Prevalence of the crayfish plague pathogen Aphanomyces astaci in invasive American crayfishes in the Czech Republic.

In Central Europe invasive North American crayfishes are carriers of the oomycete Aphanomyces astaci, which causes crayfish plague. This lethal disease currently represents one of the major threats to native European crayfishes. We used molecular methods-species--specific amplification and sequencing of the pathogen DNA--to investigate the prevalence of individuals latently infected with A. astaci in 28 populations of two invasive American crayfish species (6 of the signal crayfish [Pacifastacus leniusculus] and 22 of the spiny-cheek crayfish [Orconectes limosus]) in the Czech Republic. The pa

Incomes, attitudes, and occurrences of invasive species: an application to signal crayfish in Sweden.

This article analyzes and carries out an econometric test of the explanatory power of economic and attitude variables for occurrences of the nonnative signal crayfish in Swedish waters. Signal crayfish are a carrier of plague which threatens the native noble crayfish with extinction. Crayfish are associated with recreational and cultural traditions in Sweden, which may run against environmental preferences for preserving native species. Econometric analysis is carried out using panel data at the municipality level with economic factors and attitudes as explanatory variables, which are derived

Glutamatergic postsynaptic block by Pamphobeteus spider venoms in crayfish.

The effects of toxins from venom glands of two south american spiders (Pamphobeteus platyomma and P. soracabae) on glutamatergic excitatory synaptic transmission were studied in the neuromuscular junction of the opener muscle of crayfish. The toxins selectively and reversibly blocked both excitatory postsynaptic currents and potentials in a dose-dependent manner. They also reversibly abolished glutamate-induced postsynaptic membrane depolarization. They had no effect on resting postsynaptic membrane conductance nor on postsynaptic voltage-gated currents. The synaptic facilitation and the frequ

Control of schistosome-transmitting snails in Kenya by the North American crayfish Procambarus clarkii.

Snail-transmitted trematode parasites such as schistosomes and liver flukes assume considerable medical and veterinary significance in tropical Africa. We have observed a strong negative association between the presence of medically important pulmonate snails and the crayfish Procambarus clarkii in freshwater habitats in Kenya. This crayfish, introduced into Kenya around 1970, readily consumes these snails in the laboratory. Field enclosure experiments indicate that crayfish exert a significant negative impact on the abundance of Biomphalaria pfeifferi, the intermediate host of the human blood

Sedative effects and stress-alleviating capabilities of four dietary plant-derived compounds on Procambarus clarkii.

In intensive aquaculture, post-larval Procambarus clarkii (the red swamp crayfish) are highly susceptible to stress — with oxidative stress as the primary form — induced by long-distance transport and high-density rearing, leading to substantial mortality and economic losses. Meanwhile, illegal use of diazepam to alleviate stress causes drug residues, threatening the safety of aquatic products. To address these industry challenges, this study selected four plant-derived compounds (isolated from plants) — gastrodin, matrine, paeonol, and eucalyptol — some of which have been proven to have sedat

Dopaminergic system disruption induced by envrionmentally-realistic glyphosate leads to behavioral alteration in crayfish, Procambarus clarkii.

Glyphosate, a widely used herbicide, is frequently detected in freshwater systems, posing potential risks to non-target aquatic species. This study investigates the effects of environmentally realistic glyphosate concentrations (0.1, 1, and 10 µg/L) on the behavior, dopamine regulation, and oxidative stress in the red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii), a key species in freshwater ecosystems and also an important commercial species in China. Crayfish were exposed to glyphosate-based herbicide (Roundup®, 41 % glyphosate) for two weeks, after which behavioral changes, dopamine levels, dopamine

Mercury speciation, distribution, and bioaccumulation in a river catchment impacted by compact fluorescent lamp manufactures.

The influence from the manufacturing of compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) on mercury (Hg) speciation and distribution in river catchments nearby a typical CFL manufacturing area in China was investigated. Water, sediment, river snail (Procambarus clarkii), and macrophyte (Paspalum distichum L.) samples were collected. Total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in water ranged from 1.06 to 268 ng · L(-1) and N.D. -2.14 ng · L(-1), respectively. MeHg was significantly positively correlated with THg in water. THg and MeHg in sediment ranged from 15.0 to 2480 and 0.06 to 1.85 ng · g(-1),

Influence of a chlor-alkali superfund site on mercury bioaccumulation in periphyton and low-trophic level fauna.

In Berlin, New Hampshire, USA, the Androscoggin River flows adjacent to a former chlor-alkali facility that is a US Environmental Protection Agency Superfund site and source of mercury (Hg) to the river. The present study was conducted to determine the fate and bioaccumulation of methylmercury (MeHg) to lower trophic-level taxa in the river. Surface sediment directly adjacent to the source showed significantly elevated MeHg (10-40× increase, mean ± standard deviation [SD]: 20.1 ± 24.8 ng g(-1) dry wt) and total mercury (THg; 10-30× increase, mean ± SD: 2045 ± 2669 ng g(-1) dry wt) compared wit

Promiscuous and reversible blocker of presynaptic calcium channels in frog and crayfish neuromuscular junctions from Phoneutria nigriventer spider venom.

Activation of esophageal mechanosensors excites neurons in and near the central nucleus of the solitary tract (NSTc). In turn, NSTc neurons coordinate the relaxation of the stomach [i.e., the receptive relaxation reflex (RRR)] by modulating the output of vagal efferent neurons of the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMN). The NSTc area contains neurons with diverse neurochemical phenotypes, including a large population of catecholaminergic and nitrergic neurons. The aim of the present study was to determine whether either one of these prominent neuronal phenotypes was involved in the RRR. Im

Broad antiviral activity in tissues of crustaceans.

Innate antiviral substances occur in vertebrates and may function as host defenses. Virus infections are common among invertebrates, but little is known about the ability of invertebrates to control viral infections. Pre-existing antiviral substances may be particularly important, since invertebrates lack the antiviral defense conferred by specific immunity. In our study, we found that tissue extracts of blue crab (Callinectes sapidus), shrimp (Penaeus setiferus), and crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) contained antiviral activities that inhibit a variety of DNA and RNA viruses, i.e. Sindbis virus

Action potential and sodium current in the slowly and rapidly adapting stretch receptor neurons of the crayfish (Astacus astacus).

Action potentials (APs) and sodium current from the slowly and the rapidly adapting stretch receptor neurons in the crayfish (Astacus astacus) were recorded with a two microelectrode voltage- and current-clamp technique. In the rapidly adapting neuron the APs had a duration of 3.2 +/- 0.2 ms (means +/- SE) and an amplitude of 55.2 +/- 1.5 mV. In the slowly adapting receptor neuron APs had a duration of 4.1 +/- 0.2 ms and an amplitude 79.9 +/- 2.0 mV. APs in the rapidly adapting neuron had a larger amplitude if they were recorded from the axon. In the rapidly adapting neuron adaptation of the i

Light and drug effects reveal three pathways for nitric oxide modulation of the first visual synaptic relay in the lamina ganglionaris.

The modulation of synaptic relay mechanisms in the visual pathway remains a significant area of investigation. Here, we explore the role of nitric oxide (NO) in the eyestalks of the Australian blue crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus, focusing on its relationship with light exposure and potential regulatory pathways involving NO promoters and inhibitors. NO levels in the eyestalks were assessed using the Griess technique under various light-dark cycles and different physiological parameters (size, weight and sex) of adult crayfish. We found a light-dependent modulation of NO concentration, with co

Dietary Myo-Inositol Improves Growth, Antioxidant and Immune Responses in Bisphenol S-Exposed Procambarus clarkii.

Bisphenol S (BPS) is an emerging environmental contaminant that can disrupt oxidative and immune homeostasis in aquatic organisms, whereas myo-inositol (MI) is a water-soluble nutrient involved in growth and cellular signaling. This study evaluated growth, hepatopancreatic biochemical indices, and stress-related gene transcription in crayfish fed 0 or 1000 mg/kg supplemental MI and chronically exposed to 0-10 µg/L BPS for 6 weeks. Compared with the control group, the BPS group had significantly lower weight gain rate (WGR), specific growth rate (SGR), molting frequency, antioxidant enzyme acti

Investigation regarding the physiological effects of cobalt on physiological functions in Drosophila, crayfish, and crab: Behavioral, cardiac, neural, and synaptic properties.

Cobalt, a metallic element found naturally in the earth's crust, is essential to survival. It is the active center of cobalamins such as vitamin B12 and is also a micronutrient for bacteria, algae, and fungi. The effects of cobalt (II) chloride (CoCl2), the inorganic form of cobalt, are dependent on the dosage. High dosage or chronic exposure to CoCl2 can have negative effects, such as carcinogenic properties, intoxication, and "beer drinker's cardiomyopathy." This investigation was designed to test the effects of acute, high-concentration in cobalt exposure on physiological functions in Droso

Improving knowledge on genotoxicity dynamics in somatic and germ cells of crayfish (Procambarus clarkii).

The harmful effects of pesticides can be extended beyond the exposure time scale. Appraisals combining exposure and long-term post-exposure periods appear as an unavoidable approach in pesticide risk assessment, thus allowing a better understanding of the real impact of agrochemicals in non-target organisms. This study aimed to evaluate the progression of genetic damage in somatic and germ tissues of the crayfish Procambarus clarkii, also seeking for gender-specificities, following exposure (7 days) to penoxsulam (23 μg L-1 ) and a post-exposure (70 days) period. The same approach was applied

Establishing a gold standard method for the detection of Cherax reovirus using reverse transcriptase, quantitative, polymerase chain reaction.

Cherax reovirus infects redclaw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) and it may be involved in mortalities between 5-20 % and stunting of up to 40 % of survivors. The sequence of the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase was used to develop a reverse transcription, quantitative, PCR (RT-qPCR) which was specific against seven other crustacean viruses (Athtab bunyavirus, Chequa iflavirus, Macrobrachium rosenbergii nodavirus, Gill-associated virus, Taura syndrome virus, White spot syndrome virus, and Penaeus stylirostris Penstylhamaparvovirus) although GAV produced a reaction that was easily separated by melt
