OBJECTIVE: Vincristine chemotherapy is mainly associated with neurotoxic effects. The ototoxicity of vincristine has been related to high dosage, while low and moderate doses do not seem to induce significant hearing impairment when measured by pure tone or speech audiometry. Otoacoustic emissions have been reported to be more sensitive in early detection of ototoxicity than conventional pure tone audiometry. The present study was directed at determining whether vincristine treatment interferes with outer hair cell function in the absence of measurable changes in pure tone audiometry.

PURPOSE: In most cases, tinnitus co-exists with hearing loss, suggesting that poorer speech understanding is simply due to a lack of acoustic information reaching the central nervous system (CNS). However, it also happens that patients with tinnitus who have normal hearing also report problems with speech understanding, and it is possible to suppose that tinnitus is to blame for difficulties in perceptual processing of auditory information. IMPORTANCE: Cancer survivors are at a higher risk of developing hearing loss (HL) due to older age, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. However, the prevalence of HL among US cancer survivors remains unknown. Additionally, there is a lack of uniform HL screening guidelines for this enlarging population.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A rare type of nonsyndromic autosomal recessive hereditary hearing loss is caused by pathogenic mutations in the TRIOBP gene mostly involving exons 6 and 7. These mutations cause hearing loss originating from dysfunction of sensory inner ear hair cells. Of all the affected siblings, 2 brothers and 1 sister, part of an Afghan family, were referred to our clinic for diagnostic workup and candidacy selection for cochlear implantation (CI).
