Is Ankyloglossia Correlated With Pediatric Sleep Disordered Breathing? A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) affects 2%-11% of children, predisposing them to neurobehavioral and developmental consequences. Ankyloglossia has been proposed as a risk factor for SDB, and frenotomy as a treatment for SDB in children with ankyloglossia. With increasing ankyloglossia diagnoses, it is critical to evaluate the evidence for a linkage between SDB and ankyloglossia. DATA SOURCES: EMBASE, Web of Science, Medline, CINAHL, CCRCT, and SCOPUS were searched from inception to February 13, 2025. Publications assessing the relationship between ankyloglossia and SDB in non-syn

A systematic review: The effects of frenotomy on breastfeeding and speech in children with ankyloglossia.

Purpose: The primary objective of this systematic review was to determine if frenotomy for ankyloglossia improves breastfeeding or speech outcomes in infants and children ages birth to 12.Method: Literature selection focussed on the presence of ankyloglossia, reported as either posterior or submucosal, and the impact of surgical treatment. The two populations that were included involve infants who were breastfeeding and children with speech delays. Six search engines were utilised (PubMed, Medline, Cochrane Database, CINHAL Plus, ERIC and PsychINFO). The selected articles critically examined s

Upper Lip Tie: Anatomy, Effect on Breastfeeding, and Correlation With Ankyloglossia.

OBJECTIVES: There is debate among otolaryngologists and other practitioners about whether upper lip tie contributes to difficulty with breastfeeding and whether upper lip tie and ankyloglossia are linked. Our objectives were to evaluate the anatomy of the upper lip (maxillary) frenulum, to determine if the visual anatomy of the upper lip has an effect on breastfeeding, and to determine whether the occurrence of lip tie and tongue tie are correlated. METHODS: A prospective cohort study of 100 healthy newborns was examined between day of life 3-7. Surveys were completed by the mother at the tim

Diagnosis and treatment of ankyloglossia: A narrative review and a report of three cases.

BACKGROUND: Ankyloglossia or tongue-tie is a congenital oral anomaly with short, tight, and thick lingual frenulum. It may be asymptomatic or can cause movement limitations of the tongue, speech and articulation difficulties, breastfeeding difficulties in neonates, as well as periodontal and malocclusion problems. The etiopathogenesis of ankyloglossia is unknown; it can occur either as a sole anomaly in the vast majority or in association with other craniofacial anomalies. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this paper were (1) to provide a comprehensive review on the criteria for clinical assessment and

Treatment of ankyloglossia for reasons other than breastfeeding: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Children with ankyloglossia, an abnormally short, thickened, or tight lingual frenulum, may have restricted tongue mobility and sequelae, such as speech and feeding difficulties and social concerns. We systematically reviewed literature on feeding, speech, and social outcomes of treatments for infants and children with ankyloglossia. METHODS: Medline, PsycINFO, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and Embase were searched. Two reviewers independently assessed studies against predetermined inclusion/exclusion criteria. Two investigators independen

Defining ankyloglossia: a case series of anterior and posterior tongue ties.

INTRODUCTION: Ankyloglossia is a congenital condition in which tongue mobility is limited due to an abnormality of the lingual frenulum. The impact of ankyloglossia on breastfeeding is poorly understood but there is a recent trend toward more recognition of this condition and early intervention when needed. Currently, there lacks clear definition of ankyloglossia and different subtypes have been proposed with no clinical correlation. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of anterior versus posterior ankyloglossia in a large series of consecutive patients and to assess clinical outcomes after

Ankyloglossia in the infant and young child: clinical suggestions for diagnosis and management.

Since the recommended time for a child's first dental visit is early, it is essential that pediatric dentists be familiar with all possible pathologies occurring during this early period of life. The parents of infants and toddlers who notice in their child a "tongue-tie" (ankyloglossia) are likely to turn first to their pediatric dentist for advice and help. Treatment options such as observation, speech therapy, frenotomy without anesthesia, and frenectomy under general anesthesia have all been suggested in the literature. The purposes of this report are to describe ankyloglossia, its clinica

Ankyloglossia and breastfeeding self-efficacy in newborns: a birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The impact of ankyloglossia (tongue-tie) on breastfeeding outcomes may be overestimated and surgical treatment in newborns remains a controversial topic. The aim of the present study was to assess and quantify the impact of ankyloglossia in newborns on breastfeeding self-efficacy at 14 days of life. METHODS: A birth cohort study was conducted involving mothers and newborns soon after childbirth at a public hospital in the city of Canoas, southern Brazil. At the hospital, the lingual frenum of newborns were clinically examined and classified using the Bristol Tongue Assessment Tool
