Pseudallescheria boydii with Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus terreus in a Critically Ill Hematopoietic Stem Cell Recipient with ARDS.

Pseudallescheria boydii is a fungal organism known to affect immunocompromised patients. This organism is known to cause, in severe cases, invasive infection of various organs such as the central nervous, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems. We report an unusual case of pulmonary P. boydii pneumonia in an immunocompromised critically ill patient with a co-infection of Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus terreus with ARDS. This case highlights the importance of a high index of suspicion for superimposed fungal infections in patients who are critically ill and immunocompromised. Uncommon f

[Development of infection with Aspergillus flavus in woman being treated for allergic pulmonary Aspergillosis caused by Aspergillus fumigatus].

A 36-year-old woman who raised plants in a large greenhouse came to our hospital because of a cough and purulent sputum. A chest X-ray film showed infiltrative shadows in the left middle lung field. Aspergillus fumigatus was isolated from samples of sputum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid obtained from the left B5. Biopsy specimens revealed hyphae elements of aspergillus species and eosinophils in a plug of viscous material. Also, eosinophils and lymphocytes had infiltrated through bronchial epithelium without aspergillus species. She was given a diagnosis of allergic aspergillosis caused by A

Macroscopic aspergillus recognition using YOLO-CSM.

Aspergillus detection is of great significance in medical diagnosis and microbiological analysis. However, due to the complex morphology of Aspergillus, its subtle structural characteristics, the presence of rare strains, and partial occlusion in samples, traditional detection methods often fail to achieve high accuracy. To address these challenges, this study incorporates three innovative modules-CGNet, Shape-IoU, and MSCA-into the YOLOv12 framework to construct an efficient Aspergillus detection model. CGNet enhances the fusion and representation of complex structural features; Shape-IoU int

Aspergillus Mycotoxins: The Major Food Contaminants.

Mycotoxins, a category of fungal secondary metabolites, frequently contaminate food products and pose a severe threat to human health. Aspergillus, a genus of fungi, is capable of producing mycotoxins, with aflatoxins (AFs) and ochratoxins being its principal types. Aspergillus mycotoxins can contaminate a wide range of crops and their derivatives, such as maize, wheat, rice, minor cereals, and peanuts, thereby threatening food and feed safety. In the paper, the related biosynthesis genes and multifaceted biosynthesis pathways of these mycotoxins are first discussed in detail, and elucidated s

Aspergillus flavus Keratitis After Penetrating Keratoplasty.

Fungal keratitis is a rare but severe complication following penetrating keratoplasty (PKP). We report the clinical course, rapid deterioration, and management of a case of Aspergillus flavus keratitis occurring three months after PKP. A 69-year-old woman with Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy developed pseudophakic bullous keratopathy following cataract surgery. She underwent an uneventful PKP. At two months postoperatively, the graft remained clear with a visual acuity of 2/10. Three months after keratoplasty, the patient presented with pain, redness, mucopurulent discharge, and decreased vision.

Aspergillus terreus panophthalmitis with orbital cellulitis.

An eleven year old male reported a ten-day history of unilateral pain, redness, and sudden loss of vision. Ophthalmic examination revealed panophthalmitis that did not respond to conventional intravenous antibiotics, and systemic deterioration raised suspicion of a fungal aetiology. However, the worsening of the ocular condition from panophthalmitis to orbital cellulitis upon commencement of amphotericin B suggests the presence of a fastidious microorganism. Aspergillus terreus was isolated from a vitreous tap sample and responded well to intravenous voriconazole, exhibiting a distinct antimic

Aspergillus fumigatus Postoperative Fasciitis and Peritonitis.

A 67 year-old male was admitted in the ICU because of multi-organ failure due to sepsis secondary to Fournier's gangrene. He had sustained radical prostatectomy in the last 48 hours. Peritoneal fluid and fatty tissue biopsies grew Aspergillus Fumigatus without concomitant pulmonary involvement. Postoperative acquisition via exogenous and endogenous routes is discussed, as this nosocomial entity is very rarely reported apart from peritoneal dialysis, especially in non-immunosuppressed patients.

Antibacterial Drimane Sesquiterpenes from Aspergillus ustus.

Bioactivity-guided isolation of Aspergillus ustus led to the discovery of five new drimane sesquiterpenes, named ustusal A, ustusolate F and G, and ustusoic acid A and B, 1-5 respectively. Structural elucidation of these fungal terpenes relied on 1D and 2D NMR techniques, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and chiroptical properties. Their relative configurations were determined by NMR methods, while the absolute configurations were established using comparative analyses of computed and experimental NMR chemical shifts and ECD spectra. The sesquiterpenes exhibited weak activity against the cli

Aspergillus penicillioides Speg. Implicated in Keratomycosis.

The aim of the study was mycological examination of ulcerated corneal tissues from an ophthalmic patient. Tissue fragments were analyzed on potato-glucose agar (PDA) and maltose (MA) (Difco) media using standard laboratory techniques. Cultures were identified using classical and molecular methods. Macro- and microscopic colony morphology was characteristic of fungi from the genus Aspergillus (restricted growth series), most probably Aspergillus penicillioides Speg. Molecular analysis of the following rDNA regions: ITS1, ITS2, 5.8S, 28S rDNA, LSU and β-tubulin were carried out for the isolates

Disseminated Mucormycosis with Positive Aspergillus Galactomannan.

We describe a case of disseminated mucormycosis (Apophysomyces elegans) diagnosed on autopsy, in a man who had been working in construction with undiagnosed neutropenia from hairy-cell leukemia, which is rarely associated with invasive mold infections. Galactomannan values in both blood and bronchoalveolar lavage were strongly positive. There is an unmet need for accurate noninvasive fungal diagnostic tests. Detailed history, including occupational exposures, can be more informative than laboratory workup.

Aspergillus serology: Have we arrived yet?

Aspergillosis presents in various clinical forms, among them chronic pulmonary aspergillosis, which is a spectrum of disease entities including aspergilloma, chronic cavitary pulmonary aspergillosis, and chronic fibrosing pulmonary aspergillosis. Aspergillus also contributes to fungal allergy and sensitization. Analysis of the immune response to Aspergillus and its antigens is an integral part of the diagnosis of these diseases. Over the past half century, the techniques used to determine antibody titers have evolved from testing for precipitating and agglutinating antibodies by agar gel doubl

Molecular diagnosis of Aspergillus fumigatus endocarditis.

A 66-year-old male with ischaemic cardiomyopathy and chronic lymphocytic leukemia developed signs of severe systemic inflammatory response syndrome. Serial blood cultures were negative and a SeptiFast test detected the presence of Aspergillus fumigatus DNA. Afterwards, detection of galactomannan and 1,3-β-D-glucan showed a positive result. Autopsy revealed the presence of branched fungal structures suggestive of Aspergillus.

[Putative virulence factors of Aspergillus species].

Members of the genus Aspergillus are filamentous, ubiquitous fungi found in nature. Aspergillus species can cause clinical settings in man, such as opportunistic infections, allergic states and toxicoses. Immunosuppression is the major factor predisposing to development of opportunistic mycoses. To invade the host, Aspergillus species must be able to adhere to and penetrate the host tissues. Much work has focused on the search for virulence determinants that allow the establishment of the fungus within the host. Adhesins, pigment production, toxic metabolites and extracellular enzymes are thou

Medical management of Aspergillus flavus endocarditis.

An 11-year-old boy underwent a matched unrelated bone marrow transplant for refractory acute myeloid leukemia. He developed invasive aspergillus pneumonia and endocarditis post-transplant. The fungal endocarditis was successfully eradicated with liposomal amphotericin at the dose of 10 mg/kg/day. Surgical intervention was not required and no serious side effects of liposomal amphotericin were observed at this dose.
