Understanding zoonotic spillover interfaces for the design of a One Health education intervention: a qualitative baseline study from rural Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Prevention of zoonotic spillover requires an understanding of how human, animal, and environmental interactions shape risk in everyday life. Efforts have focused largely on surveillance and response rather than on primary prevention informed by lived experience. In Southeast Asia-a recognised hotspot for zoonotic emergence-there is limited qualitative evidence describing how spillover risk is shaped by routine practices, environmental change, and structural constraints, and how such evidence can inform the design of One Health education interventions. METHODS: We conducted a forma

Early changes in experimental hydrocephalus.

In acute obstruction of the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) absorption pathways, fluid is produced more rapidly than it is absorbed, and the ventricles enlarge proximal to the obstructions. Communicating hydrocephalus results from a difference between the rates of production and absorption of cerebrospinal fluid. In animals with chronic communicating hydrocephalus, the initial pathologic changes appear to involve the periventricular tissue near the angles of the lateral ventricles. The present investigation was designed to identify the various changes associated with the production of communicatin

Parent Perceptions of Animal-Assisted Therapy for Pediatric Dental Patients with Special Health Care Needs: A Pilot Survey Study.

Purpose: This cross-sectional study examined parents' (parents, caregivers) perceptions of animal-assisted therapy (AAT) for pediatric dental patients with special health care needs (SHCN) and whether it would be welcomed in pediatric dental clinics. Methods: One hundred parents of patients with SHCN completed an online survey assessing their interest in and expectations of and concerns about AAT in pediatric dental clinics. Chi-square tests compared the anticipated impact based on child anxiety, fear, and prior AAT experience. Results: Parents of children who were anxious (63%) or had prior A

In vitro models of the gut-liver axis: what we've learned and what remains to be built.

The gut-liver axis maintains metabolic homeostasis and immune regulation through continuous bidirectional communication, and its dysregulation contributes to a range of metabolic, inflammatory, and immune-mediated diseases. Integrated gut-liver axis model systems offer unique tools for dissecting these complex interactions by isolating individual variables that are difficult to disentangle in vivo, while allowing flexible experimental controls over them. Here, we review advances in gut-liver axis models from static co-cultures to microfluidic systems and their applications in pharmacokinetic a

Children's use of communicative intent in the selection of cooperative partners.

Within the animal kingdom, human cooperation represents an outlier. As such, there has been great interest across a number of fields in identifying the factors that support the complex and flexible variety of cooperation that is uniquely human. The ability to identify and preferentially interact with better social partners (partner choice) is proposed to be a major factor in maintaining costly cooperation between individuals. Here we show that the ability to engage in flexible and effective partner choice behavior can be traced back to early childhood. Specifically, across two studies, we demo

An auditory region in the primate insular cortex responding preferentially to vocal communication sounds.

Human imaging studies implicate the insular cortex in processing complex sounds and vocal communication signals such as speech. In addition, lesions of the insula often manifest as deficits in sound or speech recognition (auditory agnosia) and speech production. While models of acoustic perception assign an important role to the insula, little is known about the underlying neuronal substrate. Studying a vocal primate, we identified a predominantly auditory region in the caudal insula and therein discovered a neural representation of conspecific communication sounds. When probed with natural so

Body language signals for rodent social communication.

Integration of social cues to initiate adaptive emotional and behavioral responses is a fundamental aspect of animal and human behavior. In humans, social communication includes prominent nonverbal components, such as social touch, gestures and facial expressions. Comparative studies investigating the neural basis of social communication in rodents has historically been centered on olfactory signals and vocalizations, with relatively less focus on non-verbal social cues. Here, we outline two exciting research directions: First, we will review recent observations pointing to a role of social fa

Agmatine rescues autistic behaviors in the valproic acid-induced animal model of autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is an immensely challenging developmental disorder characterized primarily by two core behavioral symptoms of social communication deficits and restricted/repetitive behaviors. Investigating the etiological process and identifying an appropriate therapeutic target remain as formidable challenges to overcome ASD due to numerous risk factors and complex symptoms associated with the disorder. Among the various mechanisms that contribute to ASD, the maintenance of excitation and inhibition balance emerged as a key factor to regulate proper functioning of neuronal cir

Toxoplasma gondii in a Remote Subsistence Hunting-Based Indigenous Community of the Peruvian Amazon.

Toxoplasma gondii is a ubiquitous zoonotic protozoan parasite that infects a wide variety range of warm-blooded animals. This study describes the epidemiological scenario of T. gondii in an indigenous community that relies on subsistence hunting in a well-conserved and isolated area of the Peruvian Amazon. The high seropositivity against T. gondii in humans (83.3% IgG and 6.1% IgM), wild mammals (30.45%, 17 species), peri-domestic rodents (10.0% Rattus sp.), and domestic animals (94.1% dogs and 100% cats) indicates the existence of a sylvatic cycle in the community under study. Individual age

Humming hummingbirds, insect flight tones and a model of animal flight sound.

Why do hummingbirds hum and insects whine when their wings flap in flight? Gutin proposed that a spinning propeller produces tonal sound because the location of the center of aerodynamic pressure on each blade oscillates relative to an external receiver. Animal wings also move, and in addition, aerodynamic force produced by animal wings fluctuates in magnitude and direction over the course of the wingbeat. Here, we modeled animal wing tone as the equal, opposite reaction to aerodynamic forces on the wing, using Lowson's equation for the sound field produced by a moving point force. Two assumpt

The mechanisms of electrical neuromodulation.

The central and peripheral nervous systems are specialized to conduct electrical currents that underlie behaviour. When this multidimensional electrical system is disrupted by degeneration, damage, or disuse, externally applied electrical currents may act to modulate neural structures and provide therapeutic benefit. The administration of electrical stimulation can exert precise and multi-faceted effects at cellular, circuit and systems levels to restore or enhance the functionality of the central nervous system by providing an access route to target specific cells, fibres of passage, neurotra

Novel opportunities for wildlife conservation and research with real-time monitoring.

The expansion of global communication networks and advances in animal-tracking technology make possible the real-time telemetry of positional data as recorded by animal-attached tracking units. When combined with continuous, algorithm-based analytical capability, unique opportunities emerge for applied ecological monitoring and wildlife conservation. We present here four broad approaches for algorithmic wildlife monitoring in real time--proximity, geofencing, movement rate, and immobility--designed to examine aspects of wildlife spatial activity and behavior not possible with conventional trac

Informal Treatment Practices in Ornamental Aquaria: An Overlooked Interface Between Aquatic Animal Health, Antimicrobial Stewardship, and One Health.

Ornamental aquarium keeping collectively involves millions of freshwater, marine, and reef systems in which fish, corals, invertebrates, biofilters, microbial communities, and human husbandry practices are closely interconnected. In these domestic aquatic animal systems, preventive and curative treatments may include antimicrobials, antiparasitics, antiseptics, oxidizing agents, copper-based products, dips, and commercial formulations targeting microbial proliferations or visible system deterioration. Many interventions occur without veterinary diagnosis, microbiological confirmation, standard

Design Considerations, Field Validation and Perspectives of a Low-Power Wearable Sensor Collar for Continuous Monitoring of Ruminants.

Wearable sensors provide significant potential for continuous animal monitoring. However, the practical implementation of such technologies on livestock farms for animal monitoring raises significant challenges related to power efficiency, robustness, and reliability. In this research paper, we propose the design, implementation, and field testing of a low-energy, low-cost, multi-sensor wearable collar specifically designed for continuous monitoring of ruminants using LoRa. The proposed collar is based on a modular hardware platform that incorporates inertial sensing, temperature sensing, and

Frogs, filters, and faraway lands: honoring the inimitable neuroethology of Peter Narins.

This Special Issue of the Journal of Comparative Physiology A continues the journal's tradition of recognizing pioneering neuroethologists by honoring Peter M. Narins. A former Associate Editor of the Journal and an influential colleague to researchers worldwide, Peter has profoundly shaped the field. The 21 papers collected here - authored by collaborators, friends, and former students - highlight how his signature integrative and evolutionary approach to the study of animal communication continues to inspire neuroethological research on anurans and other model species.

Controlling tungiasis in an impoverished community: an intervention study.

BACKGROUND: In Brazil, tungiasis is endemic in some resource-poor communities where various domestic and sylvatic animals act as reservoirs for this zoonosis. To determine the effect of control measures on the prevalence and intensity of infestation of human and animal tungiasis, a repeated cross-sectional survey with intervention was carried out. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In a traditional fishing community in Northeast Brazil, humans and reservoir animals were treated, and premise-spraying using an insecticide was done, while a second fishing community served as a control. Both communi

Valproic acid exposure impairs ultrasonic communication in infant, adolescent and adult rats.

Persistent deficits of social communication are a hallmark of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Communication disabilities can be experimentally modeled using rodents' ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs). Although prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA) is one of the most widely used animal models of ASD, little is known about communication impairments in this model. We performed a longitudinal study to characterize VPA-induced socio-communicative deficits in male and female rats. USVs were recorded in neonatal rats during maternal separation, in adolescent rats during social play, and in adult ra
