Hierarchical physiological sensitivity of the coral, Orbicella faveolata, to suspended sediment and elevated temperature.

Coral reefs are increasingly exposed to multiple environmental stressors, including ocean warming and elevated turbidity from coastal development, dredging, and sediment resuspension. Understanding how these stressors affect coral physiology is essential for improving sediment management and protecting reef ecosystems. We investigated the short-term physiological responses of the Caribbean reef-building coral, Orbicella faveolata, to suspended sediment and elevated temperature during controlled 72-h laboratory experiments. Coral fragments were first exposed in independent chamber-sump systems

Marine clean-up dives remove more than just marine litter.

Ecological transformation is underway on Caribbean reefs, including the flattening of structural complexity and shifts in species assemblages. As marine litter accumulates faster than it can be removed, marine organisms increasingly use litter for shelter and substrate. This study used commercial litter removal dives to assess the cryptofauna most affected by such activities. Following state and federal protocols, displaced taxa were recorded from marine litter retrieved during 18 dive events. Mobile organisms, stony corals, and soft corals were classified, with polychaete worms, Scleractinia

Coral larval aquaculture: Species-specific survival and microbial dynamics in flow-through systems.

To enable burgeoning reef restoration efforts, the production of coral larvae in captive aquaculture needs to maximize survival and yields. While current coral larval rearing methods are generally successful, the approaches vary, and larval yields can be limited due to gradual declines in larval quality or sudden crashes. Here, we reared Acropora sp. nov. aff. kenti and Acropora spathulata larvae for seven days under different stocking densities (0.3, 1.0, or 2.0 larvae mL-1), water volume turnover rates (0.2 or 0.6 vol. hr-1), and with or without UV sterilization and surface agitation, to eva

The contingent advantage of photosymbiosis in coral evolution.

The ecological success of modern reef-building corals is rooted in photosymbiosis, yet its macroevolutionary benefit remains unclear. Analyzing the Phanerozoic record of inferred zooxanthellate (Z) and azooxanthellate (AZ) corals over geologic time scales using Bayesian methods, we identify a fundamental shift in diversification dynamics and their drivers across the Paleozoic-Mesozoic transition. Although Z corals dominate modern tropical reef ecosystems, their Paleozoic counterparts were outpaced by AZ forms and showed failed recoveries after the Late Devonian mass extinction. We found Z cora

Towards a systematic framework to assess restoration success of interventions in coral reef ecosystems.

An ecosystem is defined as a collection of organisms that move energy within and outside of a system, while sustaining both the system itself and the multiple services that benefit humanity. Ecosystem restoration, then, is ultimately concerned with reviving and maintaining ecosystem processes by repopulating organisms and enhancing the habitat after periods of disturbance or loss. Whether interventions are considered "successful" depends on three criteria: 1) were the goals/outcomes clearly defined before implementing the intervention; 2) did the outcome arise directly from the intervention, a

Coral restoration: roles of shelter for herbivores and reef state in early recruitment success.

Coral recruitment is crucial for reef recovery, yet our knowledge of recruit and juvenile coral demographics remains limited. To experimentally test whether shelter for herbivores and a healthy reefscape enhance colonization by corals, we deployed cubic-meter concrete modules in both low- and high-shelter configurations at the degraded reef off Waikı¯kı¯ Beach and the relatively healthy and fully protected reef at Hanauma Bay, O'ahu, Hawai'i. Settling corals of three dominant genera (Pocillopora, Montipora, and Porites) were surveyed quarterly to track individual recruitment, survival, and gro

Anthoteibinenes F-Q: New Sesquiterpenes from the Irish Deep-Sea Coral Anthothela grandiflora.

New technology has opened opportunities for research and exploration of deep-water ecosystems, highlighting deep-sea coral reefs as a rich source of novel bioactive natural products. During our ongoing investigation of the chemodiversity of the Irish deep sea and the soft coral Anthothela grandiflora, we report 12 unreported cadinene-like functionalized sesquiterpenes, anthoteibinenes F-Q. The metabolites were isolated using both bioassay- and 1H NMR-guided approaches. One-/two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry were used for structure elucidation, while a combi

Increasing microplastic concentrations have nonlinear impacts on the physiology of reef-building corals.

The pollution of marine environments with plastics, particularly microplastic (MP, i.e., plastic particles <5 mm), is a major threat to marine biota, including corals. While the effects of MPs are increasingly well understood, knowledge of how different concentrations of naturally occurring MP mixtures affect reef-building corals is still limited. Therefore, we aimed to elucidate the relationship of MP concentrations and their effects on reef-building corals. For this, we exposed two reef-building coral species (Stylophora pistillata and Pocillopora verrucosa) in a 12-week experiment to MPs at

The role of macroalgae in modulating coral calcification: Mixed species responses in a changing reef environment.

The ever increasing dominance of macroalgae on coral reefs is posing new challenges for coral growth and reef resilience. As a part of the continuous coral community monitoring program in Gulf of Mannar Marine Biosphere Reserve (GoMBR) in India, we observed that a few species of macroalgae were persistent throughout the year and remained in physical contact with corals. The effects of such competitive macroalgal interaction on the functional traits of corals are least understood. A series of insitu experiments were conducted to investigate the impact of three macroalgal species on the calcific

Severe hurricanes increase recruitment and gene flow in the clonal sponge Aplysina cauliformis.

Upright branching sponges, such as Aplysina cauliformis, provide critical three-dimensional habitat for other organisms and assist in stabilizing coral reef substrata, but are highly susceptible to breakage during storms. Breakage can increase sponge fragmentation, contributing to population clonality and inbreeding. Conversely, storms could provide opportunities for new genotypes to enter populations via larval recruitment, resulting in greater genetic diversity in locations with frequent storms. The unprecedented occurrence of two Category 5 hurricanes in close succession during 2017 in the

eCoral: How Electrolysis Could Restore Seawater Conditions Ideal for Coral Reefs.

Coral reefs suffer from climate change, including long-term ocean acidification (OA) and warming and short-term bleaching, tropical storms, and pollution events, all of which are increasing in frequency and severity. It is urgent yet unclear how to intervene to save coral reefs. Reversal of the ocean pH to preindustrial levels could restore coral reefs to their preindustrial growth rates; however, strategies to reverse OA on environmentally relevant scales have not been established. Anecdotally, electrolysis seems to help coral reefs recover from acidification and short-term events, but few un

Desert dust improves the photophysiology of heat-stressed corals beyond iron.

Desert dust is an important source of essential metals for marine primary productivity, especially in oligotrophic systems surrounded by deserts, such as the Red Sea. However, there are very few studies on the effects of dust on reef-building corals and none on the response of corals to heat stress. We therefore supplied dust to two coral species (Stylophora pistillata and Turbinaria reniformis) kept under control conditions (26 °C) or heat stress (32 °C). Since dust releases large amounts of iron (Fe) in seawater, among other metals, the direct effect of different forms of Fe enrichment on co

Quantifying venom production: A study on Micrurus snakes in Mexico.

Our study quantifies venom production in nine Mexican coral snake species (Micrurus), encompassing 76 specimens and 253 extractions. Noteworthy variations were observed, with M. diastema and M. laticollaris displaying diverse yields, ranging from 0.3 mg to 59 mg. For animals for which we have length data, there is a relationship between size and venom quantity. Twenty-eight percent of the observed variability in venom production can be explained by snake size, suggesting that other factors influence the amount of obtained venom. These findings are pivotal for predicting venom effects and guidi

Characterization of a sperm motility signalling pathway in a gonochoric coral suggests conservation across cnidarian sexual systems.

Most stony corals liberate their gametes into the water column via broadcast spawning, where fertilization hinges upon the activation of directional sperm motility. Sperm from gonochoric and hermaphroditic corals display distinct morphological and molecular phenotypes, yet it is unknown whether the signalling pathways controlling sperm motility are also distinct between these sexual systems. Here, we addressed this knowledge gap using the gonochoric, broadcast spawning coral Astrangia poculata. We found that cytosolic alkalinization of sperm activates the pH-sensing enzyme soluble adenylyl cyc

Dimethylsulphoniopropionate as a water quality indicator of coral bleaching: Implications for monitoring studies on the Great Barrier Reef.

Short term stress experiments with dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) and tripolyphosphate (TPP) have been carried out on the staghorn coral Acropora intermedia, collected from Heron Island in the southern Great Barrier Reef, at low and elevated seawater temperatures. Zooxanthellae, chlorophyll a, intracellular and tissue dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), and extracellular DMSP production were measured to assess the level of stress on A. intermedia at different winter and summer seasons from 2001 to 2003. Whilst no significant changes were measured in these stress indicators in 2001 and 200

Marine debris - An emerging threat to the reef areas of Gulf of Mannar, India.

Underwater survey was conducted to assess the accumulation and impact of marine debris in the reef areas of Gulf of Mannar in southeast India. A combination of roving diver technique and belt transect method was applied for the assessment, which was conducted during the period between February 2018 and March 2019. An estimated total reef area of 1152 m2 has been affected by marine debris. Abandoned fishing nets were found to constitute the major portion of 43.17 ± 5.48% of the marine debris. Live corals were found to be dominant substrates for marine debris with 39.11%. The average prevalence

Seasonal to decadal scale influence of environmental drivers on Ba/Ca and Y/Ca in coral aragonite from the southern Great Barrier Reef.

Extensive catchment modification since European settlement on the eastern coast of Australia results in poor coastal water quality, which poses a major threat for near shore coral communities in the iconic Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Long lived inshore corals have the potential to provide long-term temporal records of changing water quality both pre- and post-anthropogenic modification. However, water quality proxies require more study and validation of the robustness of coral-hosted geochemical proxies for a specific site is critical. This study investigated the long-term (1958-2010) influence

Modeling the effects of Irgarol 1051 on coral using lipidomic methodology for environmental monitoring and assessment.

Coral is commonly selected as a bioindicator of detecting a variety of adverse factors such as photosystem II herbicide Irgarol 1051, through measuring pan-type biomarkers. To improve the effectiveness of biomonitoring, omic technologies have recently been applied to model the systemic changes in an organism. Membrane lipids create a dynamic cell structure based on the physiological state, which offers a distinct lipid profile to specifically detect environmental threats and assess the associated health risk. To demonstrate the potential of a lipidomic methodology for biomonitoring, the glycer

Responses of reef building corals to microplastic exposure.

Pollution of marine environments with microplastic particles (i.e. plastic fragments <5 mm) has increased rapidly during the last decades. As these particles are mainly of terrestrial origin, coastal ecosystems such as coral reefs are particularly threatened. Recent studies revealed that microplastic ingestion can have adverse effects on marine invertebrates. However, little is known about its effects on small-polyp stony corals that are the main framework builders in coral reefs. The goal of this study is to characterise how different coral species I) respond to microplastic particles and whe
