Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma (PCACC) is an uncommon adnexal skin tumor. It is usually located on the head or neck of people over 50 years of age, affecting men and women equally. The etiology is unclear; the source used to be considered the eccrine glands, but more recent hypotheses defend this carcinoma as originating in the apocrine glands or modified apocrine glands. The tumor may clinically appear as a normal skin-colored nodule with ill-defined edges and slow growth. Histologically, a proliferation of neoplastic cells appears, which could present in a tubular, cribriform, or

Axillary osmidrosis is a distressing problem. Since the secretion from apocrine glands is believed to be responsible for malodour, many treatment modalities have been developed to remove the glands. Local surgery with the excision of the apocrine glands has been proved to be most effective. We introduce the treatment of axillary osmidrosis, using Versajet (Versajet hydrosurgery system, Smith & Nephew, Memphis, TN, USA). From October 2010 to February 2012, 31 patients (21 females and 10 males) whose age ranged from 12 to 63 years were treated. All patients were followed up for 13.1 months on av

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a suppurative inflammatory disease of the apocrine sweat glands. It affects the apocrine gland bearing regions, the axillae being the most common site. It causes considerable morbidity and has several complications. The etiology is unknown and there is no standard method of treatment. A comprehensive review of the literature is presented demonstrating a paucity of information about this disease. The authors' experience and the management of the axillary lesion is outlined. Radical excision of the apocrine gland bearing area with split thickness skin graft (STSG) aft

In this study, we applied the antibody against the molecular weight 15,000 protein purified from breast cyst fluid (GCDFP-15) to cutaneous tissue, especially to sweat glands. Breast cyst fluid was obtained by needle aspiration from patients with gross cystic disease. DEAE-cellulose column chromatography was performed and followed by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Antisera against the purified protein were prepared in rabbits. We stained specimens of normal skin by the PAP method. The normal apocrine gland cells were strong positive and eccrine gland dark cells were positive. Eccrine g

Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is regarded as a specific marker of prostatic epithelium and has never been detected by immunocytochemistry in extra-prostatic tissues. The casual finding of a strong positivity for polyclonal antisera to PSA in a sweat gland carcinoma prompted a study on a series of skin adnexial and breast specimens (normal and neoplastic). Normal axillary and perineal apocrine sweat glands, some apocrine foci in fibrocystic breast disease and two sweat gland and two breast apocrine carcinomas were stained by several PSA antisera; a recently introduced monoclonal to PSA, howev

Invasive apocrine carcinomas (IACs), as defined by morphological features, correspond to 0.3-4% of all invasive ductal carcinomas (IDC), and despite the fact that they are histologically distinct from other breast lesions there are currently no standard molecular criteria available for their diagnosis and no unequivocal information as to their prognosis. In an effort to address these concerns we have been using protein expression profiling technologies in combination with mass spectrometry and immunohistochemistry (IHC) to discover specific biomarkers that could allow us to molecularly charact

Apocrine hidrocystoma is a benign, cystic proliferation of the apocrine sweat gland that may present commonly on sun-exposed areas of the head and neck. However, given its location and features, apocrine hidrocystomas may often be confused with malignant tumors such as basal cell carcinomas or primary cutaneous mucinous carcinomas. Herein, we present an unusual case of an apocrine hidrocystoma presenting in the postauricular region and highlight the importance of histopathological examination of cystic tumors on the periauricular area.

The histogenesis of mammary Paget's disease (MPD) and extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) cells remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to investigate MPD and EMPD immunohistochemically with antibodies to some tumour markers (Ca 15-3, KA-93 and Ca 19-9), and a cell surface receptor for hyaluronate (CD44), as these have been shown to be expressed in normal eccrine or apocrine glands and/or the epidermis, as well as some tumours. Surgically excised, formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues, or frozen tissues, from seven mammary, five vulvar, two scrotal and two axillary lesions wer

Apocrine adenocarcinoma of the eyelid is a rare sweat gland cancer. It is predominant in older adults and has increased prevalence in males. Management is based on recommendations from reported cases and their outcomes. Surgical excision is considered effective in apocrine adenocarcinoma of the eyelid. We report the case of a 58-year-old woman with apocrine adenocarcinoma located on her left upper eyelid. Excisional biopsy demonstrated focal apocrine secretion in a basaloid nest proliferation. The patient had no recurrence at four months. Our case provides insight into the workup and managemen

BACKGROUND: Recently, the novel antimicrobial peptide named dermcidin (DCD) was reported in human eccrine sweat glands.
OBJECTIVES: We investigated the expression of DCD in a variety of cutaneous tumours in order to assess the usefulness of the monoclonal antibody (G-81), which recognizes a fragment of DCD.
PATIENTS/METHODS: We studied the immunoreactivity of the G-81 antibody on 197 cutaneous tumours.
RESULTS: A total of 13 of 26 cutaneous mixed tumours showed substantial immunoreactivity. In contrast all the following cases were completely unreactive: (i) epithelial tumours (seborrhoeic k

BACKGROUND: Though minimally invasive procedures often yield excellent esthetic results for axillary osmidrosis, the high recurrence rates of malodor limit its further application. Incomplete removal of the apocrine glands would lead to recurrence of the axillary bromhidrosis, while excessive resection of the apocrine glands firmly attached to the dermis would easily result in local skin necrosis. Therefore, accurate management of the apocrine glands is extraordinarily important, particularly with a limited access. Herein, we would like to introduce an effective and minimally invasive procedur

Apocrine hidrocystomas are benign cystic lesions derived from the sweat glands of Moll and seldom found in the orbit. The authors present a case of a 41-year-old healthy man, with no prior medical history, referred for a painless enlarging mass, medial to his right upper eyelid for the past 3 months. Computed tomography showed a well-defined cystic lesion localized in the supero-medial anterior orbit. Following complete excision of the lesion, histopathology revealed an apocrine hidrocystoma. Although rare, apocrine hidrocystomas should be considered in the differential diagnosis for cystic ma

Apocrine hidrocystomas (AHC) are uncommon cystic lesions of apocrine glands and are most often solitary. They are usually found in the head and neck region. Multiple AHC have been rarely reported in the literature usually in the eyelids and face. On extensive search of literature, we came across only a single case report of multiple axillary AHC. We report a case of a 31-year-old female who presented with fullness and discomfort in bilateral axillae, so a clinical diagnosis of bilateral accessory breast was made. However on histopathological examination, it turned out to be bilateral multiple

We report the case of a 67-year-old woman who presented with a peri-anal skin tag. Histologically, the excised lesion showed features of tubulopapillary apocrine hidradenoma, with an area showing features of carcinoma in situ. The lesion also had papillary and cribriform growth patterns, reminiscent of breast lesions. Similar to vulvar lesions, peri-anal apocrine tumours are believed to arise in mammary like glands (MLGs). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first description of a peri-anal adenocarcinoma in situ arising in a tubulopapillary apocrine hidradenoma. The relationship to MLGs

An unusual papillary tumour of the vulva is described which exhibits apocrine features, as currently defined. The tumour has areas which resemble sclerosing adenosis of the breast and also exhibits mucinous and sebaceous differentiation. A review of the literature reveals a small number of similar lesions of the vulva. Many of these have been classified as lesions of ectopic breast tissue. In the absence of associated normal breast lobules it is impossible to differentiate these from lesions arising from apocrine sweat glands. This papillary apocrine fibroadenoma may represent a distinct cutan

Apocrine hidrocystomas are benign cysts of sweat duct origin, originating mainly from the apocrine secretory glands of Moll. They are typically encountered in the head and neck, particularly around the inner canthus of the eyelid. An intraorbital location of this lesion is extremely rare but should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a painless cystic lesion in the ocular adnexa at any age.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the use of 33 MHz ultra-high-frequency ultrasonography (33MHz-UHFUS) for evaluating axillary sweat glands with osmidrosis in comparison with histological techniques. Axillary osmidrosis is a common problem in Asian societies, and the number and size of apocrine sweat glands have a strong relationship with osmidrosis severity. Currently, there are no methods to evaluate sweat gland distribution non-invasively.
METHODS: In this study, 35 skin specimens from 10 fresh human cadavers without osmidrosis and retrospective ultrasonographic images from 20 patient

Extramammary Paget disease (EMPD) is a rare malignant neoplasm of apocrine sweat glands that is morphologically and histologically identical to Paget disease of the breast. The primary lesion is usually a solitary, well-demarcated, erythematous, scaly plaque that may contain crust, erosions, or ulcerations. The vulva is the most common site, but any area containing apocrine sweat glands may be involved. We present a case of triple extramammary Paget disease of the groin and bilateral axillae in a diabetic patient whose axillary lesions appeared consistent with acanthosis nigricans. This case d

The term sweat-gland carcinoma of the breast is used in widely different meanings. Nonetheless, two histologically well-characterized types may be recognized: 1. The apocrine (oncocytic) carcinoma is composed of large well-delimited cells with finely granular, oxyphilic cytoplasm similar to that of oncocytes of other organs. They resemble the "pale" oxyphilic cells of the aging normal breast whose cytoplasm in part show the same quality. These carcinoma cells are regarded as mammary cells in a state of transition into oncocytes. Any similarity they have to cells of the apocrine axillary sweat-
