Mercury and methylmercury accumulation and excretion in prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) receiving chronic doses of methylmercury.

Methylmercury cation (MeHg) and divalent mercury (Hg++) accumulation in liver, kidney, and brain were quantified in prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) at 0, 3, 6, and 12 weeks during chronic exposure to aqueous MeHg. Dose groups received deionized water or aqueous solutions containing 9, 103, or 920 ng MeHg/ml. Our study presents temporal patterns of Hg++ and MeHg concentrations in organ tissues and makes inter-tissue comparisons at each time point to illustrate the accumulation and distribution of Hg species during the study. MeHg was accumulated in tissues for 3 weeks and then concentratio

Selective digesta retention and coprophagy in Brandt's vole (Microtus brandti).

Digestive performance, gut morphology and rate of digesta passage were measured in Brandt's voles (Microtus brandti) offered pelleted diets of low (25% neutral-detergent fibre) and high (38%) fibre content. Digestion coefficients of dry matter, crude fat, crude protein, energy and fibre were all significantly lower on the higher fibre diet. Although not significantly higher, dry matter intakes were more than maintained when extra cellulose was included in the diet, so that intakes of digestible energy were only 22% lower on the higher fibre diet. Total length and total gut tissue weight increa

Pineal and photoperiodic influences on fat deposition, pelage, and testicular activity in male meadow voles.

Pinealectomy completely prevented gonadal regression as well as reduction in body weight and white adipose tissue content of the gonadal and retroperitoneal fat deposits in male meadow voles transferred from long to short day lengths. Pineal influences on pelage characteristics depended on which parameter was assessed. For instance, the increase in guard hair length observed in short-day control voles was blocked by pinealectomy; however, a similar increase in underhair length was unaffected by removal of the pineal gland. Photoperiod-dependent changes in fat deposition, testicular activity, a

[Suppression of parasitemia in rodent filariasis (Litomosoides carinii) by immunization with BCG and microfilaria. I. Intracutaneous inoculation of BCG].

After intracutaneous inoculation of BCG and challenge by subcutaneous injection of infective larvae of Litomosoides carinii, the parasitaemia of the filarial infection in cotton rats remains significantly lower when BCG and larvae are applied in the region of the same popliteal and ileal lymph nodes. However, when the infective larvae are directed to other regional lymph nodes (Ln cubitales and axillares), the depression of microfilaraemia is missed. The worm load (recovery rate) and the expulsion of microfilariae by the adult worms are not influenced by the BCG inoculation. Obviously BCG stim

Small terrestrial mammals as reservoirs of leptospires in the Sava Valley (Croatia).

Small mammals trapped in seven sites along the river Sava in Croatia were examined for leptospiral infection by renoculture and serological methods. Of the 1749 animals caught 702 were examined by renoculture method and 626 were tested by microagglutination-lysis. The dominant animals species caught were Microtus arvalis (672 animals) and Apodemus agrarius (552 animals). Of the 115 strains of leptospires isolated the dominant serotypes were L. grippotyphosa (40) and L. pomona (35). Five strains of L. sejroe, 9 strains of L. australis, 1 strain of L. bataviae and 25 undetermined strains were is

Host hybridization enabled the emergence of a reassorted hantavirus lineage.

The exchange of genetic material between individuals is a key driver of evolution and diversification across most branches of life. Segmented viruses can exchange genetic material through reassortment of genomic segments. New viral strains that emerge from reassortments can have greater infection ranges and higher virulence, although concrete examples of the adaptive advantages of reassortants in nature apart from influenza remain rare. We studied here the evolutionary history and consequences of reassortment in Tula orthohantavirus (TULV) in a hybrid zone between evolutionary lineages of its

Photoperiod alters the diurnal rhythm pattern of testicular transcription and metabolism in Brandt's voles.

Photoperiod changes serve as critical environmental signals for seasonally reproducing animals, with their decoding dependent on the precise functioning of endogenous circadian clocks. Here we conducted a comprehensive analysis of diurnal transcripts and metabolites profiles in the testes of Brandt's voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii) under long photoperiod (LP) and short photoperiod (SP), to elucidate the role of circadian rhythms within peripheral testicular tissue in regulating reproduction. Phenotypic results demonstrated that LP promoted testicular development, whereas SP suppressed it. Then w

Patterns of helminth parasite infections in cyclic common vole (Microtus arvalis) populations.

Research on parasite-induced regulation has identified the conditions under which parasites can destabilise host population dynamics: high levels of aggregation, delayed density-dependence, and moderate negative effects on fitness (reproduction, survival). Gastrointestinal helminths with direct life cycles and a single definitive host provide ideal systems to test these predictions. In this study, we first determined which helminths infect common voles (Microtus arvalis) in NW Spain, where populations are cyclic. We showed that the helminth community is dominated by Syphacia sp., a gut-restric

Subterranean Traits of the Visual System in Mandarin Voles (Lasiopodomys mandarinus): Structural Remodeling and Functional Degeneration.

The visual systems of subterranean mammals often exhibit significant physiological and structural modifications due to light-restricted habitats, as widely reported. However, as subterranean species with a relatively short divergence time from their above-ground relatives, Mandarin voles (Lasiopodomys mandarinus) have been the subject of limited research regarding their visual characteristics, and potential parallels in their visual system's environment-induced changes remain unclear. We systematically analyzed the visual system of Mandarin voles, using their above-ground sister species Brandt

Meiosis in Hybrids: Looking for the Order in Disorder.

BACKGROUND: The study of gametogenesis in hybrids between intraspecific chromosomal forms or distinct species is mainly aimed at identifying the successful outcome of the process to produce balanced, viable gametes. At the same time, deviations from typical meiotic progression patterns may provide a pivotal mechanism for speciation. SUMMARY: The long history of studying the process of gametogenesis and the development of methodological approaches have helped clarify the cytological and molecular processes that occur during meiosis. Since the early 1980s, Prof. Oxana Kolomiets has been studyin

Retrotransposon involves in photoperiodic spermatogenesis in Brandt's voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii) by co-transcription with flagellar genes.

Photoperiod is a pivotal factor in affecting spermatogenesis in seasonal-breeding animals. Transposable elements have regulatory functions during spermatogenesis. However, whether it also functions in photoperiodic spermatogenesis in seasonal breeding animals is unknown. To explore this, we first annotated 5,501,822 transposons in the whole genome of Brandt's voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii), and revealed that LINEs were the most abundant, comprising 16.61 % of the genome. Following closely, SINEs accounted for 10.13 %, LTRs for 7.54 %, and DNA transposons for 0.70 %. Subsequently, we exposed mal

Nephropathia Epidemica Caused by Puumala Virus in Bank Voles, Scania, Southern Sweden.

In 2018, a local case of nephropathia epidemica was reported in Scania, southern Sweden, more than 500 km south of the previously known presence of human hantavirus infections in Sweden. Another case emerged in the same area in 2020. To investigate the zoonotic origin of those cases, we trapped rodents in Ballingslöv, Norra Sandby, and Sörby in southern Sweden during 2020‒2021. We found Puumala virus (PUUV) in lung tissues from 9 of 74 Myodes glareolus bank voles by screening tissues using a hantavirus pan-large segment reverse transcription PCR. Genetic analysis revealed that the PUUV strains

Anti-prion drugs do not improve survival in novel knock-in models of inherited prion disease.

Prion diseases uniquely manifest in three distinct forms: inherited, sporadic, and infectious. Wild-type prions are responsible for the sporadic and infectious versions, while mutant prions cause inherited variants like fatal familial insomnia (FFI) and familial Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (fCJD). Although some drugs can prolong prion incubation times up to four-fold in rodent models of infectious prion diseases, no effective treatments for FFI and fCJD have been found. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of various anti-prion drugs on newly-developed knock-in mouse models for FFI and fCJD.

A fatal case of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Kursk Region, Russia, caused by a novel Puumala virus clade.

Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is the most widespread natural-focal human disease in the Russian Federation. In this study, we report virological assessment of a fatal case of HFRS-PUUV (Puumala virus) in the Kursk Region. The infection caused severe multiorgan failure and the maximum viral load was detected in the tissue of the spleen. Viral sequences were obtained from the patient's autopsy material and lung tissues of bank voles captured in the region. These sequences formed a new clade in the PUUV phylogenetic tree, an outgroup to all known Russian (RUS) lineage sequences. O

Nlp enhances biofilm formation by Yersinia pestis biovar microtus.

Biofilms formed by Yersinia pestis are able to attach to and block flea's proventriculus, which stimulates the transmission of this pathogen from fleas to mammals. In this study, we found that Nlp (YP1143) enhanced biofilm formation by Y. pestis and had regulatory effects on biofilm-associated genes at the transcriptional level. Phenotypic assays, including colony morphology assay, crystal violet staining, and Caenorhabditis elegans biofilm assay, disclosed that Nlp strongly promoted biofilm formation by Y. pestis. Further gene regulation assays showed that Nlp stimulated the expression of hms

Apical Elongation of Molar Teeth in Captive Microtus Voles.

Molar apical elongation (MAE) was the leading cause for euthanasia or death in a captive breeding colony of endangered Amargosa voles ( Microtus californicus scirpensis). Clinical signs included ocular discharge, abnormal mastication, dyspnea, abnormal mentation, weight loss, and death. Although the severity varied, all molars in all quadrants were affected. When severe, the overgrown molar reserve crown and apex protruded into the nasal meatuses, the orbit, the calvarial vault and through the ventral margin of the mandible. Overall prevalence in the colony was 63% (92/146 voles) and increased

[Comparative analysis of phospholipid composition in erythrocytes of mouse-like rodents of different species].

Comparative analysis of phospholipid quantitative composition of blood erythrocytes has been performed in white (laboratory mice and rats) and wild (tundra voles) mouse-like rodents. A non-characteristic of mammals low relative content of sphingomyelin is revealed in erythrocyte phospholipids in tundra voles. A hypothesis is put forward that the unique composition of erythrocyte lipids is a peculiar evolutionary developed strategy of adaptation aimed at survival under condition of constant circulation of agents of leptospirosis in populations of this species.

Fox defecation behaviour in relation to spatial distribution of voles in an urbanised area: An increasing risk of transmission of Echinococcus multilocularis?

Urbanisation of alveolar echinococcosis is a new phenomenon that has been highlighted during the last few decades. It has thus become necessary to understand the dynamics of transmission of Echinococcus multilocularis in urbanised areas. Spatial heterogeneity of infection by E. multilocularis has been explained as the result of a multifactorial dependence of the transmission in which the factors depend on the scale of the investigation. The aim of this study was to assess, in an urbanised area, the effect of such environmental factors as season, habitat type and the level of urbanisation, on t

Prevalence of Giardia and Cryptosporidium in muskrats in northeastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. are intestinal parasites that affect humans and animals throughout the world. Although infection with Giardia spp. is usually self-limiting, some cases result in mild to severe enteritis. Giardiasis can be treated with modern drugs. The increasing incidence of well-documented outbreaks of Cryptosporidiosis has resulted in a growing awareness of the danger of this infection. In this study, the authors examined beavers and muskrats to determine their role as reservoir hosts in the spread of these two pathogens. The authors obtained fecal samples from trapped
