Pronephric duct extension in amphibian embryos: migration and other mechanisms.

Initiation of excretory system development in all vertebrates requires (1) delamination of the pronephric and pronephric duct rudiments from intermediate mesoderm at the ventral border of anterior somites, and (2) extension of the pronephric duct to the cloaca. Pronephric duct extension is the central event in nephric system development; the pronephric duct differentiates into the tubule that carries nephric filtrate out of the body and induces terminal differentiation of adult kidneys. Early studies concluded that pronephric ducts formed by means of in situ segregation of pronephric duct tiss

Forest mediated light regime linked to amphibian distribution and performance.

The vegetation in and around the basins of ephemeral wetlands can greatly affect light environments for aquatic species such as amphibians. We used hemispherical photographs to quantify the light environment in terms of the global site factor (GSF), the proportion of available solar radiation that actually strikes the wetland. We compared GSF to the distribution and performance of two amphibian species (Pseudacris crucifer and Rana sylvatica) within 17 ephemeral wetlands in northeastern Connecticut, USA. We found that P. crucifer is restricted to lighter wetlands (GSF >0.34) and that its abund

Ryanodine and theophylline-induced depletion of energy stores in amphibian muscle.

The effects of high and low levels of ryanodine on theophylline-induced energy depletion were studied in isolated frog sartorius muscle. Whereas low concentrations of ryanodine (1-10 microM) did not change high energy phosphate contents (PE) after 60 min, high levels (100 microM) reduced resting energy contents by 60% after 60 min. Subcontracture levels of theophylline (2 mM), in the presence of high ryanodine, produced an 80% PE depletion, suggesting possible additive or synergistic effects of these two agents. In contrast to theophylline-induced depletion, neither the ryanodine-induced deple

A quantitative comparison of osteoclasts in the teeth of the anuran amphibian Xenopus laevis.

An image-analysing computer was used to measure transectional areas of osteoclast cytoplasm and nuclei, the number of nuclei per osteoclast transection, odontoblast height and dentine thickness on serial sections of resorbing, erupting and ankylosed teeth from 3 groups of female frogs of different snout-vent lengths. All parameters except nuclear size were increased significantly between the small and large frogs, suggesting that larger teeth are resorbed by larger osteoclasts. Because more time is required for resorption of the thicker dentine of large frogs, the increased size and nuclear nu

Inhibitory action of DIDS on chloride transport across the amphibian cornea.

1. DIDS (4,4'-diisothiocyano-2,2'-stilbene disulphonic acid) reduced the CI Isc across the toad's (Bufo marinus) cornea. It acted on either the aqueous or tear side and these effects were additive. 2. The reduction in the Isc was equivalent to the decline in the undirectional flux of Cl from the aqueous to the tear side. The Cl flux from tear to aqueous was not changed. 3. DIDS did not change transmural Na transport. 4. The action of the diuretic bumetanide, which also inhibits Cl transport was additive to that of DIDS when both compounds were present on the aqueous though not when they were o

MARCKS-Like Protein Immunolocalization in Healing Appendages of Amphibians Suggests Its Involvement in Regeneration.

The present study reveals the immunolocalization of the MARCKS-like protein in two urodeles and an anuran during the initial stages of appendage regeneration. This acidic protein of 22-32 kDa interacts with the dynamic cytoskeleton of activated keratinocytes and blastema cells and is believed to be among the initial signaling factors stimulating limb regeneration in the axolotl. Bioinformatics controls indicate presence of homologous MARCKS-like proteins also in other amphibian species. The present study aims to generalize the presence of this protein during the first 2-8 days of appendage reg

Colour Confusion: Reviewing Ambiguities in the Identification and Classification of Chromatophore Deficiencies Among Amphibians.

The colour of amphibian skin and eyes (retina and iris) is the result of light interacting with cells called chromatophores, primarily xanthophores, iridophores and melanophores, that can be found in various combinations. Thus, identifying the chromatophores involved in colour abnormalities in this group is challenging, particularly if it is solely based on a visual comparison of atypical versus typical individuals, as light may be interacting with several types of chromatophores at once. As most records of colour aberrations will likely continue to be based on visual assessments without the p

Recurrent evolution of adhesive defence systems in amphibians by parallel shifts in gene expression.

Natural selection can drive organisms to strikingly similar adaptive solutions, but the underlying molecular mechanisms often remain unknown. Several amphibians have independently evolved highly adhesive skin secretions (glues) that support a highly effective antipredator defence mechanism. Here we demonstrate that the glue of the Madagascan tomato frog, Dyscophus guineti, relies on two interacting proteins: a highly derived member of a widespread glycoprotein family and a galectin. Identification of homologous proteins in other amphibians reveals that these proteins attained a function in ski

Comparative Toxicity of Aquatic Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance Exposure in Three Species of Amphibians.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are contaminants of concern due to their widespread occurrence in the environment, persistence, and potential to elicit a range of negative health effects. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are regularly detected in surface waters, but their effects on many aquatic organisms are still poorly understood. Species with thyroid-dependent development, like amphibians, can be especially susceptible to PFAS effects on thyroid hormone regulation. We examined sublethal effects of aquatic exposure to four commonly detected PFAS on larval northern leopard frog

Host defense or parasite cue: Skin secretions mediate interactions between amphibians and their parasites.

Amphibian skin secretions (substances produced by the amphibian plus microbiota) plausibly act as a first line of defense against parasite/pathogen attack, but may also provide chemical cues for pathogens. To clarify the role of skin secretions in host-parasite interactions, we conducted experiments using cane toads (Rhinella marina) and their lungworms (Rhabdias pseudosphaerocephala) from the range-core and invasion-front of the introduced anurans' range in Australia. Depending on the geographical area, toad skin secretions can reduce the longevity and infection success of parasite larvae, or

Parasite transmission in complex communities: predators and alternative hosts alter pathogenic infections in amphibians.

While often studied in isolation, host-parasite interactions are typically embedded within complex communities. Other community members, including predators and alternative hosts, can therefore alter parasite transmission (e.g., the dilution effect), yet few studies have experimentally evaluated more than one such mechanism. Here, we used data from natural wetlands to design experiments investigating how alternative hosts and predators of parasites mediate trematode (Ribeiroia ondatrae) infection in a focal amphibian host (Pseudacris regilla). In short-term predation bioassays involving mollus

Amphibian Strategies Against Attacks by Flies: Host-Specificity and Threats.

Species interactions are fundamental to ecological and evolutionary processes, shaping ecosystem dynamics and driving biodiversity. Among those, interactions between flies and amphibians are common in tropical areas, yet most aspects of their ecology and evolution are understudied. Using the PRISMA method, we systematically review the literature to examine the direct and indirect threats imposed by Diptera flies attacking amphibians and the behavioral, physiological, and acoustic defenses they elicit. We delve, for instance, into the eavesdropping behavior of some dipteran species, which use a

Characterization of the glycoproteins of fish and amphibian influenza B-like viruses.

Influenza-like virus sequences previously identified in fish and amphibians cluster as a sister clade of influenza B viruses but remain largely uncharacterized. We demonstrate that salamander influenza-like virus (SILV) hemagglutinin (HA) is functionally divergent from influenza B virus HA and does not bind to α2,3- and α2,6-linked sialic acids. However, the HAs of Siamese algae-eater influenza-like virus (SAEILV) and chum salmon influenza-like virus (CSILV) bind to α2,3-linked sialic acid. Furthermore, SAEILV HA binds to sialyated Lewis X, is activated by human airway enzymes, and is fusogeni

The antibacterial activity and therapeutic potential of the amphibian-derived peptide TB_KKG6K.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have great potential to be developed as topical treatments for microbial infections of the skin, including those caused by the gram-positive human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus. Among the AMPs, temporin B (TB) is of particular interest. This 13-amino-acid-long cationic peptide is secreted by the granular glands of the European frog Rana temporaria and represents a primary line of defense against invading pathogens. The objective of this study was to investigate the antibacterial efficacy and the mode of action of the synthetic TB analog, TB_KKG6K, in a drug-resis

Detection of Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (Ichthyophthiriidae) in two wild amphibian species.

Emerging infectious diseases are one of the main threats to global amphibian populations. Frogs and salamanders are already affected by various pathogens, including ranaviruses, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, B. salamandrivorans, and helminths. Here, we report the first confirmed cases of Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, a ciliate parasite traditionally considered fish-specific, infecting wild amphibian larvae in a natural setting. As part of a passive surveillance program in Catalonia, five dead amphibians (four S. salamandra larvae and one Rana temporaria post-metamorph) were collected from a

Subcutaneous occurrence of encysted Acanthocephala in an anuran amphibian from Brazil.

Acanthocephalans, in their adult stage, are obligatory parasites of many types of vertebrates, including anuran amphibians. Their complex life cycle always involves an arthropod intermediate host but may include non-obligatory strategies that could improve transmission success, such as paratenic infections. In paratenic hosts, these parasites are normally found loose in the body cavity or encysted in internal organs. Here, we present the first report of acanthocephalans found encysted under the skin of an amphibian (i.e., external to its body cavity). The specimen, a clay robber frog [Haddadus

Niche partitioning and the storage effect facilitate coexistence in an amphibian community.

Virtually all natural community assemblages are dominated by a handful of common species. Dominant species can exert negative impacts on biodiversity through competitive exclusion, and thus there is a strong incentive to understand imbalances in community composition, changes in dominance hierarchies through time, and mechanisms of coexistence. Pond-breeding amphibians that utilize ephemeral wetlands provide an excellent opportunity to evaluate theoretical predictions of community composition in stochastic environments. One of the most striking features of pond-breeding amphibians is the marke

Amphibian fungal panzootic causes catastrophic and ongoing loss of biodiversity.

Anthropogenic trade and development have broken down dispersal barriers, facilitating the spread of diseases that threaten Earth's biodiversity. We present a global, quantitative assessment of the amphibian chytridiomycosis panzootic, one of the most impactful examples of disease spread, and demonstrate its role in the decline of at least 501 amphibian species over the past half-century, including 90 presumed extinctions. The effects of chytridiomycosis have been greatest in large-bodied, range-restricted anurans in wet climates in the Americas and Australia. Declines peaked in the 1980s, and

Exposure to a cyanobacterial toxin increases larval amphibian susceptibility to parasitism.

Anthropogenic activities are promoting the proliferation of aquatic primary producers in freshwater habitats, including cyanobacteria. Among various problems stemming from eutrophication, cyanobacterial blooms can be toxic due to the production of secondary compounds, including microcystins such as microcystin-LR (MC-LR); however, it is unknown whether cyanotoxins can affect the susceptibility of aquatic vertebrates such as fish and larval amphibians to parasites or pathogens even though infectious diseases can significantly affect natural populations. Here, we examined how exposure to environ
