Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis of Ankle Joint - A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Neglected elbow dislocation is defined as a dislocation that is present for 3 weeks or longer. There is no available literature on neglected elbow dislocations, leading to ankylosis of the elbow joint. CASE REPORT: A 17-year-old female sustained a road traffic accident. Anteroposterior and lateral view radiographs of the forearm were done and deemed to be normal at another hospital. Six months after the injury, she presented to us with complaints of absent elbow movements. Examination revealed the elbow to be fixed in 30° of flexion. Radiographs of the elbow revealed an ankylosi

Development of a New Ankle Joint Hybrid Assistive Limb.

Foot and ankle disabilities (foot drop) due to common peroneal nerve palsy and stroke negatively affect patients' ambulation and activities of daily living. We developed a novel robotics ankle hybrid assistive limb (HAL) for patients with foot drop due to common peroneal nerve palsy or stroke. The ankle HAL is a wearable exoskeleton-type robot that is used to train plantar and dorsiflexion and for voluntary assistive training of the ankle joint of patients with palsy using an actuator, which is placed on the lateral side of the ankle joint and detects bioelectrical signals from the tibialis an

Bone alterations are associated with ankle osteoarthritis joint pain.

The etiology of ankle osteoarthritis (OA) is largely unknown. We analyzed 24 ankle OA of 21 patients diagnosed by plain radiographs using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Ankle joint pain disappeared in 22 out of 24 joints by conservative treatment. MRI bone signal changes in and around the ankle joints were observed in 22 of 24 joints. Bone signal changes along the joint line were seen in 10 of 11 joints as a Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grade of II to IV. Such signal changes were witnessed in only 4 of 13 joints with KL grade 0 or I. In the talocrural joint, bone alterations occurred in both tibi

Relationship between mechanical ankle joint laxity and subjective function.

BACKGROUND: An increase in ankle joint laxity has been reported in patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI). However, it is not known if this increase in joint laxity is responsible for the subjective level of functional deficits also reported in these patients. METHODS: One hundred twenty subjects with unilateral CAI (55 males, 65 females; age, 20.6 ± 1.5 years; mass, 74.5 ± 13.6 kg; height, 174.2 ± 9.7 cm) participated in the study. Mechanical joint stability was measured with an instrumented ankle arthrometer. The arthrometer measured ankle joint motion for anterior/posterior translat

Ankle bracing and the neuromuscular factors influencing joint stiffness.

CONTEXT: Health care professionals commonly prescribe external stabilization to decrease the incidence and severity of ankle sprains. The mechanism for this decrease is not clearly understood. Examining the effects of ankle bracing on biomechanical stability and influencing factors may provide important information regarding the neuromuscular effects of bracing. OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of 2 different ankle braces on the neuromuscular factors influencing ankle stiffness. DESIGN: Mixed-model repeated-measures design. SETTING: Research laboratory. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: Twent

[The childhood ankle joint. Deformities, abnormalities and clinical variations].

The ankle joint unites high functionality with high load on a small surface. Congenital as well as acquired variations lead to a derangement of the complex concerted action of tendons, ligaments and joints. This causes dysfunction and the development of typical deformities. It is necessary to discriminate physiological variants, congenital, posttraumatic and tumoral variations for the differential diagnosis. In most instances this is only possible with the aid of radiological clarification. Congenital malformations in the region of the upper and lower ankle joint are generally rare. One diseas

Ankle taping can reduce external ankle joint moments during drop landings on a tilted surface.

Ankle taping is commonly used to prevent ankle sprains. However, kinematic assessments investigating the biomechanical effects of ankle taping have provided inconclusive results. This study aimed to determine the effect of ankle taping on the external ankle joint moments during a drop landing on a tilted surface at 25°. Twenty-five participants performed landings on a tilted force platform that caused ankle inversion with and without ankle taping. Landing kinematics were captured using a motion capture system. External ankle inversion moment, the angular impulse due to the medio-lateral and ve

Effects of footwear on lead limb knee and ankle joint kinematics in a fast bowler with a history of posterior ankle joint impingement-a case report.

This case study reports the kinematic effect of 2 different cricket shoes on a fast bowler who reports a history of posterior ankle joint impingement. The participant bowled 6 trials in 2 pairs of cricket shoes. The 3-dimensional kinematics of the joints of the front leg was quantified during stance phase of the delivery stride. Wearing the high-cut shoe resulted in the ankle being 7.7-degree angle more plantarflexed at initial contact compared with the low-cut shoe. Again, when wearing the high-cut shoe compared with the low-cut shoe, the ankle joint was 15.5-degree angle more adducted and th

New concepts in the treatment of ankle joint fractures. The IP-XS (XSL) and IP-XXS (XXSL) nail in the treatment of ankle joint fractures.

INTRODUCTION: The most important factor in the treatment of ankle joint fractures is stable anatomical reconstruction of the syndesmosis and joint surface. In the course of this, attention must be paid to soft-tissue damage with the risk of deep infections. Early functional therapy and exercise tolerance must be called for. The choice of surgical access route, in particular in the case of critical arterial circulation, and the possible irritation of the soft tissue by the osteosynthesis material prompted us to seek alternative osteosynthesis techniques. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Following a precl

A Mouse Model of Ankle-Subtalar Complex Joint Instability.

Ankle sprains are perhaps the most common sports injuries in daily life, often resulting in instability of the ankle-subtalar complex joint (ASCJ), and can eventually lead to post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) in the long term. However, due to the complexity of the injury mechanism and the clinical manifestations, such as ecchymosis, hematoma, or tenderness in the lateral foot, there is no clinical consensus on diagnosing and treating ASCJ instability. Since the musculoskeletal structure of the bones and ligaments of the mouse hindfoot is comparable to that of humans, an animal model of ASCJ

Management of varus ankle osteoarthritis with joint-preserving osteotomy.

The goal of osteotomy in the treatment of varus ankle arthritis is to shift the forces imparted to the ankle to a portion of the joint that is not involved in the degenerative process. The redistribution of loads and stresses seen by the tibiotalar joint can be approached either above or below the ankle with an osteotomy of the tibia or calcaneus. Evaluation of the deformity as being subtalar, supramalleolar, or a combination allows the surgeon to best address the increased joint stresses, thereby reducing the risk of failure of the osteotomy.

Radiologic changes of ankle joint after total knee arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: The authors noticed that ankle joint osteoarthritis was not uncommon when lower extremity malalignment, such as a knee varus deformity, was present as a result of severe osteoarthritis of the knee. The purpose of this study was to analyze radiologic changes of the ankle joint after total knee arthroplasty. METHODS: This study included 142 cases in 110 patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty and were followed for at least 3 years. The varus knee group included 128 cases and the valgus knee group included 14 cases. On anteroposterior standing lower extremity radiographs, varu

Neuromuscular ankle joint stabilisation after 4-weeks WBV training.

Whole body vibration (WBV) training is increasingly implemented in prevention programs as well as in rehabilitation protocols but evidence for beneficial effects of WBV training over several weeks on ankle joint stabilisation is lacking. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of 4-weeks WBV training on reflex activity of the long peroneal and tibialis anterior muscles and on the duration of ankle inversion movement in response to an unexpected combined 24 degrees inversion 15 degrees plantar flexion ankle joint motion. Twenty-six healthy subjects were divided into an intervent

[Reorientational arthrodesis of the ankle joint using four screws].

BACKGROUND: Arthrodesis of the ankle has gained wide acceptance as a first-line treatment option for painful posttraumatic osteoarthritis. The technique using four to five lag screws for internal osteosynthesis is a safe and biomechanically stable method to obtain a sound ankle fusion with good to excellent long-term results in the majority of patients. Malalignment hazards are minimized by preservation of the ankle mortise. METHODS: The meticulous resection of all cartilage and sclerotic bone as well as an atraumatic surgical technique are essential for preventing major complications. The ne

Arthrogenic muscle response to a simulated ankle joint effusion.

BACKGROUND: Arthrogenic muscle inhibition (AMI) is a continuing reflex reaction of the musculature surrounding a joint after distension or damage to the structures of that joint. This phenomenon has been well documented after knee joint injury and has been generalised to occur at other joints of the human body, yet minimal research has been conducted in this regard. The response of the muscles crossing the ankle/foot complex after ankle injury and effusion is not well understood. AMI may occur after an ankle sprain contributing to residual dysfunction. OBJECTIVE: To determine if AMI is presen

Ball-and-socket ankle joint with hypoplastic sustentaculum tali.

A case of unilateral ball-and-socket ankle joint associated with short limb and hypoplastic sustentaculum tali is reported. We think that hypoplastic sustentaculum tali was the cardinal feature in the anatomical and kinematic alterations of the foot in this patient. We review the embryonic development of hindfoot to ascertain the possible origin of this unusual finding.

Talocrural and subtalar joint instability after lateral ankle sprain.

PURPOSE: Recurrence of lateral ankle sprain (LAS) is common among recreational and competitive athletes. Talocrural (TC) joint laxity has traditionally been seen as the cause of mechanical instability after LAS. The purpose of this study was to examine the use of stress fluoroscopy and physical examination in the assessment of TC and subtalar (ST) instability in subjects with and without a history of LAS. METHODS: Twelve subjects with a history of unilateral LAS and eight healthy controls were examined by two blinded examiners. The first examiner performed physical examination on each ankle b

[Monolateral external compression arthrodesis of the upper ankle joint].

A new method of compression-arthrodesis of the ankle joint using monolateral external fixation is introduced. After bimalleolar incision and resection of the tibio-talar joint-surfaces, compression fixation was achieved by the Monofixateur placed ventromedially. The lateral malleolus was used as a bar-chip fixed with two screws. Between 1985 and 1988 this operation was performed on ten patients, mostly because of posttraumatic joint destruction. On the average the hospital stay was 17 days. Walking with crutches was allowed on the third postop. day with partial weight bearing after one week. T
