In nanoscale structures with rotational symmetry, such as quantum rings, the orbital motion of electrons combined with a spin-orbit interaction can produce a very strong and anisotropic Zeeman effect. Since symmetry is sensitive to electric fields, ring-like geometries provide an opportunity to manipulate magnetic properties over an exceptionally wide range. In this work, we show that it is possible to form rotationally symmetric confinement potentials inside a semiconductor quantum dot, resulting in electron orbitals with large orbital angular momentum and strong spin-orbit interactions. The collagen network is the highly organized backbone of articular cartilage providing tissue tensile stiffness and restricting proteoglycan bleaching out of the tissue. Osteoarthritis (OA) diminishes proper collagen network adaptation. Our aim was to provide quantitative three-dimensional (3D) information of the cartilage collagen network adaptation in early osteoarthritis using high resolution micro-computed tomography (µCT)-imaging. Osteochondral samples from the femoral condyles were collected from healthy (N = 8, both legs) and experimental OA rabbit model with anterior cruciate ligament

In the family of 2D materials, atomically thin magnetic systems are relatively new and highly exploitable. Understanding the spin symmetry in such materials has opened a new path toward controlling the magnetic texture. In this study, we have shown that the plethora of different interface formations in the Janus or pure metal-semiconductor-based van der Waals heterostructures 1T-VXY (X, Y = S, Se, Te)-Cr2A3B3 (A, B = I, Cl, Br) allows us to explore and modify the spin-orbit and ligand-metal interactions to fine-tune magnetic anisotropy and different spin symmetries in these systems. We have ut

Our knowledge of subsurface structures often derives from seismic velocities that are measured during seismic acquisition surveys. These velocities can greatly change due to lithological, fracture frequencies and/or effective pressure/temperature variations. However, the influence of such intrinsic lithological properties and environmental conditions at the large scale is poorly understood due to the lack of comprehensive datasets. Here, we analyze 43 borehole-derived velocity datasets of 3 end-member tight carbonate sequences from Central Italy, including massive pure limestone (Calcare Massi

We report a remarkable anisotropy in the dielectric properties of water under cylindrical nanoconfinements in carbon nanotubes (CNTs). We employ linear response theory and use a new relation to define and calculate the two distinct eigenvalues of the dielectric tensor, namely, the axial (εz) and perpendicular (εx/y) components. We discover that not just the dielectric tensor but dielectric relaxation also exhibits strong anisotropy. The present study reveals that the parallel (εz) and the orthogonal (εx/y) components approach the bulk value in an opposite manner when the diameter of the CNT is

Optically assisted electrical generation of umbilic defects, arising in homeotropically aligned nematic liquid crystal cells and known as topological templates for the generation of optical vortices, are reported in nematic liquid crystals with positive dielectric anisotropy in detail. It is shown that nematic liquid crystals with positive dielectric anisotropy can serve as a stable and efficient medium for the optical vortex generation from both linearly and circularly polarized input Gaussian beams. Hybrid cells made from a thin layer of nematic liquid crystal confined between a photorespons

Metal-organic frameworks are promising materials for energy-efficient gas separations, but little is known about the diffusion of adsorbates in materials featuring one-dimensional porosity at the nanoscale. An understanding of the interplay between framework structure and gas diffusion is crucial for the practical application of these materials as adsorbents or in mixed-matrix membranes, since the rate of gas diffusion within the adsorbent pores impacts the required size (and therefore cost) of the adsorbent column or membrane. Here, we investigate the diffusion of CO2 within the pores of Zn2(

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Fractional anisotropy (FA) is a useful measure of connectivity in the brain that can be derived from the diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) dataset. This study investigated the relationship between FA and selected measures of cognition across a broad age group to explore a possible structural basis for cognitive changes with age.
METHODS: FA images were generated from DTI data acquired at 1.5T in 87 healthy subjects (age range, 20-73 years). Relationships between a range of cognitive measures and FA were explored using regional and voxel-based analysis.
RESULTS: Age and r

The photophysical properties of three dendrimers containing a p-terphenyl core with appended sulfonimide branches of different size and n-octyl chains have been investigated in dichloromethane solution. In the dendrimer absorption spectra contributions from both the branches and the core are clearly identified. The fluorescence spectra show only the characteristic fluorescence of the terphenyl unit. Energy transfer from the appended chromophoric groups to the core does not occur. In the dendrimers, the terphenyl core exhibits a very high fluorescence quantum yield (ca. 0.75) and a short emissi

Antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials offer ultrafast spin dynamics, negligible stray fields, and robustness against magnetic perturbations, yet their vanishing net magnetization renders optical detection and control of the Néel vector fundamentally challenging. Here, we demonstrate pump-polarization-written optical and magneto-optical (MO) anisotropy in the Kagome AFM FeSn by using pump-probe ultrafast spectroscopy. The experimental findings reveal that the principal axes of both optical and MO anisotropies are dictated exclusively by the pump polarization but remain insensitive to sample rotatio

Anisotropic intralayer covalent bonds and interlayer van der Waals gaps of layered materials enable preferred epitaxial horizontal growth rather than vertically aligned and other orientational growth, thus hindering the systematic investigations of electrical properties for thermodynamically unstable crystallographic planes. Here, we achieve three different types of exposed crystallographic planes for layered CoTe2 nanostructures, by the fine-tuning of the elementary steps including nucleation and kinetic epitaxial growth processes, which could dramatically change traditional horizontal growth

Data-centric technologies demand energy-efficient, densely integrable spintronic building blocks, motivating the search for two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets combining room-temperature Curie temperatures (TC) and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). Compared with halides and chalcogenides, transition-metal nitrides (TMN2) feature short metal-nitrogen bonds and strong p-d hybridization, which can substantially reshape crystal-field splitting and magnetic exchange pathways. Through systematic first-principles screening of hexagonal h-TMN2 (TM = 3,4,5d) monolayers, we identify h-VN2 and h-CrN

Mucus transport is essential for lung health, as ciliated cells constantly propel mucus outward to clear bacteria, viruses, and particles. This defense relies on a material that must be elastic enough to maintain ciliary traction, but capable of reorganizing under sustained directional loading. How the mucin network reconciles these demands, and whether it retains a memory of the stresses it experiences, remains poorly understood. Here we show that lung mucus develops a persistent, direction-dependent mechanical asymmetry under physiologically relevant stress-a mechanical memory encoded in the

Magnetite Fe3O4 nanoparticles are widely regarded as a prototypical ferrimagnetic spinel system; however, their magnetic response at the nanoscale increasingly reflects a non-ideal regime where exchange interactions, structural disorder, and surface-driven effects coexist in a strongly coupled manner. In this work, we investigate Fe3-x Lu x O4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) nanoparticles to elucidate how non-magnetic rare-earth substitution modifies this coupled magnetostructural landscape. Using a combination of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, and magnetization measurements,

Mechanical forces play crucial roles in morphogenesis and function, yet individual cells often respond differently to the same external force. Strain heterogeneity, the non-uniform deformation of cells under uniform external mechanical stimuli, may underlie tissue-level robustness and guide morphogenetic outcomes. In this study, we applied a defined uniaxial strain to Xenopus laevis embryonic epithelial explants and investigated how strain was distributed at the single cell level. Our quantitative analysis revealed that cellular strain was heterogeneous, suggesting variable responses to a unif

The miniaturization of photonic circuits is impeded by the difficulty of combining active nonlinear frequency conversion with passive subdiffractional light guiding. Here, we establish a rhombohedral 3R-polytype of MoS2 (3R-MoS2) as a multifunctional platform resolving this challenge. Unlike its centrosymmetric 2H counterpart, 3R-MoS2 preserves broken inversion symmetry in the bulk, enabling scalable second-order nonlinearity. Challenging the assumption of identical linear properties between polytypes, we reveal that 3R-MoS2 not only possesses a giant optical anisotropy similar to 2H, but also

Thin-film plasmonic supercrystals of pentagonal gold nanobipyramids (AuBP) exhibit a diverse range of packing structures that influence the near-field distribution of the enhanced electric field and the far-field response. By varying the molecular weight of the coating ligands, the softness of the anisotropic building blocks is changed. A thorough structural characterization reveals that this affects the resulting superstructures from self-assembly more intricately than with isotropic building blocks. Softer coatings lead to smaller aligned domains in monolayers, while bilayers exhibit more cr

OBJECTIVES: To discuss challenges in assessing hepatic steatosis using ultrasound hepatorenal index (HRI).
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed HRI and liver magnetic resonance imaging-based proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) in 134 adult participants (53 men and 81 women, mean age 55 years). The diagnostic performance of HRI for determining hepatic steatosis was tested by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) using liver MRI-PDFF as the reference. Regression plots were employed to compare the sampling sites in liver and kidney that were used to calculate HRIs

1D charge transport offers great insight into strongly correlated physics, such as Luttinger liquids, electronic instabilities, and superconductivity. Although 1D charge transport is observed in nanomaterials and quantum wires, examples in bulk crystalline solids remain elusive. In this work, it is demonstrated that spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can act as a mechanism to induce quasi-1D charge transport in the Ln3MPn5 (Ln = lanthanide; M = transition metal; Pn = Pnictide) family. From three example compounds, La3ZrSb5, La3ZrBi5, and Sm3ZrBi5, density functional theory calculations with SOC include

Magnetic nanoparticles are indispensable in many biomedical applications, but it remains unclear how the composition and structure will influence the application specific performance. We consider two compositions, ferrite and cobalt ferrite, synthesized under conditions that create aggregated multi-core nanoparticles, called nanoflowers. Each nanoflower has an ionic surfactant or dextran to provide colloid stability in water. The composition, but not the coating, greatly impacts the heating output and the magnetic particle imaging tracer quality (with cobalt ferrite significantly reduced compa
