Learning and switching between stimulus-saccade associations in Parkinson's disease.

Making flexible associations between what we see and what we do is important for many everyday tasks. Previous work in patients with focal lesions has shown that the control of saccadic eye movements in such contexts relies on a network of areas in the frontal cerebral cortex. These regions are reciprocally connected with structures in the basal ganglia although the contribution of these sub-cortical structures to oculomotor control in complex tasks is not well understood. We report the performance of patients with idiopathic Parkinsons disease (PDs) in a test which required learning and switc

Variation in brain regions associated with fear and learning in contrasting climates.

In environments where resources are difficult to obtain and enhanced cognitive capabilities might be adaptive, brain structures associated with cognitive traits may also be enhanced. In our previous studies, we documented a clear and significant relationship among environmental conditions, memory and hippocampal structure using ten populations of black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) over a large geographic range. In addition, focusing on just the two populations from the geographical extremes of our large-scale comparison, Alaska and Kansas, we found enhanced problem-solving capabili

On a basal ganglia role in learning and rehearsing visual-motor associations.

Fronto-striatal circuitry interacts with the midbrain dopaminergic system to mediate the learning of stimulus-response associations, and these associations often guide everyday actions, but the precise role of these circuits in forming and consolidating rules remains uncertain. A means to examine basal ganglia circuit contributions to associative motor learning is to examine these process in a lesion model system, such as Parkinson's disease (PD), a basal ganglia disorder characterized by the loss of dopamine neurons. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to compare brain activat

GABAA receptor RDL inhibits Drosophila olfactory associative learning.

In both mammals and insects, neurons involved in learning are strongly modulated by the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. The GABAA receptor, resistance to dieldrin (Rdl), is highly expressed in the Drosophila mushroom bodies (MBs), a group of neurons playing essential roles in insect olfactory learning. Flies with increased or decreased expression of Rdl in the MBs were generated. Olfactory associative learning tests showed that Rdl overexpression impaired memory acquisition but not memory stability. This learning defect was due to disrupting the physiological state of the adult MB neurons ra

Coherence of gamma-band EEG activity as a basis for associative learning.

Different regions of the brain must communicate with each other to provide the basis for the integration of sensory information, sensory-motor coordination and many other functions that are critical for learning, memory, information processing, perception and the behaviour of organisms. Hebb suggested that this is accomplished by the formation of assemblies of cells whose synaptic linkages are strengthened whenever the cells are activated or 'ignited' synchronously. Hebb's seminal concept has intrigued investigators since its formulation, but the technology to demonstrate its existence had bee

The relevance of associative learning pathways in the development of obsessive-compulsive washing.

The relevance of associative learning in the development of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) was investigated in a group of 23 OCD patients whose main concern was washing and 23 age and sex matched control subjects who did not have OCD. OC washers completed an origins instrument based on Menzies and Clarke's (1993, Behaviour Research and Therapy, 31, 355-365) Origins Questionnaire (OQ) for the phobic disorders. Control subjects completed a modified version of this measure designed to give a comprehensive picture of their experiences with relevant contamination-related stimuli. In general, t

Update of machine learning for ultrasound diagnosis of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease: a bright future for deep learning.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most common liver disease and the burden is increasing around the world. Ultrasound diagnosis of MASLD is the preferred method due to its convenience, absence of radiation, and high accuracy. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in MASLD diagnosis has been explored across electronic medical records, laboratory tests, ultrasound and radiographic imaging, and liver histopathological data. Notably, AI's application in ultrasound diagnosis has garnered significant attention. Deep learning (DL), known for its excepti

SR-TWAS: leveraging multiple reference panels to improve transcriptome-wide association study power by ensemble machine learning.

Multiple reference panels of a given tissue or multiple tissues often exist, and multiple regression methods could be used for training gene expression imputation models for transcriptome-wide association studies (TWAS). To leverage expression imputation models (i.e., base models) trained with multiple reference panels, regression methods, and tissues, we develop a Stacked Regression based TWAS (SR-TWAS) tool which can obtain optimal linear combinations of base models for a given validation transcriptomic dataset. Both simulation and real studies show that SR-TWAS improves power, due to increa

A novel classification framework for genome-wide association study of whole brain MRI images using deep learning.

Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have been widely applied in the neuroimaging field to discover genetic variants associated with brain-related traits. So far, almost all GWASs conducted in neuroimaging genetics are performed on univariate quantitative features summarized from brain images. On the other hand, powerful deep learning technologies have dramatically improved our ability to classify images. In this study, we proposed and implemented a novel machine learning strategy for systematically identifying genetic variants that lead to detectable nuances on Magnetic Resonance Images (M
