Low-dose, long-term caroverine administration attenuates impulse noise-induced hearing loss in the rat.

CONCLUSION: Physiological and morphological assessments indicated that low-dose and long-term caroverine delivery might be a new approach to protect against impulse noise-induced hearing loss. BACKGROUND: Although the exact mechanisms by which impulse noise causes hearing loss are still unclear, there is accumulating evidence that increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and excessive glutamate released from the inner hair cells lead to hair cell loss and consequently hearing loss. Caroverine is an antagonist of two glutamate receptors, alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazoleprop

Nocturnal vestibular stimulation using a rocking bed improves a severe sleep disorder in a patient with mitochondrial disease.

Mitochondrial diseases are rare genetic disorders often accompanied by severe sleep disorders. We present the case of a 12-year-old boy diagnosed with a severe primary mitochondrial disease, exhibiting ataxia, spasticity, progressive external ophthalmoplegia, cardiomyopathy and severely disrupted sleep, but no cognitive impairment. Interestingly, his parents reported improved sleep during night train rides. Based on this observation, we installed a rocking bed in the patient's bedroom and performed different interventions, including immersive multimodal vestibular, kinesthetic and auditory sti

Higher-order brain processes, rather than early processing, underlie sensory problems in ME/CFS: evidence from ERPs.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME)/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) experience significant sensory problems that affect their personal, social and occupational life. However, there is no clear understanding of how the sensory problems manifest in ME/CFS. Neuroimaging studies have provided indirect evidence of the involvement of sensory brain areas in ME/CFS. This novel systematically examined the role of early sensory processing and late information processing brain systems in ME/CFS patients. METHODS: The participants consisted of 31 ME/CFS patients and 30 healthy match

Cerebellar abnormalities contribute to disability including cognitive impairment in multiple sclerosis.

The cerebellum is known to be involved not only in motor but also cognitive and affective processes. Structural changes in the cerebellum in relation to cognitive dysfunction are an emerging topic in the field of neuro-psychiatric disorders. In Multiple Sclerosis (MS) cerebellar motor and cognitive dysfunction occur in parallel, early in the onset of the disease, and the cerebellum is one of the predilection sites of atrophy. This study is aimed at determining the relationship between cerebellar volumes, clinical cerebellar signs, cognitive functioning and fatigue in MS. Cerebellar volumetry w

Vocal plasticity at different time spans during exposures to biotic and abiotic natural sounds in an austral temperate forest frog.

Several instances of short-term plasticity of reproductive behaviors are known to modulate interactions among competing individuals. Habituation and sensitization processes result in decrements and increments, respectively, of agonistic behaviors in breeding areas. The occurrence of such phenomena in the long term have been reported to a quite restricted extent. Frogs communicating acoustically experience auditory activation during days of exposure to conspecific signals, and thus we looked for vocal activation over such time span in male frogs Batrachyla taeniata. A total of 72 frogs were exp

3D Computational Modeling of Blast Wave Transmission from External Ear to Cochlear Hair Cells.

The human ear is a complex biomechanical system that transduces sound or blast waves into cochlear hair cells for sensory perception. Understanding the full pathway of mechanical energy transmission, from the external ear through the middle ear and into the cochlear sensory structures, is essential for advancing clinical surgical treatment, hearing protection, and auditory prostheses. Over the past two decades, finite element (FE) modeling has become a powerful tool for analyzing ear mechanics, offering insights that complement experimental limitations. This chapter summarizes major developmen

Efficacy of a Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract Exercises-Therapeutic Program in Behavioral Dysphonia: A Randomized and Blinded Clinical Trial.

PURPOSE: Semi-occluded vocal tract exercises (SOVTE) may improve the source and filter interaction by changing the acoustic characteristics and the impedance of the vocal tract, both in dysphonic and vocally healthy populations. However, there are a few studies that verify the effects of these exercises in a clinical trial. Thus, this study's purpose was to analyze the effectiveness of the SOVTE-Therapeutic Program (SOVTE-TP) in vocal quality and self-assessment, comparing it with Vocal Function Exercises. METHOD: Eighteen (eight men; 10 women), ages 18-50, with behavioral dysphonia participa

Noise-induced cochlear hypoxia is intensity dependent, correlates with hearing loss and precedes reduction of cochlear blood flow.

Anesthetized and artificially ventilated guinea pigs were exposed to broad-band noise of 95, 101, 106 or 115 dB SPL for 30 min and studied for 180 min after cessation of noise. The partial pressure of oxygen (pO2) in the perilymph, the cochlear blood flow (CoBF) and auditory-evoked potentials were continuously recorded. Arterial blood pressure, electrocardiogram, inspiratory and expiratory gas levels, arterial blood gas levels and acid-base status were kept stable to exclude influences of these parameters on cochlear parameters. Exposure to 95 dB SPL did not affect perilymphatic pO2 or CoBF. C

Evaluation of Functional Impacts of Vision Impairment: Progress, Challenges and Future Directions.

Vision impairment has profound consequences for everyday functioning and quality of life. This review summarises recent evidence on the impact of vision impairment in three functional domains: mobility and falls risk, driving, and the interaction between vision impairment and hearing. Individuals with vision impairment often adopt more cautious gait and visual search behaviours; however, they remain less stable and at increased falls risk, dependent on the type and severity of vision impairment. Wearable technologies enable continuous measurement of movement in naturalistic settings. Future re

Impact of Single-Side Deafness on Listening Effort: A Prospective Comparative Study.

OBJECTIVE: Single-sided deafness (SSD) impairs sound source localization and speech recognition in noisy environments, requiring greater listening effort from affected individuals. Using pupillometry, this study aimed to investigate listening effort across two cognitive dimensions: selective attention and working memory in patients with SSD. METHODS: Forty-six participants were divided into a unilateral deafness (SSD) group and a normal hearing (NH) group. They completed two tests involving word and sentence recognition tasks, with accuracy and pupil diameter changes serving as indicators of

Cognitive impairment in multiple sclerosis: evidence-based analysis and recommendations.

Cognitive impairment is common in multiple sclerosis (MS), occurring at all stages of the disease, and can be a major source of vocational disability, social impairment, and impoverished quality of life. Dysfunction in free recall from long-term memory, speed of information processing, working memory, and abstract reasoning are frequently observed in MS. Despite weak correlation with disease duration and physical disability status, the degree of cognitive impairment in MS has been related to the extent of topographically specific neuronal tissue damage and loss. Additional clinical factors inc
