Transcriptomic evidence of erythropoietic adaptation from the International Space Station and from an Earth-based space analog.

Space anemia affects astronauts and the underlying molecular alterations remain unknown. We evaluated the response of erythropoiesis-modulating genes to spaceflight through the analysis of leukocyte transcriptomes from astronauts during long-duration spaceflight and from an Earth model of microgravity. Differential expression analysis identified 50 genes encoding ribosomal proteins with reduced expression at the transition to bed rest and increased during the bed rest phase; a similar trend was observed in astronauts. Additional genes associated with anemia (15 genes), erythrocyte maturation (

Potential Health Impacts, Treatments, and Countermeasures of Martian Dust on Future Human Space Exploration.

The challenges of human space exploration produce some of humanity's greatest technological and scientific advances, not excluding innovations in medicine. The microgravity environment causes a host of physiological changes, and exposure to dust on the Moon caused considerable pulmonary distress to astronauts during the Apollo missions. As the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and other organizations prepare for long-duration exploration missions to Mars, the hazards and consequences of the Martian surface need to be accounted for. This review investigates how substances analogous

Space sickness and fluid shifts: a hypothesis.

In a sample of 64 first-time Space Shuttle crew members, 9 preflight variables related to fluid, electrolyte, and cardiovascular status were previously found to be significantly related to space sickness. The nine variables are serum uric acid, red cell count, environmental temperature at the launch site, serum phosphate, urine osmolality, serum thyroxine, sitting systolic blood pressure, calculated blood volume, and serum chloride. Using discriminant analysis, these preflight variables were used to correctly classify the 64 astronauts according to their space sickness incidence (NOTSICK or SI

Feeding the cosmos: tackling personalized space nutrition and the leaky gut challenge.

Long-duration space missions pose serious challenges to astronaut nutrition and health due to the altered environment of Low Earth Orbit (LEO). This study examines the nutritional composition of crops grown in space, identifying deficiencies in key nutrients such as calcium and magnesium, along with variable antioxidant profiles. These imbalances may impact astronaut physiology, particularly bone health and immune function, and are potentially linked to altered gene expression pathways in microgravity. Emerging evidence also suggests increased intestinal permeability, referred as leaky gut syn

Temporal changes in the skin Malassezia microbiota of members of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE): A case study in Antarctica as a pseudo-space environment.

The International Space Station (ISS) is located approximately 400 km above the Earth. Astronauts staying at the ISS are under microgravity and are thus unable to bathe or shower; instead, they wash their bodies using wet tissues. For astronauts, skin hygiene management is important to maintain the quality of life during long-term stays on the ISS. In Antarctica, members of a Japanese geological investigation team negotiate their way over land using snowmobiles. During their 3-month stay, they are subject to a "pseudo-space" environment similar to that experienced by ISS astronauts, including

Relationship between stroke volume and sympathetic nerve activity: new insights about autonomic mechanisms of syncope.

Head-up tilt table experiments conducted in astronauts prior to and immediately after the NASA Neurolab Space Mission (STS-90) revealed that a reduction in stroke volume induced by moving from the supine to upright posture was associated with increased muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA). Although this finding was not unexpected, lower average stroke volume and greater average MSNA measured after space flight in both supine and upright postures were positioned in a linear fashion on the same stroke volume-MSNA stimulus-response relationship as the average pre-flight stroke volume and MSNA

Beyond Low-Earth Orbit: Characterizing Immune and microRNA Differentials following Simulated Deep Spaceflight Conditions in Mice.

Spaceflight missions can cause immune system dysfunction in astronauts with little understanding of immune outcomes in deep space. This study assessed immune responses in mice following ground-based, simulated deep spaceflight conditions, compared with data from astronauts on International Space Station missions. For ground studies, we simulated microgravity using the hindlimb unloaded mouse model alone or in combination with acute simulated galactic cosmic rays or solar particle events irradiation. Immune profiling results revealed unique immune diversity following each experimental condition

Neurovestibular symptoms following space flight.

Neurovestibular symptoms experienced by astronauts in the post-flight period were examined using data from medical debriefs contained in the NASA Longitudinal Study of Astronaut Health database. Ten symptoms were identified (clumsiness, difficulty concentrating, persisting sensation aftereffects, nausea, vomiting, vertigo while walking, vertigo while standing, difficulty walking a straight line, blurred vision, and dry heaves), of which eight were crossed with twelve demographic parameters (mission duration, astronaut gender, age, one-g piloting experience, previous space flight experience, g-

Spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome: proposed pathogenesis, terrestrial analogues, and emerging countermeasures.

Spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) refers to a distinct constellation of ocular, neurological and neuroimaging findings observed in astronauts during and following long duration spaceflight. These ocular findings, to include optic disc oedema, posterior globe flattening, chorioretinal folds and hyperopic shifts, were first described by NASA in 2011. SANS is a potential risk to astronaut health and will likely require mitigation prior to planetary travel with prolonged exposures to microgravity. While the exact pathogenesis of SANS is not completely understood, several hypothes

[Possibility of exacerbation of allergy by lunar regolith].

Japan, U.S.A. and other foreign space agencies have plans for the construction of a lunar base and long-term stay of astronauts on the moon. The surface of the moon is covered by a thick layer of soil that includes fine particles called "lunar regolith", which is formed by meteorite impact and space weathering. Risk assessment of particulate matter on the moon is important for astronauts working in microgravity on the moon. However, there are few investigations about the biological influences of lunar regolith. Especially, there is no investigation about allergic activity to lunar regolith. Th

Prediction of space motion sickness susceptibility by disconjugate eye torsion in parabolic flight.

The hypothesis of asymmetric otolith function asserts that physiological or anatomical differences in the two sides of the bilateral gravity-sensing otolith apparatus of the inner ear may be well compensated on Earth, but when exposed to novel gravitational states, the prior compensatory stratagems may be ineffective, leading to unstable vestibular responses and causing the phenomenon of space motion sickness. To investigate this hypothesis, spontaneous eye torsion, a reflex governed by the otolith organs, was examined in the upright position during the hypo- and hypergravity of parabolic flig

Aging in orbit: The twelve hallmarks as a bidirectional bridge between spaceflight-induced senescence and terrestrial geroscience.

Human spaceflight exposes crew members to a combination of environmental stressors - including microgravity, galactic cosmic radiation, circadian disruption, and prolonged confinement - that together induce multisystem physiological changes resembling terrestrial aging. In this narrative review, we examine how short- and medium-term spaceflight affects all twelve recognized hallmarks of aging. Integrated multi-omics analyses in astronauts and rodent models identified mitochondrial dysfunction as a central node of spaceflight biology, with oxidative damage propagating genomic instability, cellu

Double-stranded RNA and reverse transcriptase signatures of endogenous retroviruses after exposure to spaceflight environment related stressors.

Spaceflight is known to alter immune function and has been associated with reactivation of latent viruses, such as herpesviruses, in astronauts. The human and rodent genomes also contain thousands of endogenous retroviral sequences (ERVs) which are remnants of ancient germline retroviral infections that have been epigenetically silenced over evolutionary time. Although transcriptionally repressed under baseline conditions, ERV-associated molecular signatures such as double-stranded RNA and reverse transcriptase activity can re-emerge in response to environmental stress. Expression of these has

Vestibular plasticity following orbital spaceflight: recovery from postflight postural instability.

Results of previous studies suggested that the vestibular mediated postural instability observed in astronauts upon return to earth from orbital spaceflight may be exacerbated by an increased weighting of visual inputs for spatial orientation and control of movement. This study was performed to better understand the roles of visual and somatosensory contributions to recovery of normal sensori-motor postural control in returning astronauts. Preflight and postflight, 23 astronaut volunteers were presented randomly with three trials of six sensory organization test (SOT) conditions in the EquiTes

Neurosurgery and spinal adaptations in spaceflight: A literature review.

BACKGROUND: Spaceflight places astronauts in multiple environments capable of inducing pathological changes. Alterations in the spine have a significant impact on astronauts' health during and after spaceflight. Low back pain is an established and common intra-flight complaint. Intervertebral disc herniation occurs at higher rates in this population and poses significant morbidity. Morphological changes within intervertebral discs, vertebral bodies, and spinal postural muscles affect overall spine function and astronaut performance. There remains a paucity of research related to spaceflight-in

Giant hepatic hemangioma and cross-fused ectopic kidney in a spaceflight participant.

Commercial spaceflight participants are typically older than traditional astronauts and often have medical conditions that make medical certification for flight difficult. This case report considers a 43-yr-old spaceflight participant who planned a short-duration Soyuz flight to the International Space Station (ISS). While he participated in many hazardous activities such as parachuting, hang gliding, scuba diving, Antarctic and jungle exploration, and deep sea submersible operations, he knew that several of his medical conditions precluded serving as a career astronaut. At the time of his ini

Optimizing autonomous artificial intelligence diagnostics for neuro-ocular health in space missions.

Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome (SANS) presents a critical risk in long-duration missions, with microgravity-induced changes that threaten astronaut vision and mission outcomes. Current SANS monitoring, limited to pre- and post-flight exams, lacks in-flight diagnostics, highlighting an urgent need for autonomous tools capable of real-time assessment. Grok, an AI platform by xAI, offers promising potential as an advanced diagnostic tool for space-based health monitoring. Originally developed for broader applications, Grok's high-resolution imaging capabilities could be adapted to d

Opposite response of blood vessels in the retina to 6° head-down tilt and long-duration microgravity.

The Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS), associated with the headward fluid shifts incurred in microgravity during long-duration missions, remains a high-priority health and performance risk for human space exploration. To help characterize the pathophysiology of SANS, NASA's VESsel GENeration Analysis (VESGEN) software was used to map and quantify vascular adaptations in the retina before and after 70 days of bed rest at 6-degree Head-Down Tilt (HDT), a well-studied microgravity analog. Results were compared to the retinal vascular response of astronauts following 6-month miss

Simulation of Space-Adaptation Syndrome on Earth.

The three Spacelab D-1 Scientist Astronauts were exposed to a 1.5 h centrifuge run in the supine position, resulting in a linear 3 g acceleration. They used their space experience to evaluate their readaptation to normal gravity and compared their observations with 'Space Adaptation Syndrome'. After the centrifuge runs, the vestibular visual system appeared to be modified in a very specific and reproducible manner. Readaptation to the normal 1 g environment took at least 6 h. During this period there was a striking similarity to the astronauts' experience during adaptation to weightlessness in

Physical demands and injuries to the upper extremity associated with the space program.

Hand and upper-extremity overuse and repetitive injuries in astronauts have been and continue to be a common problem in the space program. The demands on upper-extremity use in the astronaut training program, the zero-gravity environment, the extreme temperature conditions of space, the effects of space travel on human physiology/anatomy, and the constraints and pressures of space suits and gloves all can negatively impact upper-extremity function in ways that can result in overuse/repetitive injuries. Future plans for space exploration include endeavors that will continue and even increase th
