Though soft tissue disorders have been recognized and described to some detail in several types of domestic animals and small mammals for some years, they remain uncommon. Because of their low prevalence, not much progress has been made not only in improved diagnosis but also in our understanding of the biochemical basis and pathogenesis of these diseases in animals. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) described in dogs already in 1943 and later in cats has only minor impact on the well-being of the dog as its effects on skin of these animals are rather limited. The involved skin is thin and hyperext

Dermatophytosis, a zoonotic disease, is caused by fungi of three main genera, namely, Micropsorum, Trichophyton, and Epidermophyton. Specific lesions of dermatophyte infections are localized in the face, legs, and/or tail. Skin lesions in infected animals demonstrate localized alopecia, erythema, and crust, which are more commonly known as ringworm. Factors that affect dermatophytosis include the dermatophyte species; virulence factors of the agent; and the immune status, age, and sex of the host. High levels of cortisol and pro-inflammatory cytokines have also been reported to play an importa

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), a disease caused by tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), represents a serious neural infection of humans in Europe and Asia. The main reservoir hosts of TBEV are ticks, rodents and insectivores, but domestic animals may also be infected with the virus. This review summarizes what is known about TBE in domestic species (e.g., dogs, horses), in which infection may manifest with clinical signs similar to those seen in severe human cases. We also focus on TBE in ruminants where TBE infections are typically asymptomatic and do not cause health problems in the infecte

Norovirus is the most common cause of non-bacterial gastroenteritis and is a burden worldwide. The increasing norovirus diversity is currently categorized into at least 10 genogroups which are further classified into more than 40 genotypes. In addition to humans, norovirus can infect a broad range of hosts including livestock, pets, and wild animals, e.g., marine mammals and bats. Little is known about norovirus infections in most non-human hosts, but the close genetic relatedness between some animal and human noroviruses coupled with lack of understanding where newly appearing human norovirus

This article focuses on the 3 most commonly used rodenticide types: anticoagulants, bromethalin, and cholecalciferol. It is important to verify the active ingredient in any rodenticide exposure. Many owners use the term D-con to refer to any rodenticide regardless of the brand or type of rodenticide. The Environmental Protection Agency released their final ruling on rodenticide risk mitigation measures in 2008 and all products sold had to be compliant by June 2011, changing to consumer products containing either first-generation anticoagulants or nonanticoagulants, including bromethalin and ch

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The goal of this review is to highlight some of the considerations involved in creating animal models to study rare bone diseases and then to compare and contrast approaches to creating such models, focusing on the advantages and novel opportunities offered by the CRISPR-Cas system.
RECENT FINDINGS: Gene editing after creation of double-stranded breaks in chromosomal DNA is increasingly being used to modify animal genomes. Multiple tools can be used to create such breaks, with the newest ones being based on the bacterial adaptive immune system known as CRISPR/Cas. Advances

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a hereditary mechanobullous disease of animals and humans, characterized by an extreme fragility of the skin and mucous membranes. The main feature of EB in humans and animals is the formation of blisters and erosions in response to minor mechanical trauma. Epidermolysis bullosa is caused by mutations in the genes that code for structural proteins of the cytoskeleton of the basal keratinocytes or of the basement membrane zone. Based on the ultrastructural levels of tissue separation, EB is divided into the following three broad categories: epidermolysis bullosa si

Arthrodesis is an elective surgical procedure designed to eliminate articular pain and dysfunction by deliberate osseous fusion. A percutaneous approach can be used to perform tarsal and carpal arthrodeses in dogs and cats. Intraoperative imaging facilitates cartilage debridement performed with a burr inserted through stab incisions. The plate is introduced through an epiperiosteal tunnel and secured with screws inserted through the skin insertion incisions. Additional screws can be placed through separate stab incisions. The primary advantage of this technique is a decreased risk of soft tiss

We retrospectively estimated the incidence of culture-proven melioidosis in animals in Thailand during 2006-2010. The highest incidence was in goats (1.63/100,000/year), followed by incidence in pigs and cattle. The estimated incidence of melioidosis in humans in a given region paralleled that of melioidosis in goats.

Dipteran larvae were collected from wounds of 78 domestic animals. The larvae were identified as follows: Wohlfahrtia magnifica, taken from dogs (the majority), goats, sheep, camels, horses and one cat; Lucilia sericata, from cats, sheep, one horse, and one dog together with Chrysomya albiceps; Przhevalskiana silenus from goats and Musca domestica from one sheep. The animals were treated with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents and insecticides and most animals fully recovered. We believe this to be the first record of L. sericata and C. albiceps taken together from a dog. Likewise, the pres

Heartworm disease due to Dirofilaria immitis continues to cause severe disease and even death in dogs and other animals in many parts of the world, even though safe, highly effective and convenient preventatives have been available for the past two decades. Moreover, the parasite and vector mosquitoes continue to spread into areas where they have not been reported previously. Heartworm societies have been established in the USA and Japan and the First European Dirofilaria Days (FEDD) Conference was held in Zagreb, Croatia, in February of 2007. These organizations promote awareness, encourage r

Motor vehicle collisions MVC with large animals are a worldwide problem. In this review, we aim to analyze the mechanisms and patterns of human injuries caused by MVC with large animals and various ways to prevent them. Reported studies on large animals that can cause such accidents include the moose, camels, deer, and kangaroos. The moose causes a typical rear-and downward deformity of the roof of the car. The camel falls on the roof of the car causing cervical and head injury to the occupants. Injuries caused by kangaroos and deer are usually mild. Injuries may be caused by direct collision

Monocrotaline (MCT) is a pyrrolizidine alkaloid extracted from seeds of Crotalaria spectabilis that has been used to induce structural changes in the pulmonary arteries associated with progressive pulmonary hypertension in rodents. Recent studies have demonstrated that several mediators such as elastase, vasoconstrictors (Endotheline-1), vasodilators (Nitric oxide, PGI2) and cytokines (IL-1, MCP-1) play important roles in MCT-induced pulmonary hypertension, and that the changes in pulmonary hemodynamics are required for neointimal formation in pulmonary arteries. We have recently provided the

This article reviews the functional studies that have been carried out on transgenic and knockout animals that are relevant to Alzheimer's disease (AD). The discussion focuses upon the functional characterisation of these strains, particularly upon factors that affect synaptic processes that are thought to contribute to memory formation, including hippocampal long-term potentiation. We examine the use of transgenes associated with amyloid precursor protein and presenilin-1, their mutations linked to early onset familial AD, and the recent attempts to establish double transgenic strains that ha

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder of the brain accounting for about 50-70% of the typical late onset cases of dementia. The pathological and diagnostic hallmarks of the disease are principally the presence of extracellular deposits called neuritic amyloid plaques and the intracellular aggregation of neurofibrillary tangles. In addition selective neuronal cell loss accompanied by cerebrovascular amyloidosis is detectable. In the case of familial AD, defects in at least three different genes (APP, PS1, PS2) leading to indistinguishable pathology are now well defined. There

Spongiform encephalopathies include several diseases of animals and humans: sheep and goat scrapie, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in humans and its new variant (vCJD). Common characteristics of these diseases are long-term incubation, slow and progressive course, spongiform changes within nerve tissue, neuron loss and astrocytosis. Causative agent responsible for spongiform encephalopathy is prion (PrPsc) and it represents a posttranslationally modified host protein (PrPc) which normally exists and is produced in the cells. Development of certain disea
