Depression, Anxiety, and Anger in Patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a syndrome of heterogeneous nature, affecting multiple systems, particularly the endocrine system. We propose to investigate the possible relationships among hormonal changes, levels of anxiety, depression, and anger in patients with PCOS. METHOD: Forty-four female patients with PCOS and 44 body mass index (BMI )-matched healthy women participated in this study. We measured the sociodemographic features, some serum hormonal levels (insulin, gonadotropins, prolactin, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), tri

Externalizing and internalizing subtypes of posttraumatic psychopathology and anger expression.

Subtypes of posttraumatic psychopathology were replicated and extended in 254 female veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Cluster analyses on Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 and Personality Psychopathology Five scales (Harkness, McNulty, & Ben-Porath, ) yielded internalizing and externalizing psychopathology dimensions, with a third low psychopathology group (simple PTSD). Externalizers were higher than the internalizers and the simple PTSD groups on the antisocial, substance, and aggression scales; internalizers were higher on depression and anxiety scales. Furthe

Longitudinal measurement invariance, stability and change of anger and cynicism.

Anger and hostility are key concepts in behavioral medicine, but little is known about their stability over life course. A sample of 3,074 individuals from six age groups (aged 15-30 at the baseline) were selected from a population-based study to examine longitudinal measurement invariance, stability and change in anger and cynicism from early to middle adulthood over 15 years. Cynicism, a facet of hostility, and anger were measured 4 times in 1992, 1997, 2001 and 2007. Final longitudinal measurement invariance models achieved partial strict measurement invariance, indicating good measurement

Anger and the heart: perspectives on cardiac risk, mechanisms and interventions.

In the popular imagination, anger has long been linked to cardiovascular diseases (CVD), but empirical validation from case-control and prospective studies emerged only in the 1970's. After describing the multidimensional nature of anger and its assessment (via self-report or observed in structured interviews), this paper selectively reviews evidence in (a) behavioral epidemiology, (b) stress and biological processes with implications for cardiopathogenesis, and (c) behavioral/pharmacological interventions for anger/hostility reduction. Although evidence is inconsistent, chronic feelings of an

The effects of analytical rumination, reappraisal, and distraction on anger experience.

The manner in which individuals recall negative life events has important affective consequences. The present experiment investigated the effects of emotion regulation strategies on anger experience. One hundred and twenty-one undergraduates recalled an anger-inducing memory and were instructed to engage in either analytical rumination, cognitive reappraisal, or distraction for 20 minutes. In the remaining (control) condition, participants were instructed to write about their thoughts but were not given any emotion regulation instructions. Rumination maintained anger, whereas participants in t

Predicting anger in social anxiety: The mediating role of rumination.

Anger and the way that anger is expressed have been linked to attrition and poorer treatment outcomes in patients with Social Anxiety Disorder (e.g., Erwin, B. A., Heimberg, R. G., Schneier, F. [French validation of the anger reactions and goals scale (RBC)].

BACKGROUND: The study presents the French validation of a German scale (AERZ) [Diagnostica 49 (2003) 97-109, revised Eur J Pers (2009)] measuring anger regulation. The French validation (RBC scale) comprises two subscales measuring seven anger reactions and seven anger goals. Disentangling dimensions related to anger reactions and anger goals, respectively, is the main advantage of this scale. In addition to seven cognitive-behavioral anger reactions (i.e., venting, rumination, submission, feedback, distraction, humor and downplaying the incident's negative impact), the RBC scale also addresse

Anger expression in children and adolescents: a review of the empirical literature.

Understanding the links between anger expression by children and adolescents, their health, and their interpersonal interactions is important given the evidence that anger is associated with maladjustment and illness among adults. This review covers: 1) possible origins of the awareness and expression of anger; 2) assessment of anger in children and adolescents, including both self-report and observational approaches; 3) implications of anger expression for interpersonal relationships; and 4) outcomes of anger expression. Dimensions of anger expression found in adults have been corroborated to

Anger, hostility and aggression in the first days of acute stroke.

In acute stroke patients, anger can disturb management and rehabilitation and creates a stressful situation for family, health-care providers and other patients. We aim to describe the presence of anger and its association with demographic, clinical, psychiatric, lesion variables and functional outcome in acute stroke patients. We screened anger prospectively in 202 consecutive acute stroke patients (< or =4 days) using eight items from three psychiatric scales (Catastrophic Reaction Scale, Mania Rating Scale and Comprehensive Psychopathological Rating Scale). Anger was present if the patient

The roles of marriage and anger dysregulation in biobehavioral stress responses.

Physiological and behavioral correlates of anger dysregulation in adults were evaluated in the context of marital stress. Fifty-four married couples participated in a series of laboratory procedures that included electrocardiogram measures during a 15-min marital conflict interaction and an interview assessing their inability to regulate anger (anger dysregulation). Results from the multivariate regression analyses indicated that the nature of the couple's relationship, rather than individual levels of anger dysregulation, predicted lower parasympathetic cardiac activity (indexed by high-frequ

Anger and narcissism: between the void of being and the hunger for having.

The borderline syndrome, a typical marginal structure, is certainly a specific, autonomous pathology, with its own distinctive characteristics: among them, acting out, cyclical repetition of events without historical progression and anaclitic depression. Kohut's concept of 'narcissistic hunger' is particularly pertinent to the borderline condition: the borderline patient hungers to have that which is missing in his being. Through the application of the related notions of 'tragic man', 'self objects', 'grandiose self', and 'damaged self', the authors further develop their theory that the border

An empirical test of alternate theories of anger in early adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Anger is an especially important phenomenon to understand in early adolescents. While many explanatory theories of state anger can be applied to early adolescents, few, if any, researchers have attempted to test these theories in this age group. OBJECTIVE: To test three theories explaining state anger vis-a-vis each other using hierarchical analysis of sets. METHOD: This was a theory-testing study with a complex correlational design. A total of 141 adolescents aged 12 to 14 years responded to the State Anger Scale and instruments measuring variables linked to stress theory (perce

Measurement of hostility, anger, and depression in depressed and nondepressed subjects.

This study examined the relationship between hostility and depression in depressed and nondepressed subjects as well as the reliability and validity of several measures of anger, hostility and depression. Sixty-nine subjects were evaluated for depression using the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD; Hamilton, 1960). These subjects were then administered the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI; Beck, Ward, Mendelson, Mock, & Ergaugh, 1961), Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory (BDHI; Buss & Durkee, 1957), Hostility and Direction of Hostility Questionnaire (HDHQ; Foulds, Caine, & Creasy, 1960) and

Self-ratings of anger and hostility in borderline personality disorder.

Forty-six patients with borderline personality disorder with and without major depression and 27 normal volunteers completed the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory, a self-rating scale of anger and hostility. The patients with borderline personality had significantly higher scores than the normal volunteers. The scores of the patients with borderline personality disorders were not related to gender, treatment or research setting, the degree of acute distress, or the presence of major depression. These findings suggest that a proneness to anger and hostility are enduring characteristics of borderl

Anxiety management training and anger control for type A individuals.

The present study sought to explore whether training Type A coronary-prone individuals in stress management would result in a diminution of Type A behaviors. The effectiveness of a single-method approach that focused specifically on anger management was tested. Results showed that the treatment, a modified version of Suinn's Anxiety Management Training, was associated with significant reductions in Type A inventory (Jenkins Activity Survey) scores. Two possible explanations for the results were entertained. First, Type A subjects may have experienced a sense of increased control over potential

Anger and its control in Graeco-Roman and modern psychology.

Modern psychologists have studied the phenomena of anger and hostility with diverse methodologies and from a variety of theoretical orientations. The close relationships between anger and aggression, psychosomatic disorder and personal unhappiness, make the understanding and control of anger an important individual and social goal. For all of its sophistication and accomplishment, however, most of the modern research demonstrates, to its disadvantage, a lack of historical perspective with respect to the analysis and treatment of anger, whether normal or pathological. This attitude has deprived

Parental and infant predictors of infant anger and fear reactivity.

INTRODUCTION: Infant regulation capacities result from a complex learning process influenced both by infant inborn dispositions and parental capacities for effective co-regulation. At the end of their first year of life, infants differ in their capacity to modulate anger and fear, two evolutionary adaptive emotions with important guiding functions for infant behavior. AIM: The aim of this pilot study was to elicit associations of anger and fear reactivity with parental mind-mindedness, parental sensitivity, and infant early regulation. METHODS: In a sample of 47 families with infants aged 10

Anger and suicidality in veterans: Impact of postseparation time and combat.

OBJECTIVE: The study investigated the association over time between the rates of anger/hostility and suicidality in post-9/11 veterans as a function of time following separation from the military and combat exposure. METHOD: Structured clinical interviews were conducted with N = 2,580 Iraq/Afghanistan-era U.S. military veterans serving since 9/11/01. For each participant, a postseparation interval was calculated as the time between military separation and the clinical interview, with a range of up to 9 years. Combat exposure was assessed using a three-level categorical proxy derived from the
