Self-reported benefit, sound perception, and quality-of-life in patients with auditory brainstem implants (ABIs).

CONCLUSION: The majority of the patients used their auditory brainstem implants (ABIs) all the time, reporting that he/she would make the decision to receive an implant again if the decision were reconsidered. The findings support that the ABI is a valuable treatment in patients with type 2 neurofibromatosis (NF2) and in children with congenital inner ear and nerve anomalies or cochlear ossification. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the patients who underwent ABI implantation in Uppsala during 1993-2013. This study analyzed patients' implant use, perception of environmental sounds, perceived benefit fr

Temporal order and processing acuity of visual, auditory, and tactile perception in developmentally dyslexic young adults.

We studied the temporal acuity of 16 developmentally dyslexic young adults in three perceptual modalities. The control group consisted of 16 age- and IQ-matched normal readers. Two methods were used. In the temporal order judgment (TOJ) method, the stimuli were spatially separate fingertip indentations in the tactile system, tone bursts of different pitches in audition, and light flashes in vision. Participants indicated which one of two stimuli appeared first. To test temporal processing acuity (TPA), the same 8-msec nonspeech stimuli were presented as two parallel sequences of three stimulus

Auditory processing, speech perception and phonological ability in pre-school children at high-risk for dyslexia: a longitudinal study of the auditory temporal processing theory.

This study investigates whether the core bottleneck of literacy-impairment should be situated at the phonological level or at a more basic sensory level, as postulated by supporters of the auditory temporal processing theory. Phonological ability, speech perception and low-level auditory processing were assessed in a group of 5-year-old pre-school children at high-family risk for dyslexia, compared to a group of well-matched low-risk control children. Based on family risk status and first grade literacy achievement children were categorized in groups and pre-school data were retrospectively re

Hysteresis effects in visual and auditory perception and the comparison of underlying neural mechanisms - an EEG study.

Perceptual hysteresis-the tendency to maintain a current percept even as sensory input shifts towards an alternative interpretation-provides a useful model for studying how recent perceptual history stabilises ongoing perception. The present EEG study, to our best knowledge, provides the first side-by-side examination of the neural correlates of visual and auditory hysteresis within a common experimental and analytical framework. In two experiments, participants viewed ambiguous Necker cubes or listened to ambiguous Shepard tones. In both modalities, stimuli were presented either in a sequenti

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Does Not Increase Auditory False Perceptions in Healthy Participants.

We aimed to test a neurocognitive model positing that auditory hallucinations arise from a hyperactive left temporoparietal cortex and a hypoactive left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Specifically, 104 healthy individuals completed a signal detection task that induces auditory false perceptions while receiving transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). All participants were tested twice, once with real and once with sham tDCS. However, in half of the participants, the electrode montage mimicked the hypertemporal/hypofrontal model (anode over temporoparietal cortex and cathode over dorsol

Auditory perception and attention as reflected by the brain event-related potentials in children with Asperger syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Language development is delayed and deviant in individuals with autism, but proceeds quite normally in those with Asperger syndrome (AS). We investigated auditory-discrimination and orienting in children with AS using an event-related potential (ERP) paradigm that was previously applied to children with autism. METHODS: ERPs were measured to pitch, duration, and phonetic changes in vowels and to corresponding changes in non-speech sounds. Active sound discrimination was evaluated with a sound-identification task. RESULTS: The mismatch negativity (MMN), indexing sound-discriminatio

A 7 Tesla fMRI investigation of human tinnitus percept in cortical and subcortical auditory areas.

Tinnitus is a clinical condition defined by hearing a sound in the absence of an objective source. Early experiments in animal models have suggested that tinnitus stems from an alteration of processing in the auditory system. However, translating these results to humans has proven challenging. One limiting factor has been the insufficient spatial resolution of non-invasive measurement techniques to investigate responses in subcortical auditory nuclei, like the inferior colliculus and the medial geniculate body (MGB). Here we employed ultra-high field functional magnetic resonance imaging (UHF-

Measurements of the local evoked potential from the cochlear nucleus in patients with an auditory brainstem implant and its implication to auditory perception and audio processor programming.

The measurement of the electrically evoked compound action potential (ECAP) in cochlear implant (CI) patients is widely used to provide evidence of a functioning electrode-nerve interface, to confirm proper location of the electrode array and to program the sound processor. In patients with an auditory brainstem implant (ABI), a likewise versatile measurement would be desirable. The ECAP measurement paradigm "Alternating Polarity" was utilized to record responses via the implanted ABI electrode array placed on the cochlear nucleus. Emphasizing on the different location of stimulation and recor

Auditory illusory models as proxies to investigate bottom-up and top-down neural networks of phantom perception.

Auditory phantom perception, exemplified by tinnitus, is characterized by a perceptual experience without external stimuli. This study utilized two auditory illusions, the Zwicker Tone (ZT) and Conditioned Hallucinations (CH), as proxies to investigate the neural correlates of bottom-up and top-down mechanisms underlying phantom auditory perception. Using a within-subject design, ZT, driven by temporary sensory deficits, and CH, influenced by multisensory expectations, were examined in a sample of healthy participants. Electrophysiological measures revealed distinct time-frequency patterns, wi

The relationship between speech in noise perception and auditory working memory capacity in monolingual and bilingual adults.

OBJECTIVE: Speech-in-noise perception is dependent on the interaction between sensory and cognitive processes. One factor that can relate to both processes is bilingualism. This study aimed to determine the correlation between auditory-working-memory and speech-in-noise in Persian monolinguals and Kurdish-Persian bilinguals. DESIGN: Speech-in-noise tests (sentences-in-noise and syllables-in-noise) and auditory-working-memory tests (forward and backward digit span, and n-back) were performed. STUDY SAMPLE: Participants were 48 Kurdish-Persian bilinguals with a mean age of 24 (±4) years and 48

Relationship Between Temporal Pattern Perception Test and Mismatch Negativity in Children With Auditory Processing Disorder and Dyslexia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Mismatch negativity (MMN) is an objective test for assessing auditory function. The central auditory nervous system processes different stimuli in various ways. This can be assessed using MMN elicited with different stimuli in an "oddball" paradigm. This study evaluated temporal ordering skills using MMN with different durations of stimuli. This study aimed to determine the correlation between the results of the behavioral duration pattern test (DPT) with MMN in typically developing children versus children with dyslexia and auditory processing disorder (APD). Effect of Vowel Auditory Training on the Speech-In-Noise Perception among Older Adults with Normal Hearing.

INTRODUCTION: Aging reduces the ability to understand speech in noise. Hearing rehabilitation is one of the ways to help older people communicate effectively. This study aimed to investigate the effect of vowel auditory training on the improvement of speech-in-noise (SIN) perception among elderly listeners. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted on 36 elderly listeners (17 males and 15 females) with the mean±SD of 67.6±6.33. They had the normal peripheral auditory ability but had difficulties in SIN perception. The samples were randomly divided into two groups of intervention and con

Auditory Brainstem Implant Array Position Varies Widely Among Adult and Pediatric Patients and Is Associated With Perception.

OBJECTIVES: The auditory brainstem implant (ABI) provides sound awareness to patients who are ineligible for cochlear implantation. Auditory performance varies widely among similar ABI cohorts. We hypothesize that differences in electrode array position contribute to this variance. Herein, we classify ABI array position based on postoperative imaging and investigate the relationship between position and perception. DESIGN: Retrospective review of pediatric and adult ABI users with postoperative computed tomography. To standardize views across subjects, true axial reformatted series of scans w

Positron Emission Tomography Imaging Reveals Auditory and Frontal Cortical Regions Involved with Speech Perception and Loudness Adaptation.

Considerable progress has been made in the treatment of hearing loss with auditory implants. However, there are still many implanted patients that experience hearing deficiencies, such as limited speech understanding or vanishing perception with continuous stimulation (i.e., abnormal loudness adaptation). The present study aims to identify specific patterns of cerebral cortex activity involved with such deficiencies. We performed O-15-water positron emission tomography (PET) in patients implanted with electrodes within the cochlea, brainstem, or midbrain to investigate the pattern of cortical

Exploring cross-modal perception in a virtual classroom: the effect of visual stimuli on auditory selective attention.

In virtual reality research, distinguishing between auditory and visual influences on perception has become increasingly challenging. To study auditory selective attention in more close-to-real-life settings, an auditory task was adapted to a virtual classroom. The new environment suggested evidence of increased attention, possibly introduced by the visual representation, gamification effects, and immersion. This could engage participants more effectively. To delve deeper into the impact of cross-modal effects, the paradigm was extended by visual stimuli. Participants were initially tasked wit

Bionic Luminescent Sensors Based on Covalent Organic Frameworks: Auditory, Gustatory, and Olfactory Information Monitoring for Multimode Perception.

The synthesis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with excellent luminescent properties and their effective application in the field of bionic sensing remain a formidable challenge. Herein, a series of COFs with different numbers of hydroxyl groups are successfully synthesized, and the number of hydroxyl groups on the benzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde (BTA) linker influences the properties of the final COFs. The COF (HHBTA-OH) prepared with hydrazine hydrate (HH) and BTA containing one hydroxyl group as the ligands exhibits the best fluorescent performance. MA@HHBTA-OH is formed by the reaction

Parkinson's disease deficits in time perception to auditory as well as visual stimuli - A large online study.

Cognitive deficits are common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and range from mild cognitive impairment to dementia, often dramatically reducing quality of life. Physiological models have shown that attention and memory are predicated on the brain's ability to process time. Perception has been shown to be increased or decreased by activation or deactivation of dopaminergic neurons respectively. Here we investigate differences in time perception between patients with PD and healthy controls. We have measured differences in sub-second- and second-time intervals. Sensitivity and error in perception as
