Newcastle disease virus (NDV) belonging to the Paramyxovirinae subfamily is one of the most devastating pathogens in poultry. Although vaccines are widely applied to control the infection, outbreaks of Newcastle disease (ND) repeatedly happen. Currently, there are no alternative control measures available for ND. In the present study, we found that sulfated Chuanmingshen violaceum polysaccharide (sCVPS) were potent inhibitors of NDV in specific pathogen free chickens infected with a virulent strain. With sCVPS treatment, the survival rate increased by almost 20% and virus titers in test organs

Inhibition of vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation is of substantial interest in combating cardiovascular disease. A dichloromethane extract from the rhizomes of Peucedanum ostruthium, a traditionally used Austrian medicinal plant with anti-inflammatory properties, was examined for a putative antiproliferative activity in rat aortic VSMC. This extract inhibited serum (10%)-induced VSMC proliferation concentration dependently. Further identification and biological testing of its major constituents revealed that the coumarin ostruthin (7) is the major antiproliferative substance. In

Medicinal plants are a valuable source of bioactive metabolites, and current research focuses particularly on increasing their productivity and studying previously little-known species. Of particular interest are representatives of the families Lamiaceae, Apiaceae, and Asteraceae, for which either no data exists or only brief information is available regarding their chemical composition and biological properties. In this context, the family Lamiaceae, one of the dominant families in the flora of Kazakhstan, deserves special attention. Within the republic, it is represented by 233 species, grou

For thousands of years, medicinal plants and their constituents have been used, mostly empirically/ethnopharmacologically, to cure patients with central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Anxiolytics derived from natural products (NPs) often share similar mechanisms of action to synthetic ones (e.g., benzodiazepines, BDZs). Although typically as effective as synthetic anxiolytics, NPs are considered to be devoid of the serious side effects linked to the use of BDZs. 8-Methoxypeucedanin (8-MP) is a rare furanocoumarin present in the fruits of Peucedanum luxurians Tamamsch. (Apiaceae). The primary

A novel electrochemical sensor was constructed for the determination of artemisinin (ART) based on the inhibition of redox for hemin caused by ART. As far as we know, this strategy for ART determination may be proposed for the first time. In this work, untreated multi-walled carbon nanotubes were cast on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) as conductive carrier. We prepared a bimetallic organic framework named FeGd-MOF and combined it with hemin by a simple physical mixed method. Then, we fabricated the working electrode by layer-by-layer modification and immobilization. The sensor measured by t

More than 60 species of medicinal plants belong to the genus Angelica (Family: Apiaceae). Many of these species have long been used in ancient traditional medicine systems, especially in the far-east. Various herbal preparations containing Angelica species are available over-the-counter, not only in the far-eastern countries, but also in the western countries like USA, UK, Germany, etc. For centuries, many species of this genus, e.g. A. acutiloba, A. archangelica, A. atropupurea, A. dahurica, A. japonica, A. glauca, A. gigas, A. koreana, A. sinensis, A. sylvestris, etc., have been used traditi

Cnidium monnieri (L.) Cusson (Apiaceae) is a well-known insectary plant in farmlands. Its vegetative and flowering stages can promote the migration of natural enemies. However, the arrival of natural enemies in crop fields often lags behind the establishment of pest populations. As gibberellin can accelerate plant growth and flowering, we investigated whether gibberellin treatment could advance the recruitment of natural enemies by altering the phenology of C. monnieri. Field experiments were conducted in 2021 and 2022 to evaluate the effects of different gibberellin concentrations on plant ph

Cnidium monnieri (L.) Cusson, a member of the Apiaceae family, is rich in coumarins, such as imperatorin and osthole. Cnidium monnieri fruit (CM) has a broad range of therapeutic potential that can be used in anti-bacterial, anti-cancer, and sexual dysfunction treatments. However, its efficacy in lowering blood pressure through vasodilation remains unknown. This study aimed to assess the potential therapeutic effect of CM 50% ethanol extract (CME) on hypertension and the mechanism of its vasorelaxant effect. CME (1-30 µg/mL) showed a concentration-dependent vasorelaxation on constricted aortic

Lymphatic filariasis is caused by infection with the parasitic filarial nematodes Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and B. timori, transmitted by mosquitoes. The lack of an adulticidal drug poses a challenge to filariasis elimination, hence it is essential to develop an effective antifilarial drug which could either kill or permanently sterilize the adult worms. In the reported work the in vitro activity of a methanolic extract of fruits of Trachyspermum ammi (Apiaceae) against adult bovine filarial Setaria digitata worms has been investigated. A bioassay-guided fractionation was carried out

Acrolein (Acr) is a reactive aldehyde in the environment. Acr causes oxidative stress and a cascade of catalytic events and has, thereby, been associated with increased risk of pulmonary diseases. Whether apiaceous vegetables (API) consumption can prevent Acr-induced pulmonary toxicity has not yet been explored hence, we investigated the effects of API on Acr-induced pulmonary damages in C57BL/6J mice. The mice were assigned into either negative control [NEG group; American Institute of Nutrition (AIN)-93G diet only], positive control (POS group; AIN-93G+Acr) or API intervention group (API gro
