Correlation of meconium-stained amniotic fluid, early intrapartum fetal pH, and Apgar scores as predictors of perinatal outcome.

A prospective study was undertaken to determine if the passage of meconium during the early intrapartum period (cervical dilatation 3 cm or less), the type of meconium passed (thick versus thin), and fetal pH values could be correlated with Apgar scores as a predictor of neonatal outcome. One hundred seventy-seven patients had meconium-stained amniotic fluid and a cervical dilatation of 3 cm or less at admission. Group 2 (thick meconium) had significantly lower 1- and 5-minute Apgar scores, lower scalp pH values, and increased risk factors, such as prolonged pregnancy, small-for-gestational-ag

Gestational age-related reference values for Apgar score and umbilical cord arterial and venous pH in preterm and term newborns.

INTRODUCTION: Despite much literature on reference values of acid-base status in umbilical cord blood at birth, there are as yet no studies performed to determine gestational age-dependent references in cord venous blood and no studies on preterm acid-base standards. Similarly, the normal reference range of Apgar scores for term and preterm infants has not yet been determined. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data were obtained from the maternity units of Skåne University Hospital, Malmö and Lund, Sweden, from 2001 to 2010. Validated paired arterial and venous cord pH values were obtained from 27 175 ne

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions at 6 months in term infants after perinatal hypoxia-ischaemia or with a low Apgar score.

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were analyzed at 6 months of age in term infants who had perinatal hypoxia-ischaemia (HI) and those who had a low Agar score alone to detect any abnormalities in cochlear function and any difference between the two groups of infants. The f2 primary tone was presented at ten frequencies (0.5-10 kHz). Both the left and right ears were tested. Compared to normal term controls, both the infants after perinatal HI and those with a low Apgar score alone showed lower DPOAE pass rates, mainly at 1-4 kHz at which the pass rates were decreased significan

Low Apgar score and need for resuscitation increased the probability of receiving therapeutic hypothermia more strongly than acidosis at birth.

AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate how individual markers for birth asphyxia, so-called A criteria, were associated with the probability of receiving therapeutic hypothermia. METHODS: This population-based cohort study included 1336 live-born singleton term infants with any A criterion in the Stockholm-Gotland Region, Sweden during 2008 to 2014. The Swedish Neonatal Quality Register and National Patient Register were used for data collection. Results were presented as adjusted odds ratios (aORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: There were 89 infants, 44 boys and 45 gi

The determinants of 5th minute low Apgar score among newborns who delivered at public hospitals in Hawassa City, South Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Newborn morbidity and mortality are forecasted using the Apgar scores. Obstetricians worldwide have used the Apgar score for more than half a century for the assessment of immediate newborn conditions. It is a simple and convenient evaluation system that offers a standardized and effective assessment of newborn infants. Neonatal morbidity and mortality can be reduced if high-risk neonates are identified and managed adequately. This study aimed to assess the determinants of 5th minute low Apgar score among newborns at Public hospitals in Hawassa city, South Ethiopia. METHODS: A hos

Association between 5-min Apgar score and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a Scotland-wide record linkage study of 758,423 school children.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects around 1 in 20 children and is associated with life-long sequelae. Previous studies of the association between Apgar score and ADHD have reported inconsistent findings. METHODS: Record linkage of maternity, prescribing and school pupil census databases was used to conduct a population e-cohort study of singleton children born in Scotland and attending school in Scotland at any point between 2009 and 2013. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the association between 5-min Apgar score and treated ADHD adj

SARS-2 COVID-19-induced immunity response, a new prognostic marker for the pregnant population correlates inversely with neonatal Apgar score.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 infection has impacted pregnancy outcomes; however, few studies have assessed the association between haematological parameters and virus-related pregnancy and neonatal outcomes. We hypothesised differences in routine haematology indices in pregnant and non-pregnant COVID-19 patients as well as COVID-19-negative pregnant subjects and observed neonatal outcomes in all pregnant populations. Further, we tested if pattern identification in the COVID-19 pregnant population would facilitate prediction of neonates with a poor Apgar score. METHODS: We tested our hypothesis in

Apgar Score at 5 Minutes Is Associated with Mortality in Extremely Preterm Infants Even after Transfer to an All Referral NICU.

OBJECTIVE: The Apgar score has been shown to have utility in predicting mortality in the extremely preterm infant in delivery hospital populations, where most mortality occurs within 12 hours of birth. We tested the hypothesis that the 5 minute Apgar score would remain associated with mortality in extremely preterm infants after transfer from the delivery hospital to an all referral neonatal intensive care unit at an average age of 10 days. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective analysis of 454 infants born at < 27 weeks gestation. RESULTS: The median Apgar score was 3 at 1 minute (interquartile rang

No Association Between Umbilical Cord pH and Special Educational Needs Among Children With Normal 5-Minute Apgar Scores.

AIM: Most infants with a low cord pH have reassuring 5-min Apgar scores of 7-10, but their long-term outcomes have been poorly studied. We examined whether cord pH predicted later special educational needs (SEN). METHOD: This nationwide register-based study was conducted in Denmark, which provides universal cord pH screening. It comprised singletons born after 35 weeks of gestation from 2006 to 2013, with 5-min Apgar scores of 7-10 and cord pH values of < 7.0, 7.0-7.09, and ≥ 7.1. Information on SEN was obtained from national registers until June 3, 2020, when the children were 6.5-14.5 years

Detecting Major Complications and Death After Emergency Abdominal Surgery Using the Surgical Apgar Score: A Retrospective Analysis in a Caribbean Setting.

OBJECTIVE: The Surgical Apgar Score (SAS) is a simple 10-point scoring system that has been shown to be predictive of major postoperative complications and death after surgery. We evaluated the predictive ability of this score in a cohort of patients undergoing emergency abdominal surgery in a Caribbean tertiary hospital. METHODS: The SAS was calculated retrospectively from the anaesthesia records of all patients undergoing emergency abdominal surgery during a 12-month period. The postoperative surgical records of these patients were then examined for the presence of major complications and d
