About 47% of Nepal's total population is living in Terai region and 90% of them are relying on groundwater as their major source of drinking water. About 200,000 shallow tubewells have been installed by different agencies in 20 Terai districts, serving 11 million people. Recently, arsenic contamination of groundwater has been recognized as a public health problem in Nepal. This has sensitized government, national and international nongovernment organizations working on water quality sector to carry out water quality assessment for arsenic in the affected communities. So far, 15,000 tubewells h

While arsenic has been used medicinally and as a poison for thousands of years, Fowler's solution, an arsenic compound, has had a fascinating history in medicine during the past 200 years. The use of Fowler's solution was first described and published as a treatment for malaria and syphilis in the late 1700s. Many clinical applications for Fowler's solutions have been studied and utilized over the years, but toxicities have limited its utility. Even so, arsenic trioxide, chemically related to Fowler's solution, was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treating acute promyelocyti

Arsenic contamination of groundwater in the West Bengal basin in India is unfolding as one of the worst natural geo-environmental disasters to date. Chelation therapy with chelating agents is considered to be the best known treatment against arsenic poisoning; however, they are compromised with certain serious drawbacks/side-effects. Efficacy of combined administration of Moringa oleifera (M. oleifera) (English: Drumstick tree) seed powder, a herbal extract, with a thiol chelator monoisoamyl DMSA (MiADMSA) post-arsenic exposure in mice was studied. Mice were exposed to 100 ppm arsenic in drink

Arsenic was present in Napoleon's hair before he arrived on Saint Helena and the findings at necropsy are consistent only with the diagnosis of ulcerating, regionally invasive, gastric carcinoma. The question of whether Napoleon died of, or merely with, arsenic poisoning is illuminated by developments in the treatment of promyelocytic leukaemia. Arsenic trioxide induces remission in many, but treatment can be complicated by QT prolongation, torsades de pointes and sudden death. At clinically relevant concentrations, arsenic blocks both I(Kr) and I(ks) channels and, at the same time, activates

We report a rare incident of acute arsine poisoning when cleaning an industrial purifier to enhance awareness for the prevention of arsine poisoning incidents in the family-run workshop. In this incident, three workers of a family-run cleaning workshop developed symptoms of headache, abdominal pain, chills, fatigue, and hematuria after cleaning an industrial purifier, with a latency period 4-6 h after exposure. Field investigations and laboratory tests were used to investigate the poisoning incident. Red blood cell counts and levels of hemoglobin, alanine transaminase, and urinary arsenic (As)

Thallium poisoning is known for its diverse manifestations and these can delay the diagnosis if a clear history of poisoning is not forthcoming. A 42 year old man presented on the third day of illness with flaccid quadriparesis and paresthesia, which were confused with Guillain-Barré syndrome. Because of associated loose motions, skin lesions, and liver and kidney dysfunction arsenic poisoning was considered. In the second week he developed ophthalmoplegia, nystagmus, and neck tremor and later developed alopecia, and thallium poisoning was suspected. His serum thallium level on the 18th day of

Despite having a rich history as a poison, arsenic and its compounds have also gained a great reputation as promising anticancer drugs. As a pioneer, arsenic trioxide has been approved for the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia. Many in vitro studies suggested that arsenic trioxide could also be used in the treatment of solid tumors. However, the transition from bench to bedside turned out to be challenging, especially in terms of the drug bioavailability and concentration reaching tumor tissues. To address these issues, nanomedicine tools have been proposed. As nanocarriers of arsenic

We report 9 patients (5 males, 4 females, ages 63-77) with chronic polyneuropathy. They were exposed to arsenic for about 15-40 years in Toroku Valley, Takachiho-Town, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan, where a mining company produced arsenic from 1920-1962. Predominantly sensory polyneuropathy was the most significant neurological finding. In 5 of them, superficial and deep sensation was equally affected over the entire body, including head, face, and mucous membranes of the mouth. The corneal reflexes were absent or sluggish. Pin-prick and light-touch perception was absent in their hands and legs.

INTRODUCTION: Arsenic trioxide is available for home use in ant baits. Potential arsenic toxicity from unintentional pediatric ingestion is not well studied. The goal of this study is to describe the clinical course and urinary arsenic concentrations of children who ingested ant bait containing arsenic trioxide (0.46%).
METHODS: This is a case series of pre-school children who unintentionally ingested arsenic trioxide ant bait gel bars in the home reported to two U.S. poison control centers from January 2003 to July 2007.
RESULTS: Six children (age range, 8 months to 4 years) ingested varyin

BACKGROUND: Skin lesions are an early and distinct symptom of waterborne arsenic poisoning, while pigment disorder is the first symptom of skin lesions. Therefore, an in-depth analysis of the association between pigment disorders and arsenic concentration in drinking water can be used as a basis for the development of arsenic drinking water standards. However, it remains unclear whether arsenic primarily causes depigmentation or hyperpigmentation, and what dose of arsenic is safe with respect to skin symptoms.
METHODS: A meta-analysis was performed using Stata 17.0 software. PubMed, Embase, W

Heavy metals are, unfortunately, present in the air, water, and food supply. Cases of severe acute lead, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium poisoning are rare; however, when they do occur an effective, non-toxic treatment is essential. In addition, chronic, low-level exposure to lead in the soil and in residues of lead-based paint, to mercury in the atmosphere, in dental amalgams and in seafood, and to cadmium and arsenic in the environment and in cigarette smoke is much more common than acute exposure. Meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) is a sulfhydryl-containing, water-soluble, non-toxic, or

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a global public health issue. Beyond genetic variation and behavior-related risk factors, inorganic arsenic, with a broad exposed population, serves as a critical environmental risk factor for MASLD. While hepatic steatosis has been identified as the initiating event of arsenic-induced MASLD, its effect biomarkers and underlying mechanisms remain unclear, a knowledge gap that is crucial for risk monitoring and early intervention. This study aims to identify the biomarkers and potential epigenetic mechanisms of arse

Arsenic, a widespread environmental contaminant, threatens millions globally through contaminated water, soil, and food. While arsenic compounds are used to treat acute promyelocytic leukemia, their toxic legacy includes cancers, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and neurodegeneration, primarily driven by oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and epigenetic instability. Sirtuins, a family of NAD⁺-dependent enzymes, are central to cellular defense, orchestrating metabolism, stress resistance, DNA repair, and longevity. Arsenic disrupts sirtuin function, particularly SIRT1, SIRT2, and SIR

Arsenic toxicity is a major concern due to its deleterious consequences for human health. Rapid industrialization also has weakened the quality of the environment by introducing pollutants that may disrupt balanced ecosystems, adversely and irreversibly impacting humans, plants, and animals. Arsenic, an important toxicant among all environmental hazards, can lead to several detrimental effects on cells and organs, impacting the overall quality of life. Nevertheless, arsenic also has a rich history as a chemotherapeutic agent used in ancient days for the treatment of diseases such as malaria, c
