Variations of the trapezius branch of the accessory nerve: an anatomic study.

Although modified radical neck dissections have increased in popularity to reduce morbidity secondary to intraoperative accessory nerve damage, inadvertent injury still often occurs. As this phenomenon is thought to be due to anatomic variation in the trapezius branch of the accessory nerve, it is imperative to better understand the nuances of these anatomic variations to better inform surgical decision-making. A total of 24 accessory nerves were dissected, exposed, and traced in 15 cadavers. Three aspects of the accessory nerve were identified and recorded: the course of the trapezius branch

Study on Anatomical Variations in Fissures of Lung by CT Scan.

Introduction  Refinements in the modern computed tomography (CT) imaging techniques have led to anatomical variations in the fissures of lung being diagnosed more frequently. So far, majority of the studies conducted are cadaveric. There is paucity of studies in this aspect based on chest CT images. Hence, we undertook this study to find the anatomical variations in the fissures. Prior detection of anatomical abnormalities is important to reduce postoperative complications in lung resection surgeries. Materials and Methods  This was a cross-sectional study conducted over a period of 2 years. D

Anomalous Anatomical Variations of Coeliac Trunk: A Cadaveric Study.

Background The celiac trunk, celiac axis or celiac artery is the first major abdominal branch of the aorta. Anatomical variations of the coeliac trunk and along with the other branches of the abdominal aorta result from changes in the ventral segmental arteries supplying the digestive tube during foetal development. Panagouli performed a systemaic review and proposed a new classification describing all celiac trunk variations through a systematic review. Knowledge of the celiac trunk anatomy and any variations is clinically relevant in esophageal, gastroduodenal, hepatic, biliary and pancreati

Silent anatomic variations of the pediatric chest: They might not be congenital.

AIM: We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of silent anatomic variations of the chest wall, to estimate frequency in different age groups, and to answer are these variations more prominent with age? MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thorax CT scans of 592 children were retrospectively reviewed. 82 children who underwent CT for evaluation of the suspected chest wall deformities, chest wall lesions, prominent scoliosis, and who had chest wall surgery, thoracotomy, or trauma causing chest wall or clavicular fracture were excluded from the study. The frequency of silent anatomic variations was evaluated and c

Importance of Space-Occupying Anatomical Variations in Peroneal Tendoscopy.

BACKGROUND: We hypothesized that peroneal tendons disorders are more commonly associated with anatomical variations, which could overcrowd the retrofibular groove. METHODS: This single-center retrospective case study covered 84 consecutive cases that had undergone peroneal tendoscopy. Peroneal tendoscopy was performed on 82 patients, predominantly female (3:1) with a median age of 46 years. The preoperative evaluation and all the procedures were performed by a single surgeon using a standardized technique. RESULTS: Two patients required revision surgery 8 and 52 months after the index proced

Anatomical variations and evolution: re-evaluating their importance for surgeons.

For several decades, anatomists and biological anthropologists have made an intensive study in anatomical variations in ancestral and living humans. While many anatomical variants do not require clinical attention, some may present diagnostic problems or augur adverse symptoms. It is only in the last few decades that a plausible argument has been made that anatomical changes in human individuals and lineages demonstrate ongoing microevolution. Since the mid-19th century, there has been a reduction in differential mortality. Increased variation of heritable traits is a consequential outcome of

Anatomical Variations in Recurrent Laryngeal Nerves in Thyroid Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To study terminal bifurcation of recurrent laryngeal nerves (RLNs) with original direction to larynx entry and to decrease the risk of vocal cord paralysis in thyroid patients. METHODS: The RLNs of 294 patients (482 sides) were dissected according to the branches into the larynx, and the original direction of each RLN trunk in thyroid surgery was recorded. RESULTS: (1) About 30.9% of the RLNs gave off multiple branches into the larynx. (2) Two and 3 branches of RLNs into the larynx were found in 25.5% and 5.4% of the cases, respectively. (3) In 0.4% or 2 cases, the RLN trunk combi

Anatomical variations of the dentate gyrus in normal adult brain.

Recent scientific papers indicate the clinical significance of the dentate gyrus. However, a detailed knowledge of the anatomical variations of this structure in normal adult brain is still lacking. An understanding of the variable morphology of the dentate gyrus may be important for diagnostic neuroimaging. Thus, the purpose of this macroscopic cadaveric study was to describe the anatomical variations of the dentate gyrus. Forty formalin-fixed human cerebral hemispheres, obtained from bodies of donors without the history of neuropathological diseases, were included in the study. The dentate g

Anatomic variations: a rare variant of formation of the portal vein.

The portal vein derives from the vitelline veins, a component of the extraembryonic venous system, and is normally formed by the confluence of the superior mesenteric and splenic vein. The knowledge of the anatomy of the portal vein and its abnormalities is important for interventional and surgical procedures. Variant portal architecture is a common finding during imaging studies. Ultrasonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance are non-invasive methods for studying and understanding portal vein's anatomy and abnormalities. We describe a rare case of variation in the formation and c

Anatomical Variations in the Course of Labial Arteries: A Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Nonsurgical lip enhancement using dermal fillers is a very popular procedure. The trend for enlarged lips has been popularized by media and social media. The lips have considerable aesthetic and functional importance, in addition to having a complex anatomy. Serious complications, including vascular compromise or occlusion leading to cutaneous necrosis and blindness, can occur as the result of lip enhancement using dermal fillers. Therefore, aesthetic practitioners require an in-depth understanding of the anatomy and vasculature of the lips and the perioral area prior to providing

Anatomical variations of the abductor pollicis longus: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The abductor pollicis longus (APL) originates from the lateral part of the dorsal surface of the body of the ulna below the insertion of the anconeus muscle, from the interosseous membrane, and from the middle third of the dorsal surface of the body of the radius. However, the number of its accessory bands and their insertion vary considerably. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty upper limbs (2 paired, 31 male, 19 female) were obtained from adult Caucasian cadavers, and fixed in 10% formalin solution before examination. RESULTS: The APL muscle was present in all specimens. The muscles w

A novel classification of the anatomical variations of the first extensor compartment.

The presence of a septum in the first extensor compartment is closely associated with the pathophysiology of de Quervain disease, and affects the efficacy of corticosteroid injection and surgical release. This study aimed to examine the incidence and length of the first extensor compartment septum.Forty sides of the wrists in 20 cadavers were used. The presence of a septum in the first extensor compartment was examined. The septum length was recorded with the radial styloid process as the reference point. The anatomical variations of the first extensor compartment were classified into 3 types.

Anatomical variations of the arterial supply to the adrenal gland in the rat.

The adrenal gland is an essential endocrine organ for the stress response. The functions of this organ may be studied by ligation of the adrenal artery or adrenalectomy. However, in prior studies, descriptions of the anatomical variations of the adrenal artery were insufficient and inconsistent. Therefore, anatomical variations of the arterial supply to the adrenal gland were studied in 18 male and 18 female Wistar rats by colored latex injection into the arteries. The vascularization pattern was categorized into 4 types based on the origin of each adrenal artery. The cranial and middle adrena

Lumbar sympathetic chain: anatomical variation and clinical perspectives.

The sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems constitute the autonomic nervous system which controls the entropy of the body and maintain the equilibrium. The sympathetic chain forms a definitive anatomic entity which is quite variable with respect to its position and the number of ganglia. The sympathetic nervous system causes vasoconstriction and thus forms the basis of Lumbar sympathetic surgeries being performed in patients with peripheral vascular diseases. The anatomic variations in this region hence gains immense importance for the operating surgeons and consulting radiologists. I

Anatomic Variations in Pituitary Endocrinopathies: Implications for the Surgical Corridor.

Objectives/Hypotheses Functioning pituitary adenomas may produce endocrinopathies such as acromegaly and Cushing syndrome. Both conditions lead to characteristic anatomic variations as a result of hormonally induced abnormal soft tissue deposition. We evaluate the anatomic differences between acromegalics and Cushing disease patients and compare these dimensions to controls. Design Radiographic review of preoperative magnetic resonance images (MRI) of the pituitary gland. Setting Tertiary academic medical center. Participants Patients who underwent transnasal, transsphenoidal surgery for pitui

Rare anatomical variation of the musculocutaneous nerve - case report.

The clinical and surgical importance of anatomical knowledge of the musculocutaneous nerve and its variations is due to the fact that one of the complications in many upper-limb surgical procedures involves injury to this nerve. During routine dissection of the right upper limb of a male cadaver, we observed an anatomical variation of this nerve. The musculocutaneous nerve originated in the lateral cord and continued laterally, passing under the coracobrachialis muscle and then continuing until its first branch to the biceps brachialis muscle. Just after this, it supplied another two branches,
