Onchocerca supernatant (OS) was prepared by a technique permitting live microfilariae to migrate from nodule tissue through agar gel into sterile Hanks balanced salt/Penicillin-Streptomycin solution where they metabolized. The OS, after dialysis, was passed through Seitz viral filter and either concentrated or lyophilized. Using rabbit antiserum in immunodiffusion and immunoelectrophoresis tests, microfilariae proteins and also human protein were detected in out OS. No common antigens were found between this and somatic extracts of Loa loa, O. gutturosa, O. volvulus, L. carinii, D. immittis an

An antigen (LMS) prepared from Leishmania major-like promastigotes was used in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the diagnosis of human and dog visceral leishmaniasis. The results were compared with those from the indirect immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT). A total of 1822 canine sera were tested, including sera from dogs with visceral leishmaniasis, transmissible venereal tumors, ehrlichiosis, rickettsiosis, or Chagas' disease and sera from healthy dogs. The antigen was also tested with 227 samples of human sera, including sera from patients with visceral, cutaneous, or di

In 1994, prior to the Project of Development of the Plain of Antananarivo, an epidemiological survey was conducted in primary schools to assess the level of schistosomiasis. The results of stool examination by the Kato-Katz method demonstrated a prevalence of 4.3% among 6,169 randomized schoolchildren. The most infected four villages are located close the Mamba river. In 1999, after the realization of the project, another study had been done in the same Public Primary School to evaluate the evolution of schistosomiasis endemicity. 5,222 randomized pupils aged 5 to 16 years old took part in the

Ascaridia galli infection models use eggs isolated from chicken excreta, worm uteri and worms cultured in artificial media. The aim of this study was to compare the infectivity of A. galli eggs isolated from these sources under two infection regimens. A 3 × 2 factorial arrangement was employed to test the infectivity of A. galli eggs from the three sources and two modes of infection (single or trickle infection). One hundred and fifty-six Isa-Brown one day-old cockerels randomly assigned to the six treatment groups (n = 26) were orally infected with embryonated A. galli eggs obtained from the

Anthelmintic resistance in livestock animals has been spreading across the world in prevalence and severity. As a result, researchers are exploring alternative strategies to combat this issue, and one promising avenue is the utilization of medicinal plants. This study aims to investigate the anthelmintic efficacy of the crude ethanolic extract (CEE) derived from the leaves of Juglans regia against one of the most detrimental nematode parasites affecting poultry, namely Ascaridia galli (A. galli). For the in vitro studies, adult A. galli worms were collected from the naturally infected chickens

Ascaridia galli causes weight loss, emaciation, anemia, decreased egg production, and sometimes, intestinal obstruction and death in birds, leading to economic losses in the poultry industry. This research aimed to record the occurrence of A. galli in free-range chickens at farmers' houses in three villages in Ashmoun City, Minoufiya Governorate, Egypt. Additionally, molecular characterization was conducted using internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS-1) region PCR and sequence analysis. A total of 570 chickens from 570 small flocks, each ranging in size from 10 to 20 free-range chickens, were inv

Eggs in the infective stage of the chicken nematode Ascaridia galli are often required for in vivo and in vitro studies on this parasite. The reliability of any artificial A. galli infection depends on the viability and embryonation capacity of A. galli eggs. The aim of this study was to determine ideal storage conditions for maximising the viability of A. galli eggs and maintaining viability for the longest period. A 2 × 2 × 3 × 5 factorial experimental design was employed to investigate the effects of storage temperature (4°C or 26°C), storage condition (aerobic or anaerobic), storage medium

Ascaridia galli, a highly prevalent intestinal parasite of poultry globally, poses significant challenges to prevention and control strategies in poultry industry due to its increasing resistance to anthelmintic. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the regulatory effects of Lactobacillus johnsonii on growth performance and intestinal health of broilers infected with A. galli. In this study, 80 one-day-old broilers were randomly assigned to a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments, which included two levels of L. johnsonii (0 or 1 × 10⁹ CFU/mL) and two infection statuses (A. galli chal

Data on occurrence of intestinal parasites among resident and entering populations in a South Carolina institution for mentally retarded persons were examined. Following an eradication effort in 1973 for Trichuris trichiura, the prevalence of this parasite remained below 5 percent for the resident population, with the exception of 1974 and 1975, when small numbers of stool examinations occurred. Significantly higher proportions of the entering population, compared to the residents, harbored T. trichiura, Ascaris lumbricoides, Giardia lamblia, and Entamoeba histolytica. We concluded that annual

Ascaridia galli is a major gastrointestinal nematode of poultry that causes significant economic losses worldwide. In this study, we characterized a new isolate, A. galli AgSC_2025, obtained from Xichuan black-bone chickens in China, using an integrative approach by combining morphology, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and mitogenomics and then its complete developmental changes in eggs-the primary source of infection-was also documented using a high-resolution auto-microscopic imaging. The adult worms exhibited diagnostic characteristics of A. galli, including three distinct lips and a spe

To date the diagnosis of abdominal angiostrongyliasis (AA) depends on the histological identification of Angiostrongylus costaricensis (AC) in surgical specimens. However, microscopic evaluation is time consuming and often fails in identifying the parasite. We tested whether PCR might help in the diagnosis of AA by identifying parasite DNA in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue. We used primers based on DNA from Angiostrongilus cantonensis. Four groups of FFPE intestinal tissue were tested: (1) confirmed cases (n = 20), in which AC structures were present in the target tissue; (2) p

In the second part of their review the authors focus on palaeopathological studies, performed in mummified tissues, with reference to infectious diseases. The analysis of samples obtained from both natural and artificial mummies may provide, in some favourable events, a more complete knowledge of these findings in comparison to information obtained from only comprehensive examination of the skeleton. The acquired data enable us to understand not only the diseases which afflicted mankind, but also dietary and hygiene conditions of ancient populations. We report knowledge acquired regarding some

Ascaridia galli is one of the most prevalent intestinal nematodes of domesticated chickens and the primary cause of avian ascaridiasis, a globally important disease in poultry production. Infection rates often reach 70-90 % in free-range systems due to its direct life cycle and efficient environmental transmission. Despite its impact, the molecular mechanisms governing A. galli host-parasite interactions remain poorly understood. A. galli belongs to Clade III nematodes, which include several species of major veterinary importance. Comparative genomic studies Clade III-nematodes have revealed e

The present study analyzed gastrointestinal helminth communities in 265 wild pigeons (Columba livia) living in the municipalities of São Paulo and Tatuí, state of São Paulo, Brazil, over a one-year period. The birds were caught next to grain storage warehouses and were necropsied. A total of 790 parasites comprising one nematode species and one cestode genus were recovered from 110 pigeons, thus yielding an overall prevalence of 41.5%, mean intensity of infection of 7.2 ± 1.6 (range 1-144) and discrepancy index of 0.855. Only 15 pigeons (5.7%) presented mixed infection. The helminths isolated

Data from seven experiments with Ascaridia galli-infected chickens have been considered. The results of treatment with neutral and basic copper, zinc and copper-zinc salts and inorganic and organic manganese compounds have been compared. An optimal therapy, containing a pure Cu basic salt (Cu2(OH)3Cl) and an organic Mn compound (2Gly.MnCl2.2H2O), is proposed to correct mineral deficiencies and pathological symptoms and to ensure lower mortality and higher gains in body weight. A mathematical model has been proposed for the growth of a healthy chicken. The relative rates for two growth stages h
