[Clinico-anatomic correlations in active forms of tuberculosis].

Basing on 1957 autopsies of the patients with active forms of TB that has been incorrectly diagnosed either intravitally, or postmortEM, the authors distinguish 5 forms of discrepancy between the pathoanatomical and clinical diagnoses. Thus, spread progressive TB was primarily diagnosed postmortem in 12.3%; the discrepancy of the diagnoses in form, stage, specific TB complications was found in 46.5%; "pseudo-diagnosis" of TB was made in 1.7%; the difference in the diagnoses concerning the associated diseases was noted in 26.6%; no information on TB in the pathoanatomical diagnosis when death o

Gross and radiographic appearance of porotic hyperostosis and cribra orbitalia in thalassemia affected skulls.

Porotic hyperostosis (PH) is the expansion of the cranial diploë, generating 'hair-on-end' appearance on X-rays. This condition is extremely rare and had a prevalence of 0.08%. It is alternatively known as cribra orbitalia (CO) when the orbital roof is affected. In this study, we describe the gross morphology of two skulls affected by PH and CO. The first skull belonged to a 41-year-old female previously diagnosed with beta thalassemia. The skull was affected by excessive PH and CO. The second skull, belonging to a 35-year-old male diagnosed with unspecified thalassemia, showed PH without CO.

Superficial Ulnar Artery: A Case Report of its Unusual Course.

After arising from the brachial artery in the cubital fossa the ulnar artery usually passes deep into the superficial flexor muscles of the forearm. In the lower two-thirds, it typically follows a sub-fascial course. In the present case, during a routine undergraduate course dissection of a cadaver, it was found that the ulnar artery arose normally as a terminal branch of the brachial artery in the cubital fossa, followed a sub-fascial course by lying superficial to the flexor muscles then completed the superficial palmar arch in hand. This artery gave only minute muscular branches in the fore

Anomalous large unique muscle belly of flexor digitorum superficialis and the absence of palmaris longus in the forearm.

Anomalies of muscles of the upper extremity are frequently encountered and anatomic variations of the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) muscle-tendon unit are frequently reported by anatomists and clinicians. FDS anomalies can be in forms of tendon interconnections, substitution, absence or muscle belly variations and most of the times the anomalies of FDS produce few clinical symptoms. We report a rare and unusual case of FDS anomaly with a unique and large muscle belly. The deformity is type V according to the classification of Elliot et al. in which the muscle belly extends to four digit

Sinus node artery originating from the posterior part of the right coronary artery.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to examine the anatomical variations of the sinus node artery (SNA). METHODS: Gross anatomical examination, angiographic evaluation and if necessary dissection were performed in 200 human hearts derived from victims of various accidents. RESULTS: The SNA was a branch of the right coronary artery in 118 [59%] cases, the left circumflex in 78 [39%] cases and both coronary arteries in 4 [2%] cases. In one subject, the SNA was found to arise from the distal part of the right coronary artery. CONCLUSIONS: In our case, the sinus node was perfused by a SNA ari

Cerebral localization in antiquity.

Fragments of neurology can be found in the oldest medical writings in antiquity. Recognizable cerebral localization is seen in Egyptian medical papyri. Most notably, the Edwin Smith papyrus describes hemiplegia after a head injury. Similar echoes can be seen in Homer, the Bible, and the pre-Hippocratic writer Alcmaeon of Croton. While Biblical writers thought that the heart was the seat of the soul, Hippocratic writers located it in the head. Alexandrian anatomists described the nerves, and Galen developed the ventricular theory of cognition whereby mental functions are classified and localize

Three D Modeling of the human face. The method combines the use of DICOM CT scan or cone beam data, anatomical informations and a mathematical tool, the axes of inertia, in order to create a 3D model for cephalometric analysis of the human face. The balance and symmetry of the model are stable enough to define normality for each individual, even when there are differences in ethnic and cultural origins. Imbalance and asymmetry characterize pathologies. Follow up shape and size of models allow growth prediction and modeling. An original statistical study of the 3D model variability using the "g

The Enigmatic temporal pole: a review of findings on social and emotional processing.

The function of the anterior-most portion of the temporal lobes, the temporal pole, is not well understood. Anatomists have long considered it part of an extended limbic system based on its location posterior to the orbital frontal cortex and lateral to the amygdala, along with its tight connectivity to limbic and paralimbic regions. Here we review the literature in both non-human primates and humans to assess the temporal pole's putative role in social and emotional processing. Reviewed findings indicate that it has some role in both social and emotional processes, including face recognition

Sphincter of Oddi Function and Risk Factors for Dysfunction.

The sphincter of Oddi (SO) is a smooth muscle valve regulating the flow of biliary and pancreatic secretions into the duodenum, initially described in 1887 by the Italian anatomist, Ruggero Oddi. SO dysfunction (SOD) is a broad term referring to numerous biliary, pancreatic, and hepatic disorders resulting from spasms, strictures, and relaxation of this valve at inappropriate times. This review brings attention to various factors that may increase the risk of SOD, including but not limited to: cholecystectomy, opiates, and alcohol. Lack of proper recognition and treatment of SOD may be associa

[Transverse abdominal plane - anatomical and clinical aspects].

In medicine spectacular progress can be observed at many stages, which sometimes requires the redefinition of already known anatomical structures. One of them is the transverse abdominal plane, which was the focus of anaesthetists. It was observed that anaesthetics introduced locally into this plane have similar power to a traditional epidural procedure or spinal anaesthesia. The concept of the trans- verse abdominal plane is a relatively new anatomical term which was introduced into clinical medicine by anaesthetists. Because of the potential performance of anaesthetic pro- cedures through ac

Parathyroid cyst: the forgotten diagnosis of a neck mass.

The differential diagnosis of cystic cervical masses includes cystic thyroid disease or some embryological diseases. Parathyroid cyst is one of the less common causes of the cervical masses. The Swedish anatomist Sandstrom reported the first description of parathyroid cyst in 1880. Up to date, only about 300 cases have been reported in the world literature. They may be functional or nonfunctional, depending on the presence or absence of the hyperparathyroidism and treatment options vary for both presentations. Particularly, nonfunctional cysts are often considered as thyroid cysts. Diagnosis i

De Graaf's thread: the human epididymis.

The epididymis consists of a single, highly coiled and convoluted tubule that Antoine De Graaf, the famous 17th-century anatomist, likened to a thread thickening to a string. The uncoiled tubule is several meters long and sperm in transit through it become functionally mature under the under the influence of the tubule lumen's microenvironment. The regulation of that microenvironment and the manner by which it influences sperm maturation have been the topic of investigation for many years, though the study of the human epididymis directly is fraught with problems related to sample availability

Johann Georg Wirsüng (1589-1643) and the pancreatic duct: the prosector of Padua, Italy.

Although his primacy was subsequently challenged by a student, it is now known that Johann Georg Wirsüng, the prosector of Padua, Italy, discovered the human pancreatic duct in 1642 during the dissection of an executed murderer. Instead of publishing his discovery, he engraved a drawing of the duct on a copper plate, from which he made seven or more imprints. The copies were sent to leading anatomists of Europe with the question, "Should I call it an artery or a vein? I never found blood in it ...." Three and a half centuries later, the copper plate remains well preserved and the authors, to t

Evolution of intra-operative parathyroid hormone and its application in parathyroid surgery.

The history and evolution of parathyroid hormone is a true testament to inter-disciplinary collaboration among anatomists, biochemists and surgeons. The parathyroid glands were the last endocrine glands to be discovered in the mid-1800s. Over the next century, progress in the evaluation of primary hyperparathyroidism, the identification of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and its application for use in the field of parathyroid surgery have led to a significant improvement in surgical cure rates, accompanied by a shift toward minimally invasive surgical options. This chapter provides a historical lens

The clinical anatomy of crucifixion.

Crucifixion was a widely used form of execution for capital crimes in antiquity. Civilizations and empires perfected the technique, leading to centuries of discussions, controversies, and questions, many of which concerned the death of Jesus Christ. To this day, much remains to be discovered in both religious and scientific realms. However, the aim of this study is to discuss such facts as are known from the medical perspectives of clinical anatomists. Nails/spikes were driven through the hands/wrists and feet of five adult cadavers, and the cadavers were then dissected to observe the anatomic

A unique variation with five branches of the aortic arch.

Here, we present a unique case with 5 branches of the aortic arch (AA), namely the right common carotid artery, left common carotid artery, left thyrocervical trunk, left subclavian artery and right subclavian artery (RSA), from right to left. We found that the left thyrocervical trunk originated directly from the AA rather than the left subclavian artery. In addition, the RSA arose dorsally as the last branch of the AA and passed posteriorly to the oesophagus to supply the right upper limb. In addition, the right vertebral artery originated from the right common carotid artery instead of the

Three concurrent variations of the aberrant right subclavian artery, the non-recurrent laryngeal nerve and the right thoracic duct.

We herein report a case showing three anatomical variations including the aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA), the non-recurrent laryngeal nerve (NRLN) and the right thoracic duct in a 59-year-old male cadaver. The right subclavian artery (RSA) arose from the descending aorta next to the left subclavian artery and coursed in between the oesophagus and the thoracic vertebrae. The recurrent laryngeal nerve did not coil around the RSA but directly entered the larynx. Lastly the thoracic duct terminated into the right brachiocephalic vein. This study makes an embryological assumption that the

Rare kissing antra of the maxillary sinuses: clinical implications.

PURPOSE: To report a rare anatomical variant of the maxillary sinuses, with radiological and clinical emphasis. METHODS: A 40-year-old male with recurrent acute rhinosinusitis presented to our center for clinical management. A computed tomography scan revealed the presence of an incidental anatomical variant of bilateral maxillary sinuses for which we coin the term "kissing antra". RESULTS: Kissing antra appearances on computed tomography consisted of enlarged bilateral palatine recesses of the maxillary antra that met in the midline across a narrow bony septum below the floor of the nasal c

The brainstem and its neurosurgical history.

Brainstem is one of the most complex structures of the human body, and has the most complex intracranial anatomy, which makes surgery at this level the most difficult. Due to its hidden position, the brainstem became known later by anatomists, and moreover, brainstem surgery cannot be understood without knowing the evolution of ideas in neuroanatomy, neuropathology, and neuroscience. Starting from the first attempts at identifying brainstem anatomy in prehistory and antiquity, the history of brainstem discoveries and approach may be divided into four periods: macroscopic anatomy, microscopic a

Academic nightmares: Predatory publishing.

Academic researchers who seek to publish their work are confronted daily with a barrage of e-mails from aggressive marketing campaigns that solicit them to publish their research with a specialized, often newly launched, journal. Known as predatory journals, they often promise high editorial and publishing standards, yet their exploitive business models, poor quality control, and minimal overall transparency victimize those researchers with limited academic experience and pave the way for low-quality articles that threaten the foundation of evidence-based research. Understanding how to identif
