The distributions of primary amino acids, MeHg and IHg in body tissues of two commonly farm-raised fish species (common carp: Cyprinus carpio; grass carp: Ctenopharyngodon idellus) in Guizhou Province, SW China, were investigated to understand the effects of primary amino acids on MeHg and IHg metabolism in farm-raised fish. The primary amino acids were classified into four groups: (1) essential and polar amino acids; (2) essential and non-polar amino acids; (3) non-essential and polar amino acids; and (4) non-essential and non-polar amino acids. For both fish species, groups (1, 2 and 3) were

Changes in serum free amino acid level with respect to sex and thyroid function are described. In euthyroid men, the amount of total, glucogenic, essential and nonessential amino acids is significantly higher than in euthyroid women. Patients with thyrotoxicosis exhibited increased levels of all main groups of free amino acids in blood serum. However, the sex-related differences in the main amino acids groups disappeared. The hypothyroidism was also accompanied by the disappearance of the sexual differences between the individual amino acids. The content of essential amino acids declined both

Turtles (Pseudemys scripta elegans) and alligators (Alligator mississipiensis) were fed fish, casein, or free amino acid mixtures, or were injected with free amino acid mixtures, quantities in each case being equivalent to about 42 mmoles of amino acids/kg body weight. The experiments were designed to determine whether protein synthesis normally precedes catabolism of the amino acids absorbed from digesting food. Both animals disposed of free or food-derived amino acids more rapidly than could be accounted for by catabolism alone, but the transient increases in turtle plasma concentrations con

BACKGROUND: Continuous intravenous stable isotope infusion approaches underestimate the anabolic response to a protein meal. Pulse tracer approaches can estimate the intracellular appearance of many amino acids simultaneously. We now combined the pulse tracer approach with intake of a mixture of essential (EAA) or a combination of EAA and non-essential amino acids (TAA) to better estimate the anabolic response.
METHODS: In a randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study, 11 older adults (60-80 years) consumed, on separate study days at least three days apart, three oral drinks

Amino acids are an essential part of parenteral nutrition. This study aimed to determine the serum profile of amino acids and their loss in urine in patients with long-term home parenteral nutrition (HPN) during 12 h of infusion in comparison with similar parameters in the remaining 12 h as well as in healthy participants. We enrolled forty-five patients with long-term HPN for 6-75 (median, 33) months. The indication for HPN was short bowel syndrome secondary to radical resection of the small intestine following complications of Crohn's disease. HPN was administered via two-chamber all-in-one

We have compared levels of albumin and serum amino acids in a group of 87 recent admissions to a nursing home, average age 83 years, with a group of healthy moderately old subjects, average age 69 years. We found that the nursing home group was characterized by decreased levels of albumin, by increased total levels of the measured amino acids, and by increased levels of the nonessential amino acids. In contrast, there were no significant group differences in the essential amino acids. Among the nursing home patients, there was a negative correlation between essential amino acids and disability

Oenococcus oeni has numerous amino acid requirements for growth and dipeptides could be important for its nutrition. In this paper the individual or combined effect of dipeptides on growth of O. oeni X2L in synthetic media deficient in one or more amino acids with L-malic acid was investigated. Utilization of dipeptides, glucose, and L-malic acid was also analyzed. Dipeptides were constituted by at least one essential amino acid for growth. Dipeptides containing two essential amino acids, except leucine, had a more favorable effect than free amino acids on the growth rate. Gly-Gly was consumed

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Inherited metabolic disorders (IMDs) are a group of genetic conditions affecting metabolic pathways. The treatment of some IMDs requires the dietary restriction of specific amino acids. IMDs may also necessitate the supplementation of one or more amino acids due to factors such as reduced dietary intake, impaired synthesis, defective transport or absorption, or increased utilization. This literature review aims to evaluate the most recent evidence regarding amino acid supplementation in IMDs, considering not only the prevention of amino acid deficiency and toxic accumula

This study was conducted to investigate the hepatic extraction of plasma free amino acids in anesthetized Single Comb White Leghorn (SCWL) males (Gallus domesticus). SCWL males were anesthetized and implanted with cannulae in the carotid artery, hepatic vein, hepatic portal vein and the left hepatic duct. Free amino acids in plasma and bile were determined before, during and after 30-min infusions of Saline (control), DL-Methionine (DL-Met) or DL-2-hydroxy-4-methylthio-butanoic acid (DL-HMB) into the hepatic portal vein. Hepatic extraction rates (HER) of amino acids were calculated based on th

Idiopathic osteoporosis in middle-aged men is characterized by low-level bone formation. Inhibited anabolism may be involved in the pathogenesis of the disease and amino acids may be of importance. In the present study fasting amino acid profiles in plasma and erythrocytes were determined in 22 male idiopathic osteoporosis (MIO) patients and in 20 age-matched healthy men and associated with bone mineral density, bone histomorphometry and hormones. The osteoporotic patients had normal plasma essential amino acids but increased non-essential amino acids (p=0.001), particularly glutamine and glyc

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis, also known as Von Recklinghausen disease, is a systemic and progressive genetic disease that primarily affects the skin, eyes, nervous system, and bones. The disease can occur in a variety of ways and can vary in individuals. Metabolomic-based research using blood samples has enabled new diagnostic methods to be used in the diagnosis of various diseases, especially cancer. Among the metabolites, profiling of plasma free amino acids (PFAA) is a promising approach because PFAAs bind all organ systems and play an important role in the metabolism.

Neonates with sickle cell disease (SCD) are of normal size at birth in terms of height and weight. However, by the sixth month of life their growth begins to lag significantly behind that of non-sicklers. We hypothesize that such growth retardation could be explained, at least in part, by the increased excretion of free amino acids in the urine of children with SCD. It is well established that in SCD there are abnormalities in the proximal tubules where amino acids are reabsorbed. We collected serum and urine samples from 13 patients with SCD (age range, 10 months to 14 years), and 17 age-and

The search for new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for myasthenia gravis (MG) is highly desirable. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to assess the profile of non-essential amino acids in the serum of MG patients. We evaluated the serum levels of non-essential amino acids in MG patients (n = 10) and control subjects (CS, n = 10) using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method and assuming a two-fold concentration difference between the groups as significant. Serum levels of aspartic acid and glutamic acid in MG patients were significantly higher than in CS. There were

There is increasing interest in using insects as an alternative nutrient source and Mysore thorn borer (MTB) (Anoplophora chinensis) might have nutritional and functional relevance for humans. The nutritional composition of MTB (amino acids, fatty acids, and elements profiles) was examined and compared with mealworm larva (MWL) (Tenebrio molitor). MTB was found to contain 19 amino acids, including all essential amino acids. A total of 16 fatty acids were detected including polyunsaturated fatty acids (e.g. α-linolenic acid and linoleic acid). Moreover, MTB had a low n - 6/n - 3 ratio and conta

Anautogenous mosquitoes depend on vertebrate blood as nutrient source for their eggs. A highly efficient set of membrane transporters mediates the massive movement of nutrient amino acids between mosquito tissues after a blood meal. Here we report the characterization of the amino-acid transporter Slimfast (Slif) from the yellow-fever mosquito Aedes aegypti using codon-optimized heterologous expression. Slif is a well-known component of the target-of-rapamycin signalling pathway and fat body nutrient sensor, but its substrate specificity and transport mechanism were unknown. We found that Slif

Amino acids derived from protein digestion are important nutrients for the growth and maintenance of organisms. Approximately half of the 20 proteinogenic amino acids can be synthesized by mammalian organisms, while the other half are essential and must be acquired from the nutrition. Absorption of amino acids is mediated by a set of amino acid transporters together with transport of di- and tripeptides. They provide amino acids for systemic needs and for enterocyte metabolism. Absorption is largely complete at the end of the small intestine. The large intestine mediates the uptake of amino ac

R.B.C.'s amino acid pattern was investigated in control and PEM subjects. The effect of oral dosing with cysteine, tryptophan and lysine on total amino acid nitrogen level of R.B.C.s was also studied. Results revealed that in moderate and severe kwashiorkor the total essential and non-essential R.B.C.'s amino acids were decreased. In 2nd grade marasmus the total R.B.C.'s amino acids in general showed lower values than normal. After oral administration of the tested amino acids, the transport index calculated as the level of maximum value of the total R.B.C.'s amino acids reached to the fasting

The gut bacteria can provide nutrition for the host, and regulate host physiological functions and host behavior. In this study, we specifically examined the important roles of free amino acids in the gut microbiota-host interaction. Bumblebees were treated with different concentrations of antibiotics (ampicillin combined with low/high concentrations of tetracycline). Then the effect of antibiotic treatments on the host body weight, gut microbiota, and the free amino acid profiles in the hindgut, hemolymph and brain of bees was evaluated. The results showed that antibiotic treatments resulted
