Attentional bias in complicated grief.

BACKGROUND: Complicated Grief (CG) is a debilitating potential consequence of bereavement. Despite the significant health costs associated with CG, relatively little is known about the cognitive processes associated with the condition. This study investigated information processing in CG. METHOD: Twenty four individuals with CG and 25 bereaved individuals without CG completed a modified emotional Stroop task in which they were presented with death-related and neutral cue words. Half of the participants were also given instructions to suppress thoughts of their loved one's death while completi

Attentional fixation in panic disorder.

According to Beck's (1988) clinical observations, patients with panic disorder describe a fixation on their distressing physical and psychological symptoms and an inability to access corrective information during panic attacks. The present study sought to evaluate empirically the notion that attentional fixation is characteristic of these patients. A subset of panic patients participating in 3 cognitive therapy clinical trials completed the Attentional Fixation Questionnaire (AFQ) at intake, during treatment and at termination. The AFQ had adequate internal consistency at all time intervals, a

Dopamine and the regulation of cognition and attention.

Dopamine (DA) acts as a key neurotransmitter in the brain. Numerous studies have shown its regulatory role for motor and limbic functions. However, in the early stages of Parkinson's disease (PD), alterations of executive functions also suggest a role for DA in regulating cognitive functions. Some other diseases, which can also involve DA dysfunction, such as schizophrenia or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, as shown from the ameliorative action of dopaminergic antagonists and agonists, respectively, also show alteration of cognitive functions. Experimental studies

Attention to infants in the first year.

The time spent by 158 infants in contact with their carers at 6, 13, 26 and 52 weeks was reviewed prospectively. Periods of contact in the categories of (1) physical care, (2) holding the crying or sleeping infant, and (3) playing and interacting with the infant were recorded using 24-h log diaries completed by the mother. The mean total carer contact time over a 24-h day did not change significantly in the first year, varying between 6.5 and 73 h. Between 6 and 52 weeks, time spent by the mother in physical care declined significantly from 207 to 143 min and in holding the crying or sleeping

Attentional biases and vulnerability to depression.

This study was designed to examine selective processing of emotional information in depression. It focuses on possible attentional biases in depression, and whether such biases constitute a cognitive vulnerability factor to suffer from the disorder or, on the contrary, they reflect a feature associated exclusively with the clinical level of depression. 81 participants were included in the study: 15 with a diagnosis of Major Depression; 17 were diagnosed as Dysthymia; 11 participants scored over 18 in the Beck Depression Inventory (Beck, Rush, Shaw, & Emery, 1979); 15 participants, in whom a sa

Smartphone Addiction Modulates Object-Based Attention.

Smartphone addiction has been linked to altered attentional functioning. However, it remains unclear whether these alterations are associated with enhanced attentional bias or impaired attentional shifting. Moreover, previous studies have largely relied on self-report measures, and evidence for attentional bias has mainly been obtained using smartphone-related stimuli. This study employed the classic two-rectangle paradigm to compare selective attention (including space-based and object-based attention) between individuals with high and low levels of smartphone addiction and to determine wheth

Anal cancer ‒ Time to pay attention.

Anal cancer has traditionally received limited attention, partly because of its low incidence compared with other gastrointestinal malignancies. However, this situation may be changing. Although uncommon, anal cancer is increasingly recognized as a relevant public health problem in many high-income countries because it is largely human papillomavirus (HPV) related, potentially preventable, and disproportionately affects populations at increased risk. Incidence and mortality have increased over recent decades, particularly in populations exposed to persistent HPV infection and long-term immunos

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Adults.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder involving functionally disruptive inattentive and/or hyperactive/impulsive behaviors, such as being easily distracted, regularly failing to follow through on tasks, being restless, or often interrupting others. ADHD diagnosed in childhood often persists into adulthood, with 14.6% of U.S. adults meeting the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th ed., criteria for ADHD. When evaluating for adult ADHD, other mental disorders should be included in the differential diagnosis due to the substantial o

Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder in Athletes.

ADHD is common among the general population and may be slightly more common among athletes. Diagnosis requires six or more DSM-5-TR symptoms to have been present prior to age 12 and to have an effect on functioning in multiple settings. Different sporting organizations have varying requirements for documentation when making a diagnosis. Stimulant medications are the mainstay of treatment; psychosocial interventions, exercise, and non-stimulant medications can serve as adjuncts. Future directions in research on ADHD in sports include determining whether ADHD is overrepresented among the populat

Disease-Drug Interactions Requiring Special Attention.

This short review addresses disease-drug interactions requiring special attention, namely interactions between common conditions and over-the-counter medication and interactions between rare conditions and drugs that are absolutely contraindicated. We specifically examine over-the-counter analgesics, antiemetics and drugs used to treat allergy symptoms and underlying disease conditions they can exacerbate. Resources for avoiding disease-drug interactions in patients with rare conditions, such as myasthenia gravis, glucose-6-phosphate deficiency, mitochondriopathies and long QT-syndrome are giv

Attention capture outside the oculomotor range.

Neurophysiological studies have demonstrated that attentional orienting is associated with activity in fronto-parietal brain areas that play a pivotal role in oculomotor control, such as the lateral intraparietal cortex (LIP), the frontal eye fields (FEF), and the superior colliculus (SC) (e.g., [1]). Accordingly, based on the influential premotor theory of attention, which posits that even covert shifts of spatial attention in the absence of eye movements are elicited by preceding activation in the oculomotor system [2], it has been claimed that attention can only be allocated to where we can

Dissociable Components of Experience-Driven Attention.

What we pay attention to is influenced by current task goals (goal-directed attention) [1, 2], the physical salience of stimuli (stimulus-driven attention) [3-5], and selection history [6-12]. This third construct, which encompasses reward learning, aversive conditioning, and repetitive orienting behavior [12-18], is often characterized as a unitary mechanism of control that can be contrasted with the other two [12-14]. Here, we present evidence that two different learning processes underlie the influence of selection history on attention, with dissociable consequences for orienting behavior.

Perception in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

A large body of research demonstrated that individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) suffer from various neuropsychological deficits. In contrast, less is known and only divergent evidence exists on perceptual functions of individuals with ADHD. This is problematic as neuropsychological and perceptual functions are closely interrelated and are often difficult to disentangle in behavioral assessments. This study presents the conduct and results of a systematic literature review on perceptual functions in children and adults with ADHD. This review considers studies using p

[Prevention in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder].

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that begins at an early age and can be present until adulthood. Subjects with ADHD not only have symptoms such as inattention, impulsivity or hyperactivity but also have their social and emotional areas affected. In addition, they have an associated increased risk for presenting comorbilities with other psychiatric disorders, overshadowing the development. Considering ADHD as a evolutionary risk factor, prevention should be considered as a primary goal. Most preventive actions on ADHD have been focused on tertiary
