Mediastinal angioleiomyoma.

We report a case of a mediastinal angioleiomyoma. The patient was a 64-year-old previously healthy man. Computed tomographic scan revealed a well-circumscribed tumor with a diameter of approximately 2 cm in the right anterior mediastinum. We removed the tumor through a midline sternotomy. Microscopic examination revealed a highly vascular mesenchymal tumor without cellular dysplasia or mitotic figures.

[Leiomyosarcoma of larynx and hypopharynx].

The laryngeal and hypopharyngeal smooth muscle tumors are very rare. One case of hypopharyngeal leiomyosarcoma and two cases of laryngeal smooth muscle tumors were reported: one angioleiomyoma, one leiomyosarcoma and one carcinoleiomyosarcoma. The patients usually present no characteristic symptoms in early stage and the clinical symptoms are similar to squamous cell carcinoma. It is difficult to make a correct diagnosis before operation. Treatment of first choice consists of primary radical resection including a large part of normal tissue. Early lymph node metastasis is rare. Precautary neck

The dural angioleiomyoma harbors frequent GJA4 mutation and a distinct DNA methylation profile.

The International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA) has defined four vascular lesions in the central nervous system (CNS): arteriovenous malformations, cavernous angiomas (also known as cerebral cavernous malformations), venous malformations, and telangiectasias. From a retrospective central radiological and histopathological review of 202 CNS vascular lesions, we identified three cases of unclassified vascular lesions. Interestingly, they shared the same radiological and histopathological features evoking the cavernous subtype of angioleiomyomas described in the soft tissue.

Rare giant primary intracranial angioleiomyoma in lateral ventricle: a case report and the literature review.

Background: Angioleiomyomas are benign tumors and can occur in subcutaneous tissues all over the body, and lower extremities are more common. Primary intracranial angioleiomyomas are rare. We present a case of intracranial angioleiomyoma and review the literature.Case description: A 35-year-old Chinese women presented with one-year history of the left leg claudication. MRI revealed a 6.3 × 7.4 × 5.4 cm lesion located in the lateral ventricle, which, to our knowledge is the first lateral ventricle ALM reported. The tumor was resected. The pathological results were consistent with angioleiomyoma

Dermoscopy of cutaneous smooth muscle neoplasms: a morphological study of 136 cases.

BACKGROUND: A variety of cutaneous smooth muscle neoplasms may arise in the skin and are frequently unrecognized by clinicians. There is sparse data relating to the dermoscopy of piloleiomyomas (PL), and nothing has been published about the dermoscopy of angioleiomyomas (AL) and leiomyosarcomas (LS). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the morphological findings of a large series of cutaneous PL, AL and LS under dermoscopic observation, comparing these findings among them. METHODS: Digital dermoscopic images of 136 histopathologically confirmed cases of cutaneous smooth muscle neoplasms (114 PL, 13 AL a

Ultrasonographic Findings of Subcutaneous Angioleiomyomas in the Extremities Based on Pathologic Subtypes.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe the ultrasonographic findings of angioleiomyoma based on pathological subtypes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-nine patients with subcutaneous angioleiomyomas in the extremities were retrospectively reviewed by two radiologists and a pathologist. Sonographic images were analyzed to evaluate each tumor's anatomic location, size, shape, margin, heterogeneity, echogenicity, associated findings, and vascularity. RESULTS: Angioleiomyomas were divided into 3 subtypes: capillary (n = 16), venous (n = 22), and cavernous (n = 1). The one cavernous a

Primary Intracranial Angioleiomyomas as Rare, Nonmalignant, and Distinct Neoplastic Entities: A Series of 8 Cases and a Literature Review.

OBJECTIVE: Primary intracranial angioleiomyoma is a rare and distinct neoplasm. Only 29 cases have been reported previously, and we aimed to investigate the clinical and radiopathologic features of these lesions. METHODS: Medical records and radiographs of 8 patients (7 male and 1 female; mean age: 48.7 years) at our institution were reviewed retrospectively. Patient follow-up and a literature review were performed. RESULTS: The most common preoperative symptom was a visual defect (n = 2), followed by diplopia (n = 1) and abducens paralysis (n = 1). Three patients were asymptomatic. The para

Use of the inverted "T" incision to approach a plantar nodular lesion.

Knowledge of the inverted "T" incision--used in plastic, oncologic and orthopedic surgery--has allowed its adaptation for the diagnostic assessment and therapeutical approach of acral, nodular lesions. The authors describe the use of this technique for the surgical approach of a patient with a plantar nodular lesion, further diagnosed as a calcified angioleiomyoma.

Hand and finger, ultrasound-guided, percutaneous core needle biopsies: A safe procedure with high diagnostic accuracy.

INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE: To determine the diagnostic accuracy and complication rates of ultrasound-guided, percutaneous core needle biopsies of soft tissue masses in the hand and fingers. METHODS: Reports from all ultrasound-guided procedures between 21 May 2014 and 17 March 2022 were queried for keywords including "hand", OR "finger", AND "biopsy". Patient demographics, lesion size and location, biopsy needle gauge and the number of cores obtained were recorded. The final pathology of the mass excision was then compared with the core needle biopsy (CNB) for each patient. RESULTS: Sixty-six rec

A rare case of orbital angioleiomyoma.

A 65-year old woman presented with 3-year history of painless, gradual swelling of the right upper eyelid associated with proptosis. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the orbit showed a well circumscribed soft tissue mass in the supero-lateral orbit. An excision biopsy of the lesion was performed via lateral orbitotomy. Histopathology examination and immunochemistry staining confirmed the diagnosis of cavernous angioleiomyoma. The tumour was excised completely. Orbital angioleiomyoma is a rare benign tumour and the lesion can cause visual morbidity, particularly

Cutaneous angioleiomyoma of the auricle: a painless variant of a painful tumour.

Cutaneous angioleiomyomas (ALMs) are uncommon benign tumours of the skin which derive from the smooth muscle layer of dermal blood vessels. They usually present as tender nodules in the fifth or sixth decade of life, predominantly in the legs of females. These tumours rarely present on the head and neck, especially the ear. Head and neck ALMs differ from their more common leg counterparts in that they are painless. Additionally, they do not manifest with a female predominance. Herein, a new case of a painless auricular ALM in a 63-year-old man is reported.

Acral and digital angioleiomyomata: 14-year experience at the Cleveland Clinic and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Angioleiomyoma is a benign neoplasm thought to derive from the tunica media of small venous vessels. Angioleiomyomata most frequently occur in the lower extremities with less common occurrences on the trunk, head and upper extremities. Few cases of acral and digital angioleiomyoma have been described in the literature. METHODS: We add a series of 21 patients with acral angioleiomyoma including 6 cases of digital angioleiomyoma to the body of clinical and histological findings along with a review of the literature of digital angioleiomyomata. RESULTS: Digital angioleiomyoma are eq

Angioleiomyoma of the falx.

A 43-year-old man arrived at the emergency department following a syncopal episode. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance images demonstrated a small interhemispheric, anterior parafalcine mass that mimicked a meningioma. Surgical excision and subsequent pathologic evaluation revealed an angioleiomyoma and the patient recovered without incident. Angioleiomyomas are classified as benign smooth muscle tumors and are classically seen in adult females arising in the soft tissues of the lower extremities. Although rare, these masses have been described in various intracranial locations, usuall

Case of rectal angioleiomyoma in a female patient.

Angioleiomyoma represents a benign stromal tumor, which usually occurs in the subcutaneous tissue of the extremities, although its occurrence in the gastrointestinal tract is very rare. A case of rectal angioleiomyoma in a 40 year-old female patient is described here. Six months earlier, the patient suffered from periodical prolapse of an oval tumor from the anus, along with difficulties in bowel movement. A transanal extirpation of the tumor was performed. This is the first reported case in the English literature of a patient presenting with prolapsed angioleiomyoma of the rectum. During the

Painless giant angioleiomyoma in the subfascia of the lower leg.

Angioleiomyoma is rare, benign vascular smooth muscle tumor originating from the tunica media of the veins and arteries. It usually presents as a slow-growing, small, and painful mass arising from the cutaneous or subcutaneous tissue. We report an unusual case of angioleiomyoma that was located in the subfascia of the lower leg and had grown to massive size (≤5 cm in diameter) during a 3-year period without pain. A 57-year-old female presented with a 3-year history of a slowly growing pain-free mass on the anterior portion of her right lower leg, just above the ankle joint. Magnetic resonance
