Electrodermally differentiated subgroups of anxiety patients and controls. II: Relationships with auditory, somatosensory and pain thresholds, agoraphobic fear, depression and cerebral laterality.

Patients diagnosed (DSM III) with anxiety disorders (agoraphobia, panic syndrome, generalised anxiety syndrome) were classified along with controls as electrodermally stabile or labile on the basis of non-specific electrodermal activity and rate of habituation to tones. While patients showed more evidence of psychopathology than controls on scales of anxiety, neuroticism, depression and agoraphobic fear, patient labiles scored higher than stabiles on agoraphobic fear and were differentiated by higher scores of Beck depression. They were also more sensitive to pain, whereas patient stabiles wer

Auditory Detection Thresholds and Cochlear Resistivity Differ Between Pediatric Cochlear Implant Listeners With Enlarged Vestibular Aqueduct and Those With Connexin-26 Mutations.

Purpose The goal of this study was to evaluate differences in the electrode-neuron interface as a function of hearing loss etiology in pediatric cochlear implant (CI) listeners with enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) syndrome and in those with autosomal recessive connexin-26 mutations (DFNB1). Method Fifteen implanted ears (9 participants, 5 ears with EVA, 10 ears with DFNB1) were assessed. Single-channel auditory detection thresholds were measured using broad and spatially focused electrode configurations (steered quadrupolar; focusing coefficients = 0 and 0.9). Cochlear resistivity estimates

Feasibility of Diagnosing Dead Regions Using Auditory Steady-State Responses to an Exponentially Amplitude Modulated Tone in Threshold Equalizing Notched Noise, Assessed Using Normal-Hearing Participants.

The aim of this study was to assess feasibility of using electrophysiological auditory steady-state response (ASSR) masking for detecting dead regions (DRs). Fifteen normally hearing adults were tested using behavioral and electrophysiological tasks. In the electrophysiological task, ASSRs were recorded to a 2 kHz exponentially amplitude-modulated tone (AM2) presented within a notched threshold equalizing noise (TEN) whose center frequency (CFNOTCH) varied. We hypothesized that, in the absence of DRs, ASSR amplitudes would be largest for CFNOTCH at/or near the signal frequency. In the presence

Congenital cytomegalovirus infection and audiological follow-up: electrophysiological auditory threshold before 3 months of age as a predictor of hearing outcome at 3 years of age.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate whether electrophysiological auditory thresholds (EATs) before 3 month of age, as assessed by the auditory brainstem responses (ABR) test and the auditory steady state responses (ASSR) test, can predict hearing outcome at 3 years of age among children born with congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection. STUDY DESIGN: Audiological assessment was performed before 3 months of age, and every 6 months thereafter until 3 years of age, in a population of 63 children (126 ears). EATs before 3 months of age and at 3 years of age were compared. RESULT: No ear with an

Low-frequency specificity of the auditory brainstem response threshold elicited by clicks masked with 1590-Hz high-pass noise in subjects with sloping cochlear hearing losses.

In this study, the frequency specificity of the ABR threshold to stimulation with a click masked with 1590-Hz high-pass noise was determined in subjects with sloping cochlear hearing losses both high- and low-frequency in character. The results show that the ABR threshold elicited by this stimulus is low-frequency specific. The standard error in estimating the 1,000-Hz pure-tone threshold from the high-pass-noise-masked click-evoked ABR threshold is 10.2 dB which equals that for estimating the 3,000-Hz pure-tone threshold from the routinely used unmasked click ABR threshold. The ABR threshold

40-Hz Sinusoidal Auditory Steady-State Response and Tone Burst Auditory Brainstem Response Using a Kalman Filter to Determine Thresholds Pre- and Post-Myringotomy With Grommet Tube in Children With Mild, Low-Frequency Conductive Hearing Loss.

PURPOSE: Accurate estimation of mild, low-frequency hearing loss is difficult in young children. This study aimed to determine the accuracy of 40-Hz sinusoidal auditory steady-state response (sASSR) compared with tone burst auditory brainstem response (TB-ABR) to detect mild, low-frequency hearing loss in children with otitis media with effusion and to measure postoperative thresholds. METHODS: Thresholds at 500 and 4000 Hz were measured behaviorally and electrophysiologically using TB-ABR and 40-Hz sASSR with a Kalman filter in 26 children with otitis media with effusion. Recording was condu

Early postnatal virus inoculation into the scala media achieved extensive expression of exogenous green fluorescent protein in the inner ear and preserved auditory brainstem response thresholds.

BACKGROUND: Gene transfer into the inner ear is a promising approach for treating sensorineural hearing loss. The special electrochemical environment of the scala media raises a formidable challenge for effective gene delivery at the same time as keeping normal cochlear function intact. The present study aimed to define a suitable strategy for preserving hearing after viral inoculation directly into the scala media performed at various postnatal developmental stages. METHODS: We assessed transgene expression of green fluorescent protein (GFP) mediated by various types of adeno-associated viru

Acoustic Reflexes in Normal-Hearing Adults, Typically Developing Children, and Children with Suspected Auditory Processing Disorder: Thresholds, Real-Ear Corrections, and the Role of Static Compliance on Estimates.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested elevated reflex thresholds in children with auditory processing disorders (APDs). However, some aspects of the child's ear such as ear canal volume and static compliance of the middle ear could possibly affect the measurements of reflex thresholds and thus impact its interpretation. Sound levels used to elicit reflexes in a child's ear may be higher than predicted by calibration in a standard 2-cc coupler, and lower static compliance could make visualization of very small changes in impedance at threshold difficult. For this purpose, it is important

Effects of exposing C57BL/6J mice to high- and low-frequency augmented acoustic environments: auditory brainstem response thresholds, cytocochleograms, anterior cochlear nucleus morphology and the role of gonadal hormones.

Gonadectomized and intact adult C57BL/6J (B6) mice of both sexes were exposed for 12h nightly to an augmented acoustic environment (AAE): repetitive bursts of a 70dB SPL noise band. The high-frequency AAE (HAAE) was a half-octave band centered at 20kHz; the low-frequency AAE (LAAE) was a 2-8kHz band. The effects of sex, gonadectomy, and AAE treatment on genetic progressive hearing loss (a trait of B6 mice) were evaluated by obtaining auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds at ages 3-, 6-, and 9-months. At 9-months of age, hair cell counts (cytocochleograms) were obtained, and morphometric

Robust and Efficient Online Auditory Psychophysics.

Most human auditory psychophysics research has historically been conducted in carefully controlled environments with calibrated audio equipment, and over potentially hours of repetitive testing with expert listeners. Here, we operationally define such conditions as having high 'auditory hygiene'. From this perspective, conducting auditory psychophysical paradigms online presents a serious challenge, in that results may hinge on absolute sound presentation level, reliably estimated perceptual thresholds, low and controlled background noise levels, and sustained motivation and attention. We intr

Comparison of ABR and ASSR using NB-chirp-stimuli in children with severe and profound hearing loss.

INTRODUCTION: Objective techniques for hearing threshold estimation in infants and children with profound or severe hearing loss play a key role in pediatric audiology to prevent speech acquisition disorders by choosing the adequate therapy. Auditory brainstem responses and auditory steady-state responses are available for frequency-dependent hearing threshold estimations and both techniques show strong correlations. However, various systems and stimuli are available, which is one reason why comparison is challenging, and, so far, no single "gold standard" could be established for hearing thre

The growth of and recovery from TTS in human subjects exposed to impact noise.

It is now recognized that temporary threshold shift (TTS) grows to an asymptotic level (ATS) after a prolonged exposure to steady-state and intermittent noise. Few studies have been conducted to verify this process of acquisition for impact noise. However, results obtained on animals have demonstrated that an asymptote is reached after 1-2 h of exposure. These results have been confirmed in the present study on four human subjects using a 470-ms (B duration) impact noise at a rate of 1 pps. The above pattern of acquisition has been retested on two subjects exposed to the same impact for period

Validation of multi-channel auditory steady-state response in adults with sensorineural hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: For various medico-legal and financial reasons, some patients may clinically demonstrate an exaggerated hearing loss that varies in degree, nature and laterality. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether multi-channel auditory steady-state response measurement can be used as an objective test of auditory thresholds in adults with sensorineural hearing loss. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a prospective, comparative, experimental research design study conducted in an academic medical centre. From January to June 2007, 142 subjects (284 ears) with varying degrees of senso

Sensitivity and specificity of auditory steady-state response testing.

INTRODUCTION: The ASSR test is an electrophysiological test that evaluates, among other aspects, neural synchrony, based on the frequency or amplitude modulation of tones. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the sensitivity and specificity of auditory steady-state response testing in detecting lesions and dysfunctions of the central auditory nervous system. METHODS: Seventy volunteers were divided into three groups: those with normal hearing; those with mesial temporal sclerosis; and those with central auditory processing disorder. All subjects underwent auditory steady-state r

Psychophysical profiles differentiate drugs of abuse.

Behavioral reaction times and both auditory and visual absolute thresholds were determined in baboons before and after the administration of stimulant and depressant drugs of abuse. Pentobarbital and diazepam increased reaction times and elevated the visual threshold in a dose-dependent manner. Diazepam also raised the auditory threshold though pentobarbital did not. Chlordiazepoxide affected neither sensory thresholds nor reaction times over the same dose range; d-methylamphetamine elevated the visual threshold, but did not elevate the auditory threshold or increase reaction times.

Is phase locking crucial to improve hearing thresholds in tinnitus patients?

Temporal processing of auditory data plays a crucial role in our proposed model of tinnitus development through stochastic resonance (SR). The model assumes a physiological mechanism optimizing auditory information transmission (as quantified by autocorrelation [AC] analysis) into the brain by adding the optimal amount of neuronal noise to otherwise subthreshold signals. We hypothesize that this takes place at the second synapse of the auditory pathway in the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN). We propose that after hearing loss, this neuronal noise is increased in the affected frequency band to im

Non-invasive auditory brainstem response measurements in an unanesthetized Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti).

Hearing thresholds are vital for assessing anthropogenic noise impacts on animals, yet commonly used electrophysiological techniques can pose welfare concerns from invasive electrodes and required anesthesia. This study investigated if auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were measurable via surface electrodes from an unanesthetized Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti). Successful ABR recordings generated thresholds between 36 and 41 dB re 20 μPa rms to click stimuli centered at 2 kHz, similar to previous data from penguins and other diving birds. This provides proof-of-concept that non-inva
