Ultrasound imaging of regenerating rat sciatic nerves in situ.

Following clinical or veterinary peripheral nerve trauma, it is critical to localize the site of nerve injury, determine its type, whether a crush, maceration or transection, which will indicate whether and where surgical intervention is required, and subsequently to follow the process of axon regeneration. Typical surface ultrasound probes provide resolution of more than 1mm, sufficient detail for clinically relevant data from tissue in situ, such as heart valves, organs and fetal development. Higher resolution ultrasound nerve imaging yields data to the fascicular level and allows the follow

Ultrasonographic Anatomy of Selected Abdominal Organs in the Greater Cane Rat (Thryonomys swinderianus).

BACKGROUND: The greater cane rat (Thryonomys swinderianus) is one of the largest rodents in Africa. It is domesticated in the sub-Saharan Africa as a result of increased bushmeat demand and being used in traditional medicine and biomedical research. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to describe the normal ultrasonographic appearance and provide reference values for selected abdominal organs in greater cane rats. METHODS: Abdominal ultrasonography was performed on 10 adult greater cane rats under general anaesthesia. Ultrasonographic appearance was described, and measurements were taken. R

Morphological and Imaging Characterization of the Eye and Adnexa of the Lesser Anteater (Tamandua tetradactyla).

The southern tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla) is a species vulnerable to environmental disturbances, largely due to increasing overlap between its natural habitat and anthropogenically modified landscapes. Detailed anatomical knowledge of the eye and orbital structures, supported by imaging and histological analyses, is essential to improve clinical, surgical and conservation practices for wild mammals. This study provides a comprehensive anatomical description of the eyeball and its adnexa in the southern tamandua. Twelve cadaveric specimens were examined using topographic dissection, orbital

Enucleation Due to Ocular Abscess in a Captive Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes): A Case Report from the Republic of Congo.

Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) rescued from the illegal wildlife trade often suffer from chronic, traumatic injuries that require specialized and prolonged medical treatment in wildlife rehabilitation centers. We present the case report of a two-year-old male chimpanzee admitted at the Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center in the Republic of Congo with a chronic periorbital abscess, likely caused by a machete wound sustained during the poaching of his mother. Despite receiving extended antimicrobial therapy, his condition was never fully controlled and progressed to a chronic orbital inf

Ambient wing cistern: History, anatomy, imaging and approaches: An overview.

BACKGROUND: The ambient cistern is a noncommunicating paramedian dorsal paired cistern according to the Liliequist classification. While the ambient wing cistern is described for the first time in 1875, Key and Retzius and firstly named in 1950 by Dr. Bengt Liliequist (1923-2008). Due to its complex tridimensional anatomy, it has been a subject of confusion in neuroanatomy. Historically, it has been given multiple anatomical definitions. Our paper focuses on the history, development, radiology, and lesions of the AC along with the AWC and explains the latter as an independently constant anatom

Cardiac-gated computed tomography angiography in three alpacas with complex congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of congenital heart disease is higher in camelids than in other domestic species and complex defects, often involving the great vessels, are more frequently encountered in llamas and alpacas than in other species. Some of these complex defects can be difficult to accurately characterize via echocardiography, the most commonly used diagnostic imaging technique to evaluate the heart in veterinary patients. Contrast-enhanced, electrocardiogram (ECG)-gated computed tomography (CT) has proven utility for the evaluation of human patients with certain congenital heart defec

Muscle growth and muscle function: a molecular biological perspective.

Molecular biological methods are pervading all biomedical fields and it is likely that they will soon introduce new techniques to veterinary diagnostics and have a major impact on food and fibre production in animal agriculture. The ability to manipulate muscle growth and phenotype will present new ethical problems, particularly if the techniques are used to manipulate muscle development in greyhounds and racehorses where the financial rewards could be very substantial. Muscle has been a useful tissue for the study of the molecular control of tissue development because terminal differentiation

Ultrasonographic Assessment of the Lungs in Asiatic Elephants (Elephas maximus).

Asian elephants possess a unique pulmonary anatomy that presents challenges for diagnosing respiratory diseases, particularly when reared under human care where environmental stressors, poor hygiene and limited physical activity predispose them to respiratory pathologies. Conventional diagnostic tools such as radiography, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are impractical for elephants due to their large body size. Diagnosis of lung pathologies is often delayed until postmortem. This study evaluated the diagnostic utility of lung ultrasound (LUS) as a noninvasive, r

A refined porcine lumbar spinal cord injury model facilitating postoperative care.

BACKGROUND: Pigs exhibit strong anatomical and neurological similarities to humans, making them valuable translational models for spinal cord injury (SCI) research. While most porcine SCI models target thoracic levels, these are often associated with significant postoperative management challenges, particularly related to urinary function. METHODS: To address these limitations, we characterized a refined lumbar SCI model targeting the L3 vertebral level in pigs, based on comparative anatomy and veterinary data. SCI was induced using a contusion-compression paradigm under per-operative C-arm f

Yolk sac development in dogs: from morphology to functional aspects.

The yolk sac (YS) is a multifunctional and essential structure for early maternal-fetal interactions, playing roles in nutrient supply, organogenesis, immune modulation, and hematopoiesis. Unlike most species, dogs maintain the YS until the end of pregnancy, yet little is known about its functional activity, particularly in later stages. Animal models are crucial for exploring maternal-fetal processes and offering insights into comparative development, including in humans. This study aimed to analyze the YS structure in canine embryos and fetuses at early (up to 20 days, n = 6), middle (21-40

Morphological and histochemical characterization of eyelids and orbital glands in the crocodile monitor (Varanus salvadorii).

The crocodile monitor is an arboreal predator, and its ocular adnexa remain poorly characterized. This study provides the first detailed histochemical characterization of the ocular adnexa in this species, including the upper and lower eyelids, the nictitating membrane, the Harderian gland, and the lacrimal gland, based on two adult individuals. Because the available material was limited, the findings should be interpreted as descriptive baseline observations. Histological slides were analyzed using microanatomical assessment, histochemistry, and Picrosirius Red staining under polarized light.

How to Dissect Zebrafish: A Standardized Sampling Protocol for Histological and Molecular Studies in Adult Zebrafish.

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) has become an essential model in fields such as developmental biology, toxicology, genetics, and regenerative medicine due to its low cost, small size, transparent embryos, and genetic similarity to humans. Nowadays, this model is increasingly recognized as a valuable tool in other fields, including veterinary medicine and animal production research, particularly aquaculture, due to its unique characteristics that make it suitable for studying economically significant diseases affecting production species. However, unlike established models such as mice, zebrafish l

Clinical Utility of Magnetic Resonance Urethrography in Assessment of Canine Urethra.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been widely used in human medicine for evaluating lower urinary tract diseases; however, its application in veterinary medicine remains limited. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To compare MRI with computed tomography (CT) in visualizing urethral and bladder wall layers and to assess the feasibility and diagnostic utility of MRI for evaluating lower urinary tract anatomy and pathology in dogs. It was hypothesized that the T2-weighted (T2W) sequence would provide the most distinct visualization of urethral layers, while the contrast-enhanced T1-weighted (

Computed Tomography of the Nasal Cavities and Paranasal Sinuses of Cattle at Different Ages.

BACKGROUND: The nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses of cattle are complex anatomical structures that undergo significant changes throughout growth and maturation. Computed tomography (CT) is increasingly used as a routine imaging modality in small animals but remains less common in cattle due to technical limitations. However, it provides valuable diagnostic insight into the nasal cavities and sinuses, which are difficult to assess and often involved in disease processes. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to provide a detailed description of these structures using CT in cattle of different ages i

Nonhuman Primate Models in Translational Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Nonhuman primates (NHPs) play a unique role in translational science by bridging the gap between basic and clinical investigations and are often seen as a last step before clinical application. They are widely utilized in biomedical research due to their anatomical and physiological similarities to humans. Examples of commonly used species include the genera Macaca (macaques), Papio (baboons), Aotus (owl monkeys), Callithrix (marmosets), Saimiri (squirrel monkeys), and Chlorocebus (vervet monkeys). SUMMARY: NHP models have played an instrumental role in the development of surgical

Incisional infections associated with ventral midline celiotomy in horses.

OBJECTIVE: To review the veterinary literature regarding healing and complications associated with equine celiotomy including anatomy and physiology, risk factors for incisional infection and hernia, and treatment. ETIOLOGY: Celiotomy is the most common approach to treat horses with surgical colic. Incision through the linea alba provides exposure to most of the abdomen for exploration, exteriorization, and correction of surgical lesions. Incisional apposition relies on suture strength during anesthetic recovery and for the first 30 days postoperatively. Factors associated with the patient, s

Establishment of a Sheep Model for Hind Limb Peripheral Nerve Injury: Common Peroneal Nerve.

Thousands of people worldwide suffer from peripheral nerve injuries and must deal daily with the resulting physiological and functional deficits. Recent advances in this field are still insufficient to guarantee adequate outcomes, and the development of new and compelling therapeutic options require the use of valid preclinical models that effectively replicate the characteristics and challenges associated with these injuries in humans. In this study, we established a sheep model for common peroneal nerve injuries that can be applied in preclinical research with the advantages associated with

Intermediate veins in swine (Sus scrofa domestica) kidney: authors' own anatomical classification.

BACKGROUND: The use of domestic swine as an experimental animal is increasing steadily. Swine organs are the best animal model for urological experiments. The aim of the study was to evaluate the course and size of intermediate veins in a swine kidney. The research results were compared with the results obtained from studies on venous vascularisation of human kidneys. The knowledge of the above-mentioned vessels is important both in human and veterinary medicine and will enable researchers to compare and notice differences between human and swine organs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was c

Veterinary education in South Africa: the classes of 1936 & 1937.

Concise descriptions are given of the varied life histories of the students of the classes of 1936 and 1937. Consisting of 14 students, the class of 1936 was the largest of the pre-war classes of the Onderstepoort Faculty. Three of the 6 students in the 1937 class were actually repeating their final year, therefore the total number described below is 17 rather than 20. The detailed analysis of their careers reveals the presence of a remarkable degree of variation. Although all except Brookes, who apparently went directly into the newly established practice of Jack Boswell, initially joined the
