Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) and tickborne pathogens (Rickettsiales) associated with hosts at Zoo Miami.

Incidence of tickborne diseases is increasing in the United States, with nearly half a million cases estimated to occur annually. The rising burden of tickborne disease in the United States underscores the need to investigate the presence and prevalence of tick species and associated pathogens. Southern Florida serves as an introductory point for non-native invasive reptiles, amphibians, and ectoparasites due to the region's international ports and tropical climate. At Zoo Miami, visitors are near exhibit animals and free-living invasive species, including cane toads and green iguanas. This st

Sudden death of a Siamese crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis) due to systemic aspergillosis.

A 4-year-old female Siamese crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis) housed at a zoo died without any prior clinical signs. During necropsy, numerous scattered, well-demarcated, yellowish-white, firm nodules were observed throughout the liver and lungs. Microscopic examination with periodic acid-Schiff staining revealed granulomatous inflammation in the liver and lungs. Liver granulomas were characterized by the presence of a connective tissue barrier and hyphae, and the centers of the granulomas showed signs of necrosis. Lung samples showed characteristics similar to those observed in the liver sampl

Retrospective analysis of clustered neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases in captive lions in the early 1970s.

Rustrela virus (RusV), a recently discovered pathogen for domestic and wildlife animals, was identified as the causative agent of meningoencephalomyelitis in domestic cats and various zoo animals including lions. To analyze a past outbreak of increased mortality in lions and to reveal its possible etiological relationship with an RusV infection, this retrospective study re-evaluates 20 cases of lions originating from a zoo in Western Germany using archived formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues. Animals with different neurologic signs were submitted for necropsy between December 1970

Detection of Cryptosporidium muris type oocysts from beef cattle in a farm and from domestic and wild animals in and around the farm.

Cryptosporidium muris type oocysts were detected from 21 of 516 beef cattle in a farm. Then we surveyed Cryptosporidium oocysts in 348 beef and dairy cattle, 500 pigs, 101 dogs, 38 wild animals and 11 zoo-kept animals in and around the farm. Oocysts were detected from only 2 of 25 Japanese field mice, Apodemus speciosus in the same farm. Gene analysis suggested that the oocysts were different from the C. muris type bovine isolate.

Detection of SARS-CoV-2 Delta Variant (B.1.617.2) in Domestic Dogs and Zoo Tigers in England and Jersey during 2021.

Reverse zoonotic transmission events of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) have been described since the start of the pandemic, and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) designated the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in animals a reportable disease. Eighteen domestic and zoo animals in Great Britain and Jersey were tested by APHA for SARS-CoV-2 during 2020-2023. One domestic cat (Felis catus), three domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris), and three Amur tigers (Panthera tigris altaica) from a zoo were confirmed positive during 2020-2021 and reported to the WOAH. Effects of guest feeding programs on captive giraffe behavior.

Zoological institutions develop human-animal interaction opportunities for visitors to advance missions of conservation, education, and recreation; however, the animal welfare implications largely have yet to be evaluated. This behavioral study was the first to quantify impacts of guest feeding programs on captive giraffe behavior and welfare, by documenting giraffe time budgets that included both normal and stereotypic behaviors. Thirty giraffes from nine zoos (six zoos with varying guest feeding programs and three without) were observed using both instantaneous scan sampling and continuous b

On secondary hyperparathyroidism in orang-utans, Pongo satyrus (Linnaeus, 1758).

Orang-utan crania with alterations in bone structure which could be determined morphologically were studied and evaluated. The alterations in bone structure were referred to in the literature up to about 1939 as "rickets"; when vitamin D was given to the animals, the alterations diminished, until they were almost unnoticeable. From about 1941/52, the alterations were diagnosed as "Morbus Paget". Research on orang-utan crania has become possible through comparison of a larger number of single symptoms, occurring in a number of individuals. Out of a larger sample, the study was carried out on 5

Consistency of captive giraffe behavior under two different management regimes.

Long-term animal behavior studies are sometimes conducted at a single site, leading to questions about whether effects are limited to animals in the same environment. Our ability to make general conclusions about behavior is improved when we can identify behaviors that are consistent across a range of environments. To extend Veasey and colleagues' ([1996b] Anim Welf 5:139-153) study, I compared not only activity budgets but also social behavior of an all-female group of giraffe at The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore (MZiB) to those previously observed in breeding groups at The San Diego Zoo's Wild A

Serological survey of Toxoplasma gondii in captive nonhuman primates in zoos in Spain.

Toxoplasma gondii is a widely distributed zoonotic protozoan parasite, which can affect most warm-blooded species. Some species of non-human primates (NHPs) are highly susceptible to T. gondii infection. The aim of the study was to determine the seroprevalence and risk factors associated with T. gondii infection in NHPs housed in zoos in Spain. Sera from 189 NHPs belonging to 33 species were collected in eight zoos. Additionally, 10 of the 189 animals were longitudinally sampled. Anti-T. gondii antibodies were detected in 48 NHPs (25.4%; confidence interval of 95% (CI95%): 19.2-31.6) using a m

First report of Thelazia callipaeda Railliet & Henry, 1910 in a zoo lion (Panthera leo) (Linnaeus, 1758) from Romania.

Thelazia callipaeda, the zoonotic "oriental eye worm", is an emerging nematode known to infect a wide range of hosts, particularly carnivores (wild and domestic canids and felids, mustelids, and ursids), but also other mammal groups (suids, lagomorphs, monkeys, and humans), across a wide geographical area. New host-parasite associations and human cases have mostly been reported in endemic areas. A less studied group of hosts is represented by zoo animals that may harbor T. callipaeda.A 23-year old male lion (Panthera leo) that was born in a public zoo in Reșița (Caraș-Severin County, Romania)

Characterization of Culicoides and mosquito fauna at the National Zoological Garden of Rabat, Morocco.

Zoos are considering to be essential places for the conservation of wild animal species. It is essential to prevent their infection by pathogens especially for those belonging to threatened or extinct species. Zoo captive animals are susceptible to several Culicoides and mosquito borne-viruses. In order to further evaluate the risk of pathogen transmission in zoos, it is essential to identify the presence of potential vector species, as well as the animals bitten by those vectors. For this purpose, Culicoides and mosquito species composition was investigated in ten sites from March to June 202

Complete genomic sequencing and characterization of an ESBL-producing Escherichia coli , sequence type 8211, isolated from the fecal material of an Eastern Bongo.

The Eastern Bongo ( Tragelaphus eurycerus isaaci ) is a critically endangered species in the wild. In zoos, animals are common carriers of Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase (ESBL) producing bacteria. The purpose of this study was to determine if the fecal material of an Eastern Bongo from the Great Plains Zoo contained ESBL producing Enterobacteriaceae . Bacteria from this animal were inoculated onto HardyCHROM™ ESBL agar. Isolates with a pink colored colony were subject to whole-genome sequencing. One isolate was identified as Escherichia coli using PubMLST. A putative conjugative plasmid cont

Lethal Encephalitis in Seals with Japanese Encephalitis Virus Infection, China, 2017.

We isolated Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) from brain samples of 2 seals with lethal encephalitis at Weihai Aquarium, Weihai, China, in 2017. We confirmed our findings by immunohistochemical staining and electron microscopy. Phylogenetic analysis showed this virus was genotype I. Our findings suggest that JEV might disseminate though infected zoo animals.

Reproductive health surveillance in zoo and wildlife medicine.

For over 25 years, the Reproductive Health Surveillance Program has collected, processed, evaluated, and archived reproductive tracts from nondomestic mammals submitted by zoos. The analysis of the data from this archive has been used to recognize lesions associated with exposure to certain contraceptives; but arguably more importantly, to also document naturally occurring lesions. The goals of this program are to enhance the reproductive management of captive and free-ranging species by providing information about the effects of various contraceptives and to provide basic information regardin

Body condition scoring system for greater one-horned rhino (Rhinoceros unicornis): Development and application.

Preventing obesity in zoo animals is increasingly recognized as an important husbandry objective. To achieve this goal, body condition scoring (BCS) systems are available for an ever-increasing number of species. Here, we present a BCS for the greater one-horned rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) based on an evaluation (on a scale from 1 to 5) of seven different body regions, and report resulting scores for 62 animals from 27 facilities, based on digital photographs. In animals above 4 years of age, this BCS correlated with the body mass:shoulder height ratio. Although differences between the s

A pilot study on dietary and faecal calcium/phosphorus ratios in different types of captive ruminating herbivores.

Quantitative differences in calcium and phosphorus metabolism between domestic species exist and can be visualised using data on calcium and phosphorus intake and faecal excretion. The parameter for analysing the results was defined as Δ = dietary calcium/phosphorus (Ca/P) ratio - faecal Ca/P ratio. In previous studies, hindgut fermenters had significantly higher Δ values than ruminants (sheep, cattle, goats), which was explained by the high calcium digestibilities in hindgut fermenters in contrast to highly efficient phosphorus recycling in ruminants. The first hypothesis of the present study
