Endo-1,4-beta-xylanase B from Aspergillus cf. niger BCC14405 isolated in Thailand: purification, characterization and gene isolation.

During the screening of xylanolytic enzymes from locally isolated fungi, one strain BCC14405, exhibited high enzyme activity with thermostability. This fugal strain was identified as Aspergillus cf. niger based on its morphological characteristics and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences. An enzyme with xylanolytic activity from BCC14405 was later purified and characterized. It was found to have a molecular mass of ca. 21 kDa, an optimal pH of 5.0, and an optimal temperature of 55 degrees C. When tested using xylan from birchwood, it showed K(m) and V(max) values of 8.9 mg/ml and 11,100

Biotransformation of hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-tiazine catalyzed by a NAD(P)H: nitrate oxidoreductase from Aspergillus niger.

Hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) can be efficiently mineralized with anaerobic domestic sludge, but the initial enzymatic processes involved in its transformation are unknown. To test the hypothesis that the initial reaction involves reduction of nitro group(s), we designed experiments to test the ability of a nitrate reductase (EC 1.6.6.2) to catalyze the initial reaction leading to ring cleavage and subsequent decomposition. A nitrate reductase from Aspergillus niger catalyzed the biotransformation of RDX most effectively at pH 7.0 and 30 degrees C under anaerobic conditions usi

Evaluation of mycoparasitic Trichoderma atroviride and entomopathogenic Aspergillus niger as potential bioinsecticides against the dengue vector, Aedes aegypti.

INTRODUCTION: Over the past three decades, dengue disease incidence has significantly increased worldwide, creating serious public health concerns. The principal mosquito vector, Aedes aegypti, exhibits resistance to commonly used insecticides, reducing the efficacy of vector control measures. Thus, the necessity for alternate strategies is critical. Using bioinsecticides such as entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) is one such strategy. This study details the evaluation of mycoparasitic Trichoderma atroviride and entomopathogenic Aspergillus niger against pyrethroid-resistant and pyrethroid-susceptib

Absorption studies show that phytase from Aspergillus niger significantly increases iron and zinc bioavailability from phytate-rich foods.

BACKGROUND: Iron and zinc deficiency are major public health problems affecting many parts of the world, including Southeast Asia. Infants, young children, and women of reproductive age are particularly vulnerable due to their high requirements. Even though iron and zinc are present in significant amounts in the plant-based diets typically consumed in developing countries, their bioavailability is low due to high levels of absorption inhibitors such as phytate. Phytase has been used in animal nutrition for decades to improve the bioavailability of certain minerals in feed. OBJECTIVE: To show

Atypical fingernail onychomycosis due to Aspergillus niger in a healthy adult: an unusual presentation of a non-dermatophyte mold infection.

BACKGROUND: Onychomycosis is commonly caused by dermatophytes, but nondermatophytic molds (NDMs) are increasingly recognized, even in immunocompetent individuals. These infections often present atypically, leading to delayed diagnosis. NDMs require accurate identification, as they may not respond to standard antifungal treatments used for dermatophyte infections. CASE REPORT: An immunocompetent man in his 40s presented with discoloration of a single right index fingernail. He reported no trauma, systemic illness, or immunosuppressive therapy. Examination revealed brown-black nail discoloration

Determination of Biodegradation Potential of Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, and Acremonium sclerotigenum on Polyethylene, Polyethylene Terephthalate, and Polystyrene Microplastics.

Plastics are used widely in almost every field of life, but their synthetic and persistent nature makes them harmful for the environment. The aim of this research was to evaluate the degradation abilities of Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, and Acremonium sclerotigenum on microplastics (MPs). MP pieces of 4 ± 1 mm, including polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polystyrene, were incubated with fungal inoculums for 30 days. The degradation of treated MPs was determined by biofilm formation, weight loss, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform analyses. The results

A study of P release from Fe-P and Ca-P via the organic acids secreted by Aspergillus niger.

Phosphate solubilizing fungi (PSF) have been widely applied to dissolve insoluble phosphates (IPs). However, the PSF usually demonstrates a different phosphate solubilizing capacity for various IPs. This study explored the mechanisms of Aspergillus niger for the dissolution of ferric phosphate (FePO4, Fe-P), and tricalcium phosphate (Ca3[PO4]2, Ca-P) regarding the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. Aspergillus niger has higher phosphorus (P) content released from Ca-P, reached the maximum value of 861 mg/L after seven days of incubation, compared with the 169 mg/L from Fe-P. Oxalic acid promoted

Cerebral vasculitis caused by Talaromyces marneffei and Aspergillus niger in a HIV-positive patient: a case report and literature review.

Cerebral vasculitis is a long-standing but flourishing and fadeless research topic. Infections are a frequent cause of cerebral vasculitis, vital to diagnose due to involvement of specific anti-infection treatments. A 65-year-old man visited the hospital for his neurological symptoms without obvious inducements. After admission, radiological examination and comprehensive conventional microbiological tests (CMTs) revealed suspected intracranial infectious vasculitis. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction further confirmed that his cere

Polymerase chain reaction aids in the diagnosis of an unusual case of Aspergillus niger endocarditis in a patient with acute myeloid leukaemia.

Endocarditis secondary to Aspergillus niger has not been described in a leukaemic patient. We describe a case of A. niger endocarditis in a patient with acute myeloid leukaemia and refractory fever. The microbiological cause of his endocarditis was initially misdiagnosed because he fulfilled the Duke criteria for enterococcal endocarditis. A polymerase chain reaction test utilizing pan-fungal primers detected a product from an Aspergillus sp. The DNA was subsequently sequenced and was found to have 100% homology with A. niger. A postmortem revealed fungal endocarditis secondary to disseminated

Genome-informed characterization and targeted mycotoxin screening of an Aspergillus niger starter candidate for hawk tea solid-state fermentation.

Defined fungal starters can improve the controllability of plant-based solid-state fermentation, but candidate strains require strain-level genomic characterization and condition-specific product screening. We characterized an Aspergillus niger starter candidate used for hawk tea (Machilus rehderi) fermentation by whole-genome sequencing, comparative genomics, functional annotation, secondary-metabolite genome mining, and targeted HPLC-FLD analysis. The 35.98-Mb assembly comprised nine contigs and contained 12,409 protein-coding genes. BUSCO analysis with eurotiales_odb12.2 recovered 98.2% com

Secondary pulmonary infection by Fusarium solani and Aspergillus niger during systemic steroid treatment for COVID-19: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated invasive pulmonary aspergillosis presents a diagnostic challenge due to its non-specific clinical/ imaging features, as well as the fact that the proposed clinically diagnostic algorithms do not necessarily apply to COVID-19 patients. In addition, Fusarium spp. is a rare cause of opportunistic life-threatening fungal infections. Disseminated Fusarium infection in an immunocompromised host is intractable, with a high likelihood of resulting mortality. To our knowledge, this is the first case of secondary pulmonary infection by Fusarium

A case of invasive Aspergillus niger spondylodiscitis with epidural abscess following COVID-19 infection in an immunocompromised host with literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Aspergillosis is defined as an opportunistic infection that may spread hematogenously. COVID-19 infection has not been reported as a direct cause or risk factor. Its treatment (e.g. corticosteroids) significantly increases the risk for invasive infections. The respiratory system remains the main target, and the Aspergillus fumigatus is the most responsible subtype. Other species like Aspergillus (A) flavus, A. niger, and A. nidulans follow in frequency. Other included sites are the skeletal muscular system and the entire spine leading to spondylodiscitis. New insight into the disinfection mechanism of Fusarium monoliforme and Aspergillus niger by TiO2 photocatalyst under low intensity UVA light.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalytic reaction has great potential for the disinfection of harmful pathogens. However, the disinfection mechanisms of TiO2 photocatalysis are not yet well-known for fungi and protozoa. In this work, the photocatalytic disinfection mechanism of Fusarium monoliforme and Aspergillus niger under low intensity UVA light (365nm, <10W/m2) was studied at the ultrastructural level. Photocatalytic treatments showed that the photocatalytic oxidation of 10% TiO2 based paint was efficacious in the complete disinfection of F. monoliforme under low intensity UVA light. No gro
