Spatial Distribution of Gyrodactylus salmonis (Monogenea) on the Body of Captive Fingerling Oncorhynchus mykiss, Including Attachment Within the Olfactory Chamber.

Gyrodactylus salmonis is a common ectoparasite on the fins and body of North American salmonids in fresh water. In this study, the spatial distribution of G. salmonis on 60 captive hatchery-reared rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss , is reported. The highest parasite densities occurred on 5 × 5-mm(2) sections of the dorsal fin followed by the trunk, other fins, and the olfactory chamber, with the lowest densities on the head. The finding of infections within the olfactory chamber of 93% of the fish was unexpected. One possibility is that such infections represented spillover from high-density

Methylmercury in dried shark fins and shark fin soup from American restaurants.

Consumption of meat from large predatory sharks exposes human consumers to high levels of toxic monomethylmercury (MMHg). There also have been claims that shark fins, and hence the Asian delicacy shark fin soup, contain harmful levels of neurotoxic chemicals in combination with MMHg, although concentrations of MMHg in shark fins are unknown. We measured MMHg in dried, unprocessed fins (n=50) of 13 shark species that occur in the international trade of dried shark fins as well as 50 samples of shark fin soup prepared by restaurants from around the United States. Concentrations of MMHg in fins r

Spatial attachment-site preferences of macroectoparasites on Atlantic sturgeons Acipenser oxyrinchus in Minas Basin, Bay of Fundy, Canada.

Although parasite habitat preference is well studied, it is rarely rigorously evaluated statistically because of many zero intensities. Attachment-site preference and intensities of 2 macroectoparasite species ( Caligus elongatus and Calliobdella vivida ) of Atlantic sturgeon, Acipenser oxyrinchus Mitchill, in Minas Basin, Bay of Fundy, Canada, were characterized with the use of zero-inflated negative binomial statistical models that included a fork-length offset to control for body size. Three other parasites were encountered, sometimes in high numbers on various body sites, but too few count

Exo-rhodopsin: a novel rhodopsin expressed in the zebrafish pineal gland.

The zebrafish, a useful animal model for genetic studies, has a photosensitive pineal gland, which has an endogenous circadian pacemaker entrained to environmental light-dark cycles [G.M. Cahill, Brain Res. 708 (1996) 177-181]. Although pinopsin has been found in the pineal glands of birds and reptiles, the molecular identity responsible for fish pineal photosensitivity remains unclear. This study reports identification of a novel opsin gene expressed in the zebrafish pineal gland. The deduced amino acid sequence is similar to, but not identical (74% identity) with that of canonical rhodopsin

Guizhi Fuling Wan reduces autophagy of granulosa cell in rats with polycystic ovary syndrome via restoring the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Guizhi Fuling Wan (GFW) is a traditional Chinese medicine used to remove blood stasis and dissipate phlegm for treating gynecological diseases that was invented by Zhang Zhongjing in the Eastern Han dynasty. In recent years, GFW has been widely used to treat patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Clinical and animal studies have shown that it is effective in the treatment of PCOS, but its mechanism is unknown. Generally, it works by regulating autophagy via the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study investigated the effects and m

Machine Learning-Based Identification of Hub Genes and Temporal Regulation Mechanisms in Zebrafish Fin Regeneration.

Background/Objectives: Zebrafish fin regeneration serves as a classic model for investigating vertebrate tissue regeneration, yet the core regulatory networks and their crosstalk with the immune microenvironment remain incompletely characterized. This study aimed to identify hub genes, and elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms and immune microenvironment dynamics during zebrafish fin regeneration. Methods: We integrated multiple bulk RNA-seq datasets of zebrafish fin regeneration from the GEO database, followed by data standardization with batch effect removal. Hub genes were screened

First Record of Transversotrema Witenberg, 1944 (Digenea) from the Americas, with Comments on the Taxonomy of Transversotrema patialense (Soparkar, 1924) Crusz and Sathananthan, 1960, and an Updated List of Its Hosts and Geographic Distribution.

Specimens of Transversotrema patialense (sensu lato) ( Soparkar, 1924 ) Crusz and Sathananthan, 1960 (Digenea: Transversotrematidae) infected the skin (epidermal spaces beneath scales near pectoral fins) of 4 of 126 (prevalence 3%; mean intensity 1.8) zebrafish ( Danio rerio (Hamilton, 1822) [Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae]) purchased in 2009 and cultured by a California (USA) fish supplier. These fish were sold as "laboratory-reared" and "specific pathogen free," purportedly raised in a recirculating aquaculture system that included zebrafish only. We herein describe the morphological features of

Description of a new cryptic, shallow-water tonguefish (Pleuronectiformes: Cynoglossidae: Symphurus) from the western North Pacific Ocean.

Combined results based on morphological characters and analyses of partial sequences of the 16s rRNA and coI genes confirm the validity of a new, cryptic, symphurine tonguefish from the western North Pacific Ocean. Symphurus leucochilus n. sp., a diminutive species reaching sizes to c. 67 mm standard length, is described from nine specimens that were collected from fish-landing ports and from trawls made at c. 150 m off Taiwan and Japan. Symphurus leucochilus shares many similar features with those of Symphurus microrhynchus and that of several undescribed species that are morphologically simi

Osteonecrosis in pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus).

Bone lesions, particularly osteonecrosis, have been rarely described in cetaceans, with limited studies correlating imaging, gross and microscopic findings. Aseptic osteonecrosis is especially relevant as a chronic form of decompression sickness, well-documented in human divers but controversially reported in cetaceans. This study examined the humeral heads of five stranded short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) using computed tomography (CT) and plastic embedding histologic techniques. Three specimens exhibited CT-detectable lesions, while two did not. CT imaging revealed dist

Rapid wound healing in a reef manta ray masks the extent of vessel strike.

Increasing vessel traffic in the marine environment due to commercial and recreational activities has amplified the number of conflicts with marine animals. However, there are limited multi-year observations of the healing rate of marine animals following vessel strike. Here we document the healing rate of a reef manta ray Mobula alfredi, following lacerations caused by a propeller along the pectoral fin. We demonstrate a high healing capacity, with wound length following a negative exponential curve over time. Lacerations healed to 5% of the initial wound length (i.e. 95% closure) within 295

Evolution of Shh endoderm enhancers during morphological transition from ventral lungs to dorsal gas bladder.

Shh signalling plays a crucial role for endoderm development. A Shh endoderm enhancer, MACS1, is well conserved across terrestrial animals with lungs. Here, we first show that eliminating mouse MACS1 causes severe defects in laryngeal development, indicating that MACS1-directed Shh signalling is indispensable for respiratory organogenesis. Extensive phylogenetic analyses revealed that MACS1 emerged prior to the divergence of cartilaginous and bony fishes, and even euteleost fishes have a MACS1 orthologue. Meanwhile, ray-finned fishes evolved a novel conserved non-coding sequence in the neighbo

Developmental mechanisms of vertebrate limb evolution.

Over the past few years, our understanding of the evolution of limbs has been improved by important new discoveries in the fossil record. Additionally, rapid progress has been made in identifying the molecular basis of vertebrate limb development. It is now possible to integrate these two areas of research in order to identify the molecular developmental mechanisms underlying the evolution of paired appendages in vertebrates. After the origin of paired appendages, several vertebrate lineages reduced or eliminated fins and limbs and returned to the limbless condition. Examples include eels, cae

The use of a shotgun for euthanasia of stranded cetaceans.

A 12-gauge shotgun, loaded with either a solid 28 g lead slug or buckshot consisting of nine individual lead pellets with a total mass of 28 g, was used to shoot the heads of one dead common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) and five dead long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melaena) varying in length from 2.5 m to 5 m. The dolphin and the smallest pilot whale were shot with both projectiles from the dorsal surface of the head. The projectiles penetrated the head and dorsal surface of the skull, but not the base of the cranium. This site using buckshot was not effective in the larger animals. Two

Anatomy and evolution of heterocercal tail in lamniform sharks.

Lamniformes is a small shark group consisting of 15 extant species with remarkably diverse lifestyles and a wide range in heterocercal tail morphology. The caudal fin morphology must be related to their lifestyle because the tail is a main locomotive structure in sharks, but such relationships have remained largely uninvestigated. Here, the morphology-lifestyle relationship in lamniforms is examined through phylogenetic mapping. This study suggests that, within Lamniformes, caudal fins with a more horizontally directed curvature of the vertebral column are plesiomorphic, whereas those with a l

Comparison of Sampling and Detection Methods for Chinook Salmon and Steelhead Naturally Infected with Myxobolus cerebralis.

Myxobolus cerebralis (Mc) is a myxozoan parasite causing whirling disease in hatchery- and natural-origin salmonids. To minimize spread of this parasite and the incidence of its associated disease, fish health professionals routinely screen fish for Mc before stocking or moving the fish to Mc-free waters. Sample collection for Mc traditionally entails lethal sampling of cranial tissue followed by pepsin-trypsin digest (PTD) and screening of the sample for mature myxobolid myxospores (PTD method); however, nonlethal sampling methods would be advantageous in some circumstances, such as when deal

Zooplankton as a Bioindicator of Marine Contamination for Filter-Feeding Basking Sharks, Fin Whales and Devil Rays at Caprera Canyon (Mediterranean Sea).

The Canyon of Caprera (Mediterranean Sea) hosts high biodiversity, including threatened filter-feeding vertebrates such as the basking shark and fin whale. Due to their elusive nature, mobility and conservation status, direct contaminant assessment in these species is often challenging. To address this limitation, the present study focuses on zooplankton, an essential prey and bioindicator, to indirectly assess the levels of persistent organic pollutants and trace elements (TEs) in their feeding grounds. This approach provides a noninvasive method to estimate potential pollutant exposure in vu

Deep breath out: molecular survey of selected pathogens in blow and skin biopsies from North Atlantic cetaceans.

BACKGROUND: Cetacean morbillivirus, herpesvirus, avian influenza virus (AIV) and Brucella spp. have been linked to numerous cetacean strandings in the Northeast (NE) Atlantic. Yet, their prevalence in free-living cetaceans remains insufficiently investigated, particularly in northern regions. METHODS: Between 2016 and 2025, humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and, opportunistically, fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) and a long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas), were sampled in two foraging grounds in northern Norway (Skjervøy and Andenes), in

Virus-associated papillomatous skin lesions in a giant guitarfish Rhynchobatus djiddensis: a case report.

Although elasmobranch species are increasingly displayed in public aquaria, knowledge of disease in wild and captive elasmobranchs, as well as the agents involved, remains limited, and descriptions are often incomplete. This report describes papillomatous skin lesions in a juvenile giant guitarfish Rhynchobatus djiddensis associated with intranuclear viral particles. Skin biopsies were collected from multiple, friable, raised, villonodular skin lesions affecting pigmented and non-pigmented skin of the caudal fin and ventrum, respectively. Microscopic examination revealed papillary proliferatio

Forensic Species Identification: A Case Involving Trafficked Fish Maws and Shark Fins.

Illegal wildlife trade and other forms of wildlife crime pose significant threats to global biodiversity. Accurate species identification of wildlife products is crucial for effectively combating illegal wildlife trade. In recent years, forensic species identification using molecular methods has gained increasing attention. Here, we report a case involving 1777 trafficked fish maws and 18,170 trafficked shark fins. We employed DNA barcoding for forensic species identification and a large-sample inference strategy for population estimation. A total of 325 samples (197 fish maws and 128 shark fi
