Heterozygous carriers of haemoglobin S and C (HbAS and HbAC) have a reduced risk of severe malaria but are not protected from Plasmodium falciparum infection, suggesting that the protection involves acquired immunity. During a blood meal, female Anopheles mosquitoes inject saliva that can elicit a host antibody response, which can serve as a proxy for exposure to Plasmodium infection. Previous studies have shown that the peptide gSG6-P1 of An. gambiae saliva is antigenic and highly Anopheles specific. Here, we used plasma samples from 201 Ghanaian children with wild-type haemoglobin (HbAA), Hb

BACKGROUND: Ivermectin (22,23-dihydroavermectin B1a: H2B1a) is an endectocide used to treat worm infections and ectoparasites including lice and scabies mites. Furthermore, survival of malaria transmitting Anopheles mosquitoes is strongly decreased after feeding on humans recently treated with ivermectin. Currently, mass drug administration of ivermectin is under investigation as a potential novel malaria vector control tool to reduce Plasmodium transmission by mosquitoes. A "post-ivermectin effect" has also been reported, in which the survival of mosquitoes remains reduced even after ivermect

Current studies on Anopheles anticholinesterase insecticides are focusing on identifying agents with high selectivity towards Anopheles over mammalian targets. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) from electric eel is often used as the bioequivalent enzyme to study ligands designed for activity and inhibition in human. In this study, previously identified derivatives of a potent AChE, donepezil, that have exhibited low activity on electric eel AChE were assessed for potential AChE-based larvicidal effects on four African malaria vectors; An. funestus, An. arabiensis, An. gambiae and An. coluzzii. Anopheles funestus is one of the major malaria vectors in Africa. As with the other main vectors, insecticide resistance in this species threatens existing vector control strategies. Unfortunately, scientific investigations, which could improve understanding of this vector species or lead to the development of new control strategies, are currently limited by difficulties in laboratory rearing of the species. In an attempt to optimise laboratory-rearing conditions for An. funestus, the effect of an artificial blood-feeding system for adults, different larval diet doses, and a range of other rea

BACKGROUND: Several studies carried out in Benin have shown the involvement of Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (s.l.), the Anopheles funestus group in malaria transmission, but none of them reported the contribution of the Anopheles nili group to the transmission of this disease. The current study investigated the question through an entomological cross-sectional survey performed in Northern Benin.
METHODS: Mosquito samplings were performed in September and October 2017 in 4 villages located in two districts: Bambaba and Wodara (Kérou district) and, Péhunco 2 and Béké (Péhunco district). The col

Anopheles sinensis is an important malaria vector in China and other Southeast Asian countries, and the emergence of insecticide resistance in this mosquito poses a serious threat to the efficacy of malaria control programs. The recently published An. sinensis genome and transcriptome provide an opportunity to understand the molecular mechanisms of insecticide resistance. Analysis of the An. sinensis genome revealed 174 detoxification genes, including 93 cytochrome P450s (P450s), 31 glutathione-S-transferases (GSTs), and 50 choline/carboxylesterases (CCEs). The gene number was similar to that

BACKGROUND: As pathogens that circumvent the host immune response are favoured by selection, so are host alleles that reduce parasite load. Such evolutionary processes leave their signature on the genes involved. Deciphering modes of selection operating on immune genes might reveal the nature of host-pathogen interactions and factors that govern susceptibility in host populations. Such understanding would have important public health implications.
METHODOLOGY/FINDINGS: We analyzed polymorphisms in four mosquito immune genes (SP14D1, GNBP, defensin, and gambicin) to decipher selection effects,

Anopheles gambiae s.s. Giles (Diptera: Culicidae), the primary African malaria vector, has been characterized at the subspecies level in Madagascar, where only the molecular form S and haplotype gIA occur. The haplotype gIC proposed by other authors was not observed amongst the 35 mosquito genomes sequenced. These S/gIA characteristics are also found on the Comoros archipelago and in continental Africa.

Spontaneous oxidation of 3-hydroxykynureine (3-HK), a metabolic intermediate of the tryptophan degradation pathway, elicits a remarkable oxidative stress response in animal tissues. In the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti the excess of this toxic metabolic intermediate is efficiently removed by a specific 3-HK transaminase, which converts 3-HK into the more stable compound xanthurenic acid. In anopheline mosquitoes transmitting malaria, xanthurenic acid plays an important role in Plasmodium gametocyte maturation and fertility. Using the sequence information provided by the Anopheles gambiae

As part of investigations on potential linkages between irrigation and malaria transmission, all surface water bodies in and around three villages along an irrigation distributary in South Punjab, Pakistan, were surveyed for anopheline mosquito larvae (Diptera: Culicidae) from April 1999 to March 2000. Samples were characterized according to exposure to sunlight, substratum, presence of vegetation, fauna, inorganic matter and physical water condition (clear/turbid/foul). Also water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), electroconductivity (EC) and pH of sites were recorded. A total of 37982 Anop

Oviposition preference of the Australasian coastal malaria vector Anopheles farauti s.s. for water of varying salinity was determined in the laboratory to help understand the distribution and control of this species in the field. Numbers of eggs laid showed an inverse relationship with salinity; of 5 NaCl concentrations most eggs were laid in distilled water but some were laid in 3.17% NaCl (the salinity of seawater). The association of An. farauti with coastal areas occurs in spite of an aversion to salt water by ovipositing females. Factors other than salinity must be the primary determinant

The utility of light traps for sampling Anopheles fluviatilis, the major malaria vector in the hill tracts of Koraput district, Orissa, was assessed. A modified version of the CDC miniature light trap was used in the study. The data generated from light trap collections were analysed and compared with daytime resting, man-biting and night resting collections carried out in parallel. The number per trap recorded in cattle sheds was significantly higher than that recorded in human dwellings. A similar pattern was observed in hand catches of indoor resting population though the difference was not

Anopheles stephensi is a mosquito endemic to South Asia and the Arabian Peninsula that has recently been detected in eight African countries, posing a significant threat to global malaria control efforts. A challenge with An. stephensi is that it requires unique surveillance and control tools when compared to other malaria vectors. Through a systematic literature review, we investigated the efficacy of trapping methods and controls for An. stephensi mosquitoes, with a focus on studies of its behavior and biology. Data from 83 articles (native range: Afghanistan, India, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, an

Anthropogenic changes to forest cover have been linked to an increase in zoonotic diseases. In many areas, natural forests are being replaced with monoculture plantations, such as oil palm, which reduce biodiversity and create a mosaic of landscapes with increased forest edge habitat and an altered micro-climate. These altered conditions may be facilitating the spread of the zoonotic malaria parasite Plasmodium knowlesi in Sabah, on the island of Borneo, through changes to mosquito vector habitat. We conducted a study on mosquito abundance and diversity in four different land uses comprising r

Malaria is a severe public health problem in several developing tropical and subtropical countries. Anopheles aquasalis is the primary coastal malaria vector in Central and South America and the Caribbean Islands, and it has the peculiar feature of living in water with large changes in salinity. Recent research has recognised An. aquasalis as an important model for studying the interactions of murine and human Plasmodium parasites. This study presents the complete genome of An. aquasalis and offers insights into its evolution and physiology. The genome is similar in size and gene content to ot
