Permanent significant hyperchromia, equivalent to hyperspherocytosis, the leading symptom of hereditary spherocytosis (HS), has become accessible to routine screening by hematologic automats using double angle laser technology. This has resulted in the discovery of a much higher incidence of this anomaly. In previous investigations we suggested the permanence of significant hyperchromia as obligate criterion for the diagnosis HS. Intercurrent normal percentages of hyperchromic RBC rather pointed to secondary, non-hereditary spherocytosis. Describing 6 typical cases, we demonstrate that occasio

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested an association of Helicobacter pylori and iron-deficiency anemia (IDA). This is a report of six cases of IDA associated with H. pylori gastritis.
METHODS: Six patients with IDA were studied (5 boys and 1 girl; mean age 13.6 years; range 13-15 years). Five had a medical history of long-standing IDA and of oral iron supplementation at outpatient clinics. The anemia recurred after the iron therapy had been discontinued. The sixth patient was admitted to the hospital with severe IDA. An extensive work-up was ordered that included technetium-99m (99mTc) sc

AIMS: chronic gastrointestinal bleeding is the most common cause of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in the general population. The objectives of this study were to determine the most frequent gastrointestinal lesions in IDA, the frequency and localization of potentially bleeding lesions, the value of the clinical history in diagnosis, the value of fecal occult blood testing, and the most appropriate diagnostic procedure for these patients.
METHODS: we prospectively studied 80 patients older than 40 years with IDA, using upper gastrointestinal tract (GI) endoscopy and colonoscopy, beginning with

The hematological indices (Hb, Ht, MCHC) and iron status (serum iron, TIBC, LIBC, transferrin saturation), the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia in 224 women aged 31 to 47 years, working in textile industry in Lódź were examined. Nutritional status was evaluated as follow: body height and weight, body mass index (BMI kg/m2) and body fat content (%) calculated from the four skinfolds sum. Anemia (Hb < 12 g/dl) was stated in 11.2% participating women, evident iron deficiency (Fes < 60 micrograms/dl, Sat % < 16) in 13.4% of population. The positive correlation was found among hematological ind

Anemia is frequently observed in patients with cancer owing to anticancer chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and inflammatory responses. This often leads to functional iron deficiency, characterized by adequate iron stores but impaired use of iron for red blood cell production. This condition, termed functional iron deficiency anemia (IDA), is identified by a ferritin level of 30-500 µg/dL and a transferrin saturation < 50%. Functional iron deficiency often develops with the prolonged use of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, leading to a diminished response to anemia treatment. Although oral ir

Anemia is common during pregnancy, and while most anemia is physiologic, the most common pathologic cause is iron deficiency. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends confirmation of iron deficiency anemia with iron studies when anemia is diagnosed during pregnancy but acknowledges that presumptive treatment for suspected iron deficiency anemia is common in practice. Currently ACOG does not recommend treating iron deficiency without anemia during pregnancy. Though the benefits of treating iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy are clear, the optimal route of i

(1) Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can cause several complications as a result of the acidic pH over various cellular structures, which have been demonstrated and evaluated over time. Anemia can occur due to iron loss from erosions caused by acidic gastric content. In children, anemia has consequences that, in time, can affect their normal development. This study evaluates the presence of anemia as a result of pediatric gastroesophageal reflux disease. (2) Methods: 172 children were diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux in the gastroenterology department of a regional chil

INTRODUCTION: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is common worldwide, and various iron replacement therapies are available. Ferumoxytol is an injectable, high-dose iron formulation (510 mg) that can be administered over a short period (15 min) without test administration. The drug was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2009 for the treatment of IDA in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and in 2018, the indication was expanded to include patients without CKD.
AREAS COVERED: This paper reviews studies testing the efficacy and safety of ferumoxytol in treating IDA compared with o

Introduction: Iron deficiency anemia is a major problem worldwide treated by replenishment of iron stores. The treatment is complicated by differing pharmacodynamics of administrative routes, equations with design effects, ongoing losses, additional daily requirement, plateauing of markers required for iron absorption, food-drug interactions, gender, and age. Accounting for these factors in one dosing regimen becomes difficult, specifically in males. This review aimed at analyzing multiple dosages of iron supplements in different studies and determining if there are factors that could individu

AIM: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is common in the pediatric population and often accompanied by mild thrombocytosis, but rarely profound thrombocytopenia is seen. We describe the data of children with IDA and thrombocytopenia in two centers and discuss the published data in the literature.
METHODS: In this retrospective case series, the medical records of patients under the age of 19 years old diagnosed with IDA in two tertiary medical centers over the last 10 years, were reviewed. The data were collected and compared to the data published in the medical literature.
RESULTS: All the patient

Anemic syndrome is common in 1/3 of the population, including iron deficiency anemia - in 1,5 billion people. Geriatric patients are one of the main risk group for anemia. Iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia lead to a decrease in quality of life, an increase in morbidity and mortality, what requires timely diagnosis and treatment. The diagnostic algorithm includes the analysis of iron metabolism, inflammation markers and instrumental tests to verify the cause of anemia. Modern oral and parenteral iron preparations are used for treatment under control of blood indexes and iron metabolism

Turmeric is increasingly studied as an anti-inflammatory and anti-neoplastic agent. It binds to ferric iron in the gut and causes iron deficiency in mice. We report here a possible case of iron deficiency anemia in a human taking turmeric. A 66-year-old physician treated himself for an osteoarthritis flare after steroids with six turmeric extract capsules (538 mg) daily, to help with inflammation. During this time, his hemoglobin never rose above 12 and his iron and ferritin levels were consistent with iron deficiency. Upper and lower endoscopy and Hemoccult™ studies were negative. Two weeks a

BACKGROUND: Due to the increase of breastfeeding in infants, iron deficiency anemia (IDA) related to prolonged, predominant breastfeeding should be of concern. Mostly, the manifestation of IDA is indistinguishable and the enthusiastic advocacy of breastfeeding without concomitant education of complementary food may lead to ignorance of breast milk-related IDA, which may result in impaired psychomotor development of the baby. This retrospective study was conducted to re-emphasize this easily ignored but still prevalent illness.
METHODS: This retrospective study involved 15 breastfeeding babies

Endoscopic gastrointestinal workup fails to establish the cause of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in a substantial proportion of patients. In patients referred for hematologic evaluation with unexplained or refractory IDA, screening for celiac disease, autoimmune gastritis, Helicobacter pylori, and hereditary forms of IDA is recommended. About 4% to 6% of patients with obscure refractory IDA have celiac disease, and autoimmune gastritis is encountered in 20% to 27% of patients. Stratification by age cohorts in autoimmune gastritis implies a disease presenting as IDA many years before the establi

Iron deficiency anemia arises when the balance of iron intake, iron stores, and the body's loss of iron are insufficient to fully support production of erythrocytes. Iron deficiency anemia rarely causes death, but the impact on human health is significant. In the developed world, this disease is easily identified and treated, but frequently overlooked by physicians. In contrast, it is a health problem that affects major portions of the population in underdeveloped countries. Overall, the prevention and successful treatment for iron deficiency anemia remains woefully insufficient worldwide, esp
