BACKGROUND: Surveillance of sporadic renal angiomyolipomas is a growing issue for physicians and radiologists. Current treatment recommendations favor active surveillance. However, the evidence underlying these is based on small case series, which also typically include angiomyolipomas associated with tuberous sclerosis.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the natural growth pattern of sporadic renal angiomyolipomas in patients without tuberous sclerosis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective review was performed in three separate tertiary referral centers. A keyword search of each institutions PACS histor

INTRODUCTION: Angiomyolipoma (AML), a benign mesenchymal tumor that commonly arises from the kidney, may be associated with tuberous sclerosis complex and perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas). Nasal angiomyolipoma is very rare and usually occurs in elderly individuals with epistaxis and nasal obstruction.
CASE REPORT: We report a rare case of nasal angiomyolipoma in a young male. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first documented case of angiomyolipoma originating from the posterior end of the inferior turbinate, clinically mimicking juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA

While renal angiomyolipomas (AMLs) generally remain small and asymptomatic, larger AMLs are more common in tuberous sclerosis patients. Giant AMLs over 20 cm are a rare entity and little is known about their management. We present a unique case of a 48-year-old woman with tuberous sclerosis and a 39 cm AML arising from a solitary kidney, after undergoing nephrectomy for a prior AML. Giant renal AMLs can occur in patients with tuberous sclerosis and resection should be considered even for large tumors. Renal sparing is often difficult and patients should be counseled about potential need for po

Angiomyolipomas (AMLs) are the most common mesenchymal renal neoplasms and are classified as neoplasms of perivascular epithelioid cells (PEComa). AML is usually a benign neoplasm arising most often in the kidney although it has been described in a wide variety of sites. Most patients are adults, and one-third suffer from tuberous sclerosis. We describe a case of renal AML in a 54-year-old Bahraini woman who presented to the Bahrain Defence Force Hospital with right flank pain and hematuria, and who was known to have rheumatoid arthritis but had no cutaneous or other stigmata of tuberous scler

Angiomyolipomas are benign neoplasms composed of smooth muscle, vasculature, and mature adipose tissue, which most commonly occur in the kidney and located in the head and neck region. A very rare neoplasm, there are only 3 cases of angiomyolipoma in the parotid gland that have been reported to date. Here, we report a case of a 38-year-old man who had a slow-growing mass in the parotid gland for the past 7 years. The results of a physical examination revealed a rubbery mass that was 2.5 cm in diameter in the below superficial lobe of the left parotid gland. A computed tomographic scan showed a

Epithelioid angiomyolipoma is a recently described rare variant of renal angiomyolipoma. It can occur in patients with or without tuberous sclerosis. We report the imaging findings of a case of epithelioid angiomyolipoma that showed the presence of fatty tissue undifferentiated from the typical angiomyolipoma at the beginning. After partial nephrectomy, tumour recurrence occurred two years later, presenting as completely solid tumours with no adipose tissue, and with invasion into the psoas muscle and left adrenal gland. Differentiation of this tumour from renal cell carcinoma is difficult. Bo

Angiomyolipomas (AMLs), a form of benign mesenchymal hamartoma, arise primarily in the kidneys of patients with or without tuberous sclerosis. Extra-renal AMLs are very rare and are most commonly found in the liver. AMLs of the small intestine are exceedingly rare. Here, a case of a 28-year-old man, who presented with ileal intussusception caused by ileal AML is reported. The clinicopathological and immunohistochemical findings of ileal AMLs are discussed and the literature on small intestinal AMLs is reviewed.

Angiomyolipomas are benign mesenchymal tumors consisting of blood vessels, smooth muscle, and fat. These noninvasive lesions characteristically manifest in renal tissue but may arise less frequently in extrarenal locations including the mediastinum. Only 8 cases of mediastinal angiomyolipomas have been reported in the literature, 3 of which were reported in the English literature, and only 2 of which were located in the anterior mediastinum. We report a surgically confirmed case of an anterior mediastinal angiomyolipoma incidentally discovered in an asymptomatic patient, in whom a screening br

Renal angiomyolipoma (AML) is a benign renal tumour and is nowadays considered a relatively common lesion. When an AML increases in size or becomes symptomatic, embolisation via the renal artery should then be considered, because rupture is an important complication and interventional therapies are required to stop bleeding. We present a 21 year old woman who was seen at the emergency department following a low velocity trauma. After a period of 9 weeks, clinical examination and radiological examination revealed a haemorrhage from a renal AML, which was treated by selective embolisation. A dis

The authors report on a premenopausal female hemodialysis patient with relapsing pneumothorax, in whom the diagnosis of pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) was made. Ten years earlier, she had retroperitoneal bleeding from a kidney tumor corresponding to an angiomyolipoma (AML). The association between renal AML and pulmonary LAM is reviewed. Renal AML represents the most frequent extrapulmonary manifestation of pulmonary LAM. It is found in 32% to 60 % of cases in which a systematic search with abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan is done. The latter approach is advised to help avoid

A case of bilateral angiomyolipoma which was complicated with retroperitoneal massive hemorrhage and in which right-nephrectomy was performed is reported. Eight years ago, this patient had tuberous sclerosis and underwent open renal biopsy with which the diagnosis was confirmed. This patient was admitted for shock caused by the retroperitoneal massive hemorrhage from tumor. For about 30 days, the patient was treated conservatively, such as blood transfusion and hyperalimentation, but retroperitoneal massive hemorrhage reoccurred and the patient underwent right-nephrectomy. The treatment for bi

PEComas or Perivascular Epithelioid Cell neoplasms are uncommon mesenchymal origin neoplasms composed of perivascular epithelioid cells. They affect various anatomic sites, kidneys being one of them. Renal PEComas are further rare, posing a challenge to include them in the differential diagnoses. We present a case of a type of renal PEComa in a 54-year old post-menopausal female with vague abdominal pain. Imaging revealed a large left perinephric mass initially suspected to be a liposarcoma. Surgical excision and subsequent histopathological evaluation confirmed a benign, fat predominant renal

Angiomyolipomas (AMLs) are the most common benign renal tumours. Most of these neoplasms are found incidentally on imaging. However, symptomatic presentation does exist. Renal AMLs are typically composed of smooth muscle, blood vessels, and adipose tissue. Because of the abundant fat tissue, they give a characteristic appearance on imaging and are therefore easily diagnosed. However, sometimes they contain too little fat to be detected. This increases the difficulty in differentiating them from renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Management of AML is based on clinical presentation and should be indivi

Primary tumors of the heart are rare. In the literature operations for heart tumors account for 0.3% of all cardiac surgical procedures. We report a very rare case of primary cardiac angiomyolipoma. A 39-years-old man was admitted with chest discomfort. A mass was detected in the left ventricular myocardium by enhanced chest computed tomography. We performed resection of the intramyocardial tumor under cardiopulmonary bypass. Pathologic examination revealed a 4×3×3 cm, dome-shaped, solid tumor composed of a mixture of blood vessels, smooth muscle, and fat tissue. Histopathological findings sho

A 49-year-old man was demonstrated to have two tumors in the right kidney by computed tomographic scan during an examination for cholelithiasis. One was a fat rich solid tumor which was clinically diagnosed as angiomyolipoma, and the other was an unconfirmed cystic tumor. Cholecystectomy and radical nephrectomy were performed. Based on pathological findings, the solid tumor was diagnosed as common angiomyolipoma and the cystic tumor as angiomyolipoma with epithelial cysts (AMLEC). The cystic tumor consisted of 3 components : an epithelial cyst lined with single flat to cuboidal cells, a subepi

Herein we report a case of epithelioid angiomyolipoma of the kidney which is a rare subtype of angiomyolipoma. A 68-year-old man without a history of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) was referred to our department with a 40 × 84 mm left renal tumor incidentally detected by computed tomography. Computed tomography demonstrated a left renal heterogeneous mass which was enhanced at the early phase and washed out at the late phase. A tumor thrombus was seen extending into the main renal vein. No metastatic disease was evident. Thus, on the diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma, the patient underwent a
