or not occupation and length of residence affected whether residents had seen ticks. The response rate was 32%; most respondents (63%) had not seen ticks on Yorke Peninsula. Of those who had (n = 104), 56% had seen ticks on animals, espec

The distribution and ecological 'preferences' of the tick Amblyomma cajennense (Acari: Ixodidae), an ectoparasite of humans and other mammals in the Americas.

The distribution and ecological 'preferences', in the Nearctic and Neotropical regions, of the prominent, pathogen-carrying tick Amblyomma cajennense (Fabricius) were reviewed, on the basis of the published literature, satellite imagery, and the examination of several tick collections. The tick has been collected from the southern U.S.A. (Texas and Florida) to northern Argentina, but is probably absent from Uruguay and southern Brazil (the few records of the species in these areas probably represent mis-identifications). The ecological conditions prevailing in the areas where the tick has been

Evaluation of immunocompetent and immunocompromised mice (Mus musculus) for infection with Ehrlichia chaffeensis and transmission to Amblyomma americanum ticks.

Experiments on the natural history of Ehrlichia chaffeensis, the agent of human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME), would be facilitated by the availability of a laboratory animal model for transmission to vector ticks. Five strains of mice were evaluated for their susceptibility to infection with E. chaffeensis and transmission competence: C57BL/6 mice, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) deficient mice, MHC I deficient (beta2m /) mice, MHC II deficient mice (Abb /), and B and T cell deficient (Rag1 /) mice. The relationship between tick (Amblyomma hebraeum) infestation and immunity to heartwater (Cowdria ruminantium infection) in calves in Zimbabwe.

The occurrence of endemic stability for heartwater (Cowdria ruminantium infection) is a controversial issue, because the means by which young cattle and other neonatal ruminants become infected and acquire immunity to the disease have never been adequately explained. We conducted a study in a heartwater-endemic area in southeastern Zimbabwe to investigate the relationships between calf immunity to C. ruminatium, infestations of the tick vector Amblyomma hebraeum and dam, colostral and calf antibody titres to C. ruminantium.
