Effects of atrazine on the growth adaptability of yearling lizards (Eremias argus) under a perspective of global warming scenario.

Atrazine is an endocrine disruptor widely present in environment and poses potential threats to ecosystem security. However, studies regarding its impact on reptiles remain limited, particularly under climate warming. This study investigated the effects of atrazine and warming on the growth of yearling lizard (Eremias argus). Lizards were exposed to environmentally relevant but predicted worst-case dose of atrazine (0 and 4 mg/kg) at controlled or warmed conditions for eight weeks. Results revealed that both atrazine and warming adversely affected growth of yearlings, with atrazine identified

Long-term disruption of oviductal immune homeostasis in Caiman latirostris following in ovo exposure to endosulfan or atrazine.

The oviduct of reptiles can be infected by a wide range of pathogens, potentially compromising organ health and egg viability. Early exposure to endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDC) can lead to immune system alterations, by either suppressing or exacerbating the immune response. In this study, we investigate immune homeostasis in the oviduct of Caiman latirostris and assess whether in ovo exposure to endosulfan (END) or atrazine (ATZ) disrupts immune homeostasis at the pre-pubertal juvenile stage. We analyzed the mRNA expression of β-defensin 12 (BD12), the correlation between defensin express

An ultrasensitive electrode modified with a molecularly imprinted PEDOT-TiO2 nanocomposite for voltammetric atrazine detection in environmental samples.

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have been studied to be used as a platform for electrochemical sensing devices, with special regard to the determination of pesticides. Due to MIP applicability, in the present research, we develop a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with a molecularly imprinted nanocomposite based on the doping of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) with chitosan (Chit) and TiO2 nanoparticles for sensing atrazine in environmental samples. The construction of the MIP nanocomposite was divided into four parts, which include the chitosan-TiO2 layer formation by sim

Impact of Chronic Multi-Generational Exposure to an Environmentally Relevant Atrazine Concentration on Testicular Development and Function in Mice.

A common herbicide, atrazine, is associated with poor health. Atrazine acts as an endocrine disruptor at supra-environmental levels. Little research, however, has been conducted regarding chronic exposure to environmental atrazine concentrations across generations. This study utilized comprehensive endpoint measures to investigate the effects of chronic exposure to a conservative atrazine concentration (0.02 ng/mL), measured in Australian waterways, on male mice fertility across two generations. Mice were exposed through the maternal line, from the pre-conception period and through the F1 and

Disruption of the developmental programming of the gonad of the broad snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris) after in ovo exposure to atrazine.

Environmental exposure to agrochemicals during early stages of development can induce subtle alterations that could permanently affect normal physiology. Previously, we reported that in ovo exposure to atrazine (ATZ) disrupts testicular histoarchitecture in postnatal caimans (Caiman latirostris). To assess whether such alterations are the result of disruption of gonadal developmental programming, this study aimed to evaluate the expression of histofunctional biomarkers (VASA, ER, PR, PCNA, and aromatase) and genes involved in gonadal development and differentiation (amh, sox-9, sf-1 and cyp19-

Atrazine and nitrate in drinking water and the risk of preterm delivery and low birth weight in four Midwestern states.

BACKGROUND: Atrazine and nitrate are common contaminants in water, and there is limited evidence that they are associated with adverse birth outcomes. The objective of this study was to examine whether atrazine and nitrate in water are associated with an increased risk of preterm delivery (PTD) and term low birth weight (LBW). METHODS: The study included a total of 134,258 singletons births born between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2008 from 46 counties in four Midwestern states with public water systems that were included in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s atrazine monit

Inflammatory reaction regulated by microglia plays a role in atrazine-induced dopaminergic neuron degeneration in the substantia nigra.

Atrazine (ATR) is a widely used herbicide, although it is potentially ecotoxic. Increasing evidence indicates that ATR plays a critical role in inducing physiological changes to the endocrine and reproductive systems, and further may affect the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system in the diencephalon, resulting in altered dopamine (DA) levels in the striatum, transport and storage-related protein abnormalities in the synaptic terminals, motor function deficits, and degeneration of DA neurons in the substantia nigra (SN). As the primary immunocytes in the central nervous system (CNS), microglial f

Effects of atrazine and chlorpyrifos on DNA methylation in the liver, kidney and gill of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.).

Pesticide exposure has repeatedly been associated with cancers, although the molecular mechanisms behind this association are largely undetermined. Abnormal DNA methylation plays a key role in the process of some disease. However, little was known about the effect of pesticides on DNA methylation in the common carp. In this study, we investigated the mRNA levels of DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs) and methyl-CpG-binding protein DNA-binding domain protein 2 (MBD2) as well as the DNA methylation levels in the liver, kidney and gill of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) after 40-d exposure to atr

Toxicity of the insecticide terbufos, its oxidation metabolites, and the herbicide atrazine in binary mixtures to Ceriodaphnia cf dubia.

The acute toxicity of terbufos and its major metabolites, tested alone, in binary mixtures or in combination with atrazine were evaluated using neonates of the cladoceran Ceriodaphnia cf dubia. Terbufos, terbufos sulfoxide, and terbufos sulfone tested individually were highly toxic to C. cf dubia, with mean 96-h EC(50) values of 0.08, 0.36, and 0.19 μg/l, respectively. The addition of atrazine (10 μg/l) significantly increased the toxicity of terbufos. The toxicity of terbufos sulfone was unaffected by atrazine, whereas the results for terbufos sulfoxide were equivocal. Equitoxic mixtures of t

The functional and structural observations of the neonatal reproductive system of alligators exposed in ovo to atrazine, 2,4-D, or estradiol.

Wild alligators exposed to persistent organochlorine contaminants, municipal waste compounds, and contemporary-use herbicides exhibit reproductive alterations that are thought to be caused by endocrine disruption. This study tests the hypothesis that these alterations, at least in part, result from exposure of alligator embryos to contemporary-use herbicides. Alligator eggs were collected early in development, exposed to estradiol-17 beta, atrazine, or 2,4-D (at dosages of 0.14, 1.4, and 14 ppm, plus a dosage of 0.014 ppm for estradiol-17 beta only) before the period of gonadal differentiation

Evaluating the effectiveness of EPA's proposed runoff mitigation plan on atrazine surface water concentrations in the United States.

Atrazine is the second most widely used pesticide and the most widespread pesticide water contaminant in the United States. As part of its periodic review of atrazine impacts, the US regulatory authority on pesticides-the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-is in the process of identifying atrazine risks and crafting a plan to mitigate atrazine runoff. EPA's review has found extensive atrazine water contamination in the United States, with over one-eighth of the watersheds in the continental United States estimated to contain atrazine concentrations exceeding levels known to harm aquatic eco

Long-term effects of in ovo exposure to an environmentally relevant dose of atrazine on the thyroid gland of Caiman latirostris.

The increased incidence of human thyroid disorders, particularly in women, suggests that the exposure to endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) together with sex-related factors could play a role in thyroid dysregulation. Since the herbicide atrazine (ATZ) is an environmental EDC suspected to behave as a thyroid disruptor, and Caiman latirostris is a crocodilian species highly sensitive to endocrine disruption that can be exposed to ATZ, this study aimed to describe the histoarchitecture and sexually dimorphic features of the thyroid gland of C. latirostris, and to determine the long-term effec

Atrazine immobilization on sludge derived biochar and the interactive influence of coexisting Pb(II) or Cr(VI) ions.

Sludge derived biochars (SDBCs) may have the potential to simultaneously remove heavy metals and organic contaminants in relation to their various active sorption sites for both metal ions and organic compounds. SDBCs have been proven to provide a considerable capacity for immobilizing Pb(II) and Cr(VI) ions in solution, and in this study their ability to sorb atrazine, in addition to their corresponding interactive influences with coexisting metal ions, is extensively investigated. The results indicate that all atrazine adsorption isotherms fit well with the Freundlich equation, and the great
