A 3 month old male child was brought to the hospital with complaints of skin rashes, developmental delay, seizures, seborrheic dermatitis, alopecia and mild, acidosis. The child was subjected to a simple metabolic screening protocol. The result of the screening and the clinical symptoms provided an index pointing towards biotinidase deficiency., a rare autosomal recessive, inherited metabolic disorder. A new polarographic method is described for the determination of nitrite/nitrogen oxides. The nitrite is first diazotized with p-aminobenzoic acid, followed by coupling to 8-hydroxyquinoline to produce an azo dye. This azo dye is adsorbable on a mercury drop electrode and its reduction is reversible. The linear response range is 6 x 10(-9)-3 x 10(-7) g/ml. The detection limit is 4 x 10(-9) g/ml. This method has been applied to the determination of nitrogen oxides in the air.

In a group of 100 patients with ulcus cruris, the incidence of contact allergies was determined. Patch tests were applied with 18 products that might have come into contact with the skin. These products comprised drugs and excipients (preservatives and ointment vehicles) potential ingredients of tapes or of elastic bandages. Peru balsam (14%), wool-wax alcohols (10%), Nestosyl owing to its para-aminobenzoate component (7%), neomycin (5%) and Thyme oil (5%) were the allergens most frequently encountered.

A photosensitivity reaction to vinblastine sulfate occurred in a patient receiving chemotherapy for Hodgkin disease. Ultraviolet light (UVL) testing revealed a decreased minimal erythema dose (MED), which returned to normal following discontinuation of the drug. Photoreactions to intradermal injections of vinblastine were produced in the patient and in five normal controls with a suberythema dose of UVL. Rapid and on-site monitoring of carbaryl residues in complex matrix is important for ensuring environmental and food safety, but it also presents significant challenges. Contact hypersensitivity (CHS) in mice can be induced by cutaneous sensitization followed by elicitation via ear-painting with trinitrochlorobenzene (TNCB). Four patients with Xeroderma pigmentosum are reported: 2 diagnosed following the development of multiple cutaneous tumours, and 2 at an earlier state. The repair synthesis of DNA after ultraviolet radiation was reduced in 3 and normal in 1 patients. Para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) was used topically as sunscreen; for those intolerant to PABA, alternatives are given. 5-fluoro-uracil had satisfactory effect against actinic keratoses. Two patients had associated neurologic and mental abnormalities compatible with deSanctis-Cacchione syndrome, a Xeroderma pigmentosum variant.

Para-aminobenzoic acid and certain of its esters are widely used in sunscreens. We found that one of these, amyl paradimethylaminobenzoate (padimate A) was capable of provoking phototoxic reactions; With ultraviolet A (UV-A) dosages of about 30 joules/sq cm, a reaction grossly resembling sunburn developed in most subjects. A case of methemoglobinemia secondary to topical local anesthetic agents is reported. A 28-year-old, 80-kg white man was admitted to a hospital for respiratory distress two days after an accident. Exocrine pancreatic function was determined by oral administration of N-benzoyl-L-tyrosyl-p-aminobenzoic acid (peptic-PABA-test) in 120 controls, 74 patients with chronic pancreatitis, 35 patients with acute pancreatitis 2--6 weeks after recovery, 201 patients with a variety of gastro-intestinal diseases and in 10 patients with anorexia nervosa. Exposure to visible light of growth medium containing riboflavin and indole at low concentrations created photoproducts highly toxic to Salmonella typhimurium and other bacteria.
