Toward robot-assisted vascular microsurgery in the retina.

BACKGROUND: Experimental protocol in our laboratory routinely requires the precise placement of instruments at, or near, the retina. Although manipulators for placing an instrument within the eye presently exist, none of the designs were satisfactory due to limitations on size, accuracy and operability. To overcome these limitations, we have developed a novel six degree of freedom manipulator designed specifically for retinal microsurgery. METHODS: The manipulator is parallel in structure and provides submicrometer positioning of an instrument within the constrained environment of the eye. Th

The Translation of Movement From the Equine to Rider With Relevance for Hippotherapy.

Although horseback riding is a well-established means of rehabilitation therapy for a variety of human patients, there are few data on the biomechanical relationships between horse and rider during such hippotherapy. We simultaneously tracked the movements of a horse with several different novice riders, under conditions similar to hippotherapy, to evaluate whether horses pass the same motion to different riders while being lead at a walk. Riders were outfitted with a goniometric data collection system that recorded the angles of flexion and extension and lateral bending of the thoracic and lu

Dog-assisted therapy on Hong Kong children with autism spectrum disorder: an exploratory randomized controlled trial.

UNLABELLED: Dog-assisted therapy (DAT) has become a promising complementary approach, providing social and emotional support for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Research on the effects of DAT on multiple functions in children with ASD is limited, and the results are inconsistent. Our study aimed to evaluate the effect of DAT with an RCT study on both psychosocial problems and overall well-being in children with ASD in Hong Kong. An exploratory randomized controlled trial was conducted from February 2023 to November 2024, involving 64 children with ASD aged 6 to 15 years. Augmented Reality: A Brand New Challenge for the Assessment and Treatment of Psychological Disorders.

Augmented Reality is a new technological system that allows introducing virtual contents in the real world in order to run in the same representation and, in real time, enhancing the user's sensory perception of reality. From another point of view, Augmented Reality can be defined as a set of techniques and tools that add information to the physical reality. To date, Augmented Reality has been used in many fields, such as medicine, entertainment, maintenance, architecture, education, and cognitive and motor rehabilitation but very few studies and applications of AR exist in clinical psychology

Genetic insights, disease mechanisms, and biological therapeutics for Waardenburg syndrome.

Waardenburg syndrome (WS), also known as auditory-pigmentary syndrome, is the most common cause of syndromic hearing loss (HL), which accounts for approximately 2-5% of all patients with congenital hearing loss. WS is classified into four subtypes depending on the clinical phenotypes. Currently, pathogenic mutations of PAX3, MITF, SOX10, EDN3, EDNRB or SNAI2 are associated with different subtypes of WS. Although supportive techniques like hearing aids, cochlear implants, or other assistive listening devices can alleviate the HL symptom, there is no cure for WS to date. Recently major progress

Effect of a single session of Equine Assisted Physical Therapy on postural stability in children with Down syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Equine Assisted Physiotherapy (EAPT; formerly known as hippotherapy) is known to improve functional mobility, gross motor skills, and postural stability in individuals with Down syndrome (DS). However, it may be challenging to implement as a long-term intervention. The aim of the current study was to assess whether even a single session of EAPT can have effect on postural stability in children with DS. METHODS: Nine children with DS underwent a single session of EAPT. Postural stability before and immediately after the EAPT session was assessed with the bipedal stance (variabili

The effectiveness of hippotherapy simulation exercises for muscle strength, disease activity and quality of life in sedentary adults with ankylosing spondylitis.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: Newly created systems called hippotherapy simulators (HS) mimic the primitive movements of a live horse. As they are new systems, research examining their usefulness has been well received. The aim of this study is to research the effects of HS on disease activity, quality of life and muscle strength in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). METHODS: In a prospective, assessor-blinded, block-randomized trial, 48 AS patients were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive either HS or conventional home (CH) exercise therapy. All Participants received 48 sessions, t

Analysis of distributed-collaborative activity during augmented reality exposure therapy for cockroach phobia.

Recent research presents Augmented Reality Exposure Therapy (ARET) for treatment of phobia of cockroaches as a potentially effective technique. However, to the authors' knowledge no studies have been published concerning the Human-Computer-Interaction issues of such a system. The aim of this paper is to report some preliminary data on how patients, therapists and an Augmented Reality system collaborate and interact during the therapeutic process. The results show that the therapeutic process is distributed between individuals (patient and therapist) and artifacts (e.g. AR cockroaches, a comput

Delivery of cardiovascular progenitors with biomimetic microcarriers reduces adverse ventricular remodeling in a rat model of chronic myocardial infarction.

Despite tremendous progress in cell-based therapies for heart repair, many challenges still exist. To enhance the therapeutic potential of cell therapy one approach is the combination of cells with biomaterial delivery vehicles. Here, we developed a biomimetic and biodegradable micro-platform based on polymeric microparticles (MPs) capable of maximizing the therapeutic potential of cardiac progenitor cells (CPCs) and explored its efficacy in a rat model of chronic myocardial infarction. The transplantation of CPCs adhered to MPs within the infarcted myocardial microenvironment improved the lon

The science of neonatal high-frequency ventilation.

Despite improvements in respiratory care, ventilator-induced lung injury remains an important cause of morbidity and mortality in neonates who require assisted ventilation. Animal data clearly demonstrate that high-frequency ventilation can be used successfully to reduce lung injury in experimental models of acute lung injury. These models and human research show that the efficacy of high-frequency ventilation is dependent on optimizing functional residual capacity and avoiding lung overinflation. When used with a strategy that promotes lung recruitment, high-frequency ventilation effectively

Psychedelics and the Serotonin Hypothesis of Eating Disorders.

Recent advances in psychedelic research have renewed interest in their therapeutic potential for psychiatric disorders characterized by cognitive and behavioral rigidity. This review examines the rationale for using serotonergic psychedelics-particularly 5-HT2A receptor agonists such as psilocybin-in the treatment of eating disorders (EDs), including anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge eating disorder (BED). The paper contextualizes these interventions within the broader serotonin hypothesis of EDs, emphasizing serotonergic dysregulation and impaired cognitive flexibility as

"Recovering With Nature": A Review of Ecotherapy and Implications for the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Connection with nature has been considered beneficial for psychological well-being since times of evolution. Differences in Indian and Western thoughts have viewed natural elements in different lights, varying between eco-centrism to anthropocentrism. The intrusion of technology and digitalized lives as a result of globalization has decreased connectedness with nature. Ecotherapy is a novel form of psychotherapeutic technique based on explicit environmental or ecological interventions. Social and therapeutic horticulture, animal-assisted interventions, care farming, green exercise, environment

Person-centered older military veteran care when there are consequences.

The consequences of each war present themselves in many ways and differently within a veteran's lifetime. For civilian nurses to give applicable, vital care to the older veteran, they need to deeply appreciate the military culture, the strength of the ethos, as well as the various health concerns connected with the individual war/conflict. Attentiveness to the evolving health issues of older veterans are a priority at a time when many personal developmental changes are also creating life stressors for the Vietnam veterans and they are often presenting to civilian health facilities for their ca

Pharmacological approaches promoting stem cell-based therapy following ischemic stroke insults.

Stroke can lead to long-term neurological deficits. Adult neurogenesis, the continuous generation of newborn neurons in distinct regions of the brain throughout life, has been considered as one of the appoaches to restore the neurological function following ischemic stroke. However, ischemia-induced spontaneous neurogenesis is not suffcient, thus cell-based therapy, including infusing exogenous stem cells or stimulating endogenous stem cells to help repair of injured brain, has been studied in numerous animal experiments and some pilot clinical trials. While the effects of cell-based therapy o

IL-17 sequestration via salivary gland gene therapy in a mouse model of Sjogren's syndrome suppresses disease-associated expression of the putative autoantigen Klk1b22.

INTRODUCTION: IL-17 has a putative role in the pathophysiology of Sjogren's syndrome (SS) and has been shown to be upregulated in the salivary glands of affected individuals. Sequestration of IL-17 with Adenoviral-mediated gene therapy has previously shown a benefit upon the SS-like phenotype in the Aec1/Aec2 mouse model. We sought to understand the proteomic consequences of IL-17 sequestration in the salivary gland of this mouse model as a means of illuminating the role of IL-17 in SS-like disease. METHODS: Ultrasound-assisted gene transfer (UAGT) was utilized to express a fusion protein com

Innovating spinal muscular atrophy models in the therapeutic era.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a severe, monogenetic, neuromuscular disease. A thorough understanding of its genetic cause and the availability of robust models has led to the development and approval of three gene-targeting therapies. This is a unique and exciting development for the field of neuromuscular diseases, many of which remain untreatable. The development of therapies for SMA not only opens the door to future therapeutic possibilities for other genetic neuromuscular diseases, but also informs us about the limitations of such treatments. For example, treatment response varies widel

[Effects of having dogs in the hospital on healthcare professionals].

The use of therapy dogs in hospitals to promote the well-being of patients and healthcare professionals is an innovative concept. The objective of this cross-sectional observational study using a questionnaire is to describe the impact of their presence on hospital staff. The majority of participants reported positive effects: a more humanizing environment, emotional support, and a sense of lightheartedness. The survey also shows an improvement in working conditions, suggesting that a structured model for integrating dogs can serve as a lever for improving staff well-being.
