Berry coloration in 'Summer Black' grape is strongly influenced by anthocyanin composition. This study investigated how seasonal temperature variation affects anthocyanin profiles and berry coloration. Winter berries accumulated significantly higher anthocyanin levels than summer berries, with total anthocyanin content reaching 2405.38 μg/g FW (fresh weight), compared with 1440.94 μg/g FW in summer berries. Winter berries exhibited a distinct pigment profile enriched in trihydroxylated anthocyanins, and delphinidin accumulation was 2.27-fold higher than that in summer berries at the final deve

Sharply delimited leaf spots may reflect local changes in chlorophyll background, anthocyanin composition and gene expression, but these components are rarely resolved between adjacent green and spotted tissues. Three spatially defined leaf tissue types were sampled from one wild T. macropoda individual: green tissue from an upper non-spotted leaf (GGreen), and adjacent green (SGreen) and dark spotted (SSpot) tissues from the same lower spotted leaf. Three independently processed spatial subsamples were collected from each tissue type, yielding nine analytical samples. Chlorophyll content and

LrMYB113 drives anthocyanin biosynthesis in Lycium ruthenicum by forming an MBW complex and directly activating LrDFR and LrANS promoters, providing a genetic target for enhancing flavonoid production. Lycium ruthenicum Murray (black goji berry), a Solanaceae medicinal plant, is valued for its high flavonoid content. However, the transcriptional regulation of flavonoid biosynthesis in L. ruthenicum remains unclear, hindering its pharmaceutical development. Here, we identified and characterized LrMYB113, an R2R3-MYB transcription factor, as a key regulator of anthocyanin biosynthesis in L. ruth

Anthocyanins, naturally occurring flavonoid pigments, have attracted substantial interest for intelligent food packaging due to their pronounced halochromic behavior, antioxidant activity, and biocompatibility. This review critically evaluates recent advances in green extraction technologies, including ultrasound-, microwave-, enzyme-, pulsed electric field-, and supercritical fluid-assisted extraction, with emphasis on their effects on anthocyanin yield, structural integrity, and pH-responsive performance. Furthermore, the influence of polymer matrices and fabrication techniques (e.g., solven

Anthocyanins are key flavonoid metabolites determining floral pigmentation, and their biosynthesis is tightly regulated through coordinated transcriptional and metabolic processes. Although R2R3-MYB transcription factors are well recognized as central regulators of anthocyanin biosynthesis, the roles of WER-like MYB members in anthocyanin metabolism remain largely unknown. In this study, we identified and functionally characterized HmWER-like, a WER/MYB114-like R2R3-MYB transcription factor from Hydrangea macrophylla, and investigated its role in anthocyanin metabolism and floral pigmentation.

Although cisplatin (CDDP) remains a widely used chemotherapeutic agent in clinical cancer treatment, severe oxidative stress and inflammatory responses induced by CDDP are still major causes of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients. Our previous studies have demonstrated that anthocyanins and selenocysteine (SeC) exhibit potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Here, we successfully synthesized a synergistic nanotherapeutic, cyanidin-3-O-glucoside-functionalized SeC nanoparticles (C3G@SeC NPs), which significantly alleviated CDDP-induced damage in HK-2 cells by inhibiting oxidative

Proteins have been studied and applied to improve the stability of anthocyanins (ACNs), but the changes in the pH microenvironment during the preparation of steady-state systems are often ignored, and more attention is given to the stability of the system after preparation. In this study, we propose the "anthocyanin front-end homeostasis strategy", which involves designing a system can protect anthocyanins under acidic conditions so that more anthocyanin prototypes can be loaded inside the protein. Anthocyanins are encapsulated in liposomes (Lip) at pH 3.0 and combined with casein methacrylate

evidence from animal experiments indicates that anthocyanin supplements can contribute to intestinal health. Nevertheless, no evidence has linked dietary anthocyanins to the prevention potential against inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in humans. We leveraged data from 188,044 IBD-free individuals (mean age 59 years; 55.2% females) from the prospective cohort UK Biobank. The anthocyanin intake was estimated using dietary information from validated 24 h dietary recalls. Incident IBD was ascertained via national health-related records. Apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) is a widely cultivated fruit crop worldwide but often suffers from abiotic stresses such as salt and cold. Gibberellic acid (GA) plays a pivotal in controlling plant development, environmental adaptability, and secondary metabolism. The GA2-oxidase (GA2ox) is responsible for the deactivation of bioactive GA. In this study, seventeen GA2-oxidase genes were identified in the apple genome, and these members could be clustered into four clades based on phylogenetic relationships and conserved domain structures. MdGA2ox7 exhibited robust expression across various tiss

Doubled haploid (DH) technology has become integral to maize breeding programs to expedite inbred line development and increase the efficiency of breeding operations. Unlike many other plant species that use in vitro methods, DH production in maize uses a relatively simple and efficient in vivo haploid induction method. However, it takes two complete crop cycles for DH line generation, one for haploid induction and the other one for chromosome doubling and seed production. Rescuing in vivo induced haploid embryos has the potential to reduce the time for DH line development and improve the effi

BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy is one of the non-invasive treatment modalities used to treat a wide range of oral mucosal lesions including oral leukoplakia, oral lichen planus, post-radiation-induced oral mucositis, and aphthous ulcerations. High-level laser therapy has also been employed in the management of oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs). Photodynamic therapy includes three major components: photosensitizer, light source, and presence of oxygen. Examples of commonly used photosensitizers are methylene blue; porphyrins; and 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) with light sources of differi

Cardioprotective potential of anthocyanin rich red cabbage extract (ARCE) was assessed in H2O2 treated rat neonatal cardiomyoblasts (H9c2 cells) and isoproterenol (ISO) induced rodent model of myocardial infarction. H2O2 treated H9c2 cells recorded cytotoxicity (48-50%) and apoptosis (57.3%), the same were reduced in presence of ARCE (7-10% & 12.3% respectively). Rats pretreated with ARCE for 30 days followed by ISO treatment recorded favourable heart: body weight ratio as compared to ISO treated group. Also, the mRNA levels of enzymatic antioxidants (sod and catalase) and apoptotic genes (bax

Pre-harvest multiple treatments of grapevine (cv. Merlot) with the plant activator benzothiadiazole (BTH, 0.3 mM) enhanced trans-resveratrol content in berries by about 40%. An even more striking effect was observed on anthocyanin synthesis, particularly on malvidine 3-glucoside, malvidine 3-(6-O-acetyl)glucoside and malvidine 3-(6-O-p-coumaroyl)glucoside, whose amounts were more than doubled. These data were obtained with a novel and time-saving HPLC method, set up for the simultaneous detection of stilbenes and anthocyanins, using an RF-10Axl fluorimetric detector instrument, with excitation

BACKGROUND: Anthocyanins and anthocyanin-rich berries have demonstrated lipid-lowering and anti-inflammatory effects; however, associations with cardiovascular disease remain mixed. We therefore examined anthocyanin and blueberry intake for prospective associations with cardiovascular disease risk and cross-sectional associations with lipids and hs-CRP (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein) in the WHS (Women's Health Study).
METHODS: Among 38 088 women who completed a baseline semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire in 1992 to 1995, we estimated intake of total anthocyanins, 6 anthocyani

Berry skin color CIE parameters, pH and anthocyanidin profiling of 46 grape accessions were investigated using CIE Lab system, pH measurement and anthocyanidin profiling. CIE parameters separated the samples into three groups: yellowish-green, pinkish-red, and purplish-black, and principal component analysis confirmed clear clustering, with the first two components explaining 99.1% of the variance. After anthocyanidin analysis, cyanidin was detected in all samples, whereas trace-level pelargonidin derivatives were identified by UPLC-MS/MS. Total anthocyanidin content was insufficient to evalua

Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt., a medicinal and edible herb, is valued for its diverse leaf coloration, attributed to varying levels of anthocyanin accumulation. The primary anthocyanins in P. frutescens are acylated cyanidin glycosides; however, the enzymes facilitating the acylation process have yet to be characterized. BAHD acyltransferases, known to catalyze such modifications, remain uncharacterized in P. frutescens. To systematically identify potential genes that may be associated with this function, we performed a comprehensive genome-wide analysis of the BAHD acyltransferase family in

Cold stress is a major environmental constraint limiting crop productivity and quality. Here, we identify a transcription factor MdGeBP3 in apple, which responds to cold stress at both transcriptional and post-translational levels. Functional analysis revealed that overexpression of MdGeBP3 significantly enhances cold tolerance in both apple calli and the model plant Arabidopsis, and the transcript levels of cold-responsive genes were induced in MdGeBP3 overexpression plants. Furthermore, MdGeBP3 was found to participate in anthocyanin biosynthesis. Overexpression of MdGeBP3 in Arabidopsis and

Brunfelsia acuminata (Pohl) Benth. exhibits a distinctive post-anthesis transition in flower color from purple to white, which is closely associated with anthocyanin degradation. However, the photobiological mechanisms regulating pigment stability during petal senescence remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated how different light qualities affect anthocyanin degradation, flavonoid and phenolic metabolism, and the expression of key anthocyanin biosynthetic genes in detached petals and flowers on intact plants. Among nine continuous light-quality treatments, red light most effec

Purple flower coloration in Michelia crassipes represents a rare pigmentation trait within the genus Michelia. Therefore, investigating the regulatory mechanisms of purple flowers in M. crassipes holds significant breeding value. Here, MYB52, a novel R2R3-MYB transcription factor in the M. crassipes flower, was isolated and functionally characterized. Heterologous expression of McMYB52 in tobacco triggered dark-red petal, which was driven by anthocyanin, flavonoid, and lignin accumulation. Histological comparison confirmed that the morphology of transgenic tobacco petal cells changed from fl

Anthocyanins are natural flavonoids derived from plants, widely recognized for their health-promoting effects, specifically to treat inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis). However, certain limitations are associated with their use, including instability, low solubility and permeability, poor gastrointestinal digestion, and low bioavailability. In this review, nano-carriers (e.g., liposome, polymersome, exosome, halloysite nanotubes, dendrimer, and nano-niosome, etc.) were summarized as anthocyanins delivery vehicles to treat inflammatory bowel disease. Recent prog
