Dermatosis contributing factors in bilateral lower limb war-amputees.

This study conducted to assess the factors related to skin lesions in bilateral lower limb war-amputees. This is a clinical based, cross-sectional study of 335 bilateral amputees who injured during Iran-Iraq War. Their demographics and injuries detail, amputation, prosthesis and gait-aid characteristics, stump hygiene and skin problems, have been investigated. Through logistic regression analysis, the three factors of the shape of the stumps, the length of the stumps and excessive perspiration were recognized to have an independent association in skin lesions development, among the population

Rehabilitation considerations of prosthetic fittings for Kaposi's sarcoma amputees.

PURPOSE: We report on cutaneous limb manifestations of Kaposi's sarcoma and the secondary infection of these lesions that necessitated five lower-limb amputations. METHOD: The cases are briefly described and prosthetic adaptations in respect to pressure, traction and sweating on the skin are considered. RESULTS: All four patients ambulated initially; one lady died, the double amputee stopped walking owing to the excessive physical demand, and two patients ambulate freely. CONCLUSION: Special considerations to the cutaneous/prosthesis interface are necessary in order to provide these patient

A clinical evaluation of stumps in lower limb amputees.

A study was carried out on 93 consecutive unilateral below-knee (BK) and 62 above-knee (AK) amputees. The dimensions of the amputation stumps were measured and the general condition and contralateral limb assessed at the time of prosthetic fitting. After one postoperative year, follow-up information for 124 (89%) of the surviving patients was obtained by personal contact. The observations were based on the standard formula for stump classification constructed by the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics. The 93 BK stumps had a mean length of 16.0 cm and the 62 AK stumps a mean le

The preformed socket and modular assembly for primary amputees.

A method is described by which an artificial limb can be fitted as soon as an above-knee or below-knee amputation wound is healed, by using preformed sockets which enable the prosthetist to fit the limb within the hour. The method has been found safe, and better than other methods previously described to facilitate the early mobilisation and rehabilitation of the amputee.

Trip Detection Algorithms for Healthy and Amputee Individuals.

Amputation disrupts normal gait biomechanics, reducing strength, balance, and toe clearance. These factors contribute to an increase in falls in amputees, leading to both physical injury and psychological burden. Powered and microprocessor prosthetic legs can potentially react to external perturbations, but fast and reliable perturbation detection algorithms are needed. We developed three different algorithms for trip detection, each based on a different approach: thresholds, machine learning, or anomaly detection. Each trip detection method was validated offline with data acquired from 17 hea

Comprehensive Rehabilitation for a Multilimb Amputee: A Case Report.

Multilimb amputation poses a significant challenge to an individual's mobility, independence, and overall quality of life. Comprehensive rehabilitation is essential for these patients to restore functional abilities and facilitate their reintegration into society. This case study details the rehabilitation of a 23-year-old male who sustained bilateral transradial and right transtibial amputations due to an electric burn injury. Upon presentation, the patient exhibited severe functional limitations, with complete dependence on caregivers for mobility, self-care, and activities of daily living (

Managing Contact Dermatitis Related to Amputee Care.

Amputees who use prosthetic devices are particularly vulnerable to contact dermatitis due to factors such as moisture, friction, and prolonged exposure to prosthetic materials. Distinguishing between allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) can be difficult, as the symptoms often overlap; therefore, careful evaluation of patient history, clinical features, and diagnostic tests is required. Allergic contact dermatitis in amputees frequently is triggered by exposure to materials such as rubber, metal, and adhesives, whereas ICD often is caused by friction and moist

Stifle arthrodesis in a feline pelvic limb amputee.

CASE SUMMARY: A domestic shorthair cat presented to the Animal Referral Hospital (Brisbane, Australia) after having the left pelvic limb incorrectly amputated. The cat was unable to ambulate on the remaining right pelvic limb due to a chronically subluxated stifle. A stifle arthrodesis was performed on the right pelvic limb to manage the injury. Follow-up radiographs performed 5 months postoperatively demonstrated stifle arthrodesis with no detectable complications. The owner reported that aside from some difficulties in toileting, the cat had a good quality of life and was capable of performi

Rehabilitation of a quadruple amputee with leukemia: A challenging endeavor.

Making a person with quadruple amputation walk again is a challenging task for the rehabilitation team. Quadruple amputation secondary to symmetrical peripheral gangrene is a rare clinical scenario posing challenges in rehabilitation. Literature regarding rehabilitation of persons with multiple amputations is limited. This case describes the rehabilitation of a 57-year-old lady suffering from acute myeloid leukaemia who underwent quadruple amputation. She had undergone bilateral transtibial and bilateral transradial amputation after vasopressor-induced symmetrical peripheral gangrene. In view

Referred Sensation Areas in a Bilateral Toes Amputee.

Various mechanisms in generating phantom limb pain (PLP) have been hypothesized in the literature. However, there still is no clear understanding of how PLP develops and why it presents. Amputation leads to permanent anatomical and physiological changes of the neural path previously supplying the brain with sensory input, as well as to formation of referred sensation areas (RSAs) on the stump or its vicinity. Sensations may be evoked in the lost body part upon stimulation of RSAs that may be exploited as artificial sensory input. In this work, we present the analysis of RSA maps from a 45-year

Residual limb claudication in a traumatic transtibial amputee.

Residual limb pain is a common symptom in the lower extremity amputee population with a fairly broad differential diagnosis. One etiology of residual limb pain that has previously received limited discussion in the literature is that of vascular claudication. Increased awareness of this etiology is important given the prevalence of vascular disease in both the general population and in lower extremity amputees. This article discusses a presentation of residual limb vascular claudication, describes a clinical approach to the problem, and discusses a potential pathophysiologic mechanism for vasc

Total knee arthroplasty in a below-knee amputee.

We present the case of a 75-year-old woman who, following a below-knee amputation, developed worsening osteoarthritis of her knee in the same limb. A total knee replacement was subsequently performed in the amputated limb. The patient successfully mobilized following the procedure and remained pain-free on review after 8 months. The Knee Society score improved from 53 to 85, and the function score increased from 0 to 40. Modifications to the standard technique of total knee arthroplasty used in this case and the postoperative rehabilitation methods are described. Total knee replacement should

Rehabilitation of a triple amputee including a hip disarticulation.

A multiple amputee more severe than a triple amputee is uncommon. There have been no reports on the rehabilitation outcome of a triple amputee, including hip disarticulation and transtibial amputation. The authors report the rehabilitation of a patient with left hip disarticulation, right trans-tibial amputation, and left trans-humeral amputation due to a train accident. He has successfully completed the rehabilitation programme and has become independent in prosthetic ambulation, activities of daily living, and driving.

Slow rehabilitation of a traumatic lower limb amputee.

A 65-year-old male (GM) was referred to the physiotherapy department of the regional limb fitting centre for outpatient rehabilitation following a right transfemoral amputation five weeks previously. He had been knocked down by a bus and suffered a crush injury to the right leg resulting in a stable fracture to the right pubic ramus, a fractured skull and orbital bone. Immediately following admission to the local district general hospital, his right leg was amputated at the transfemoral level. He was nursed post-operatively in ITU for three days and was ventilated during this time. GM was then

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy in an amputee: case study.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) has been described primarily in the upper extremity and is infrequently considered part of the differential diagnosis of postamputation pain. The manifestations of autonomic dysfunction may mimic other potential diagnoses of postoperative stump pain. We report a 47-year-old man who developed RSD of the knee during the mobilization phase after below-knee amputation for atherosclerotic peripheral vascular disease. The diagnosis was made by clinical examination, radiography, and scintigraphy without the need for any invasive studies. The characteristic diagnosti

Prescription options for the below knee amputee. A review.

In 1973 a workshop sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences recommended that "efforts to develop prescription criteria for use of the numerous variants of the BK prosthesis should be intensified." This paper provides a review of the important considerations in the prescription of a below-knee prosthesis. It is intended that this information would assist the physician to make better informed decisions regarding the specific type of prosthesis for a particular patient. No attempt has been made to describe all prosthetic options since a majority of amputees are fit with only a few prescripti
