Autistic traits and panic disorder severity: a retrospective six-month follow-up study.

Panic disorder (PD) exhibits marked clinical heterogeneity, and individual differences in autistic traits may contribute to variability in symptom severity and treatment course. This study examined whether autistic traits are associated with panic severity and agoraphobic avoidance during pharmacological treatment. In this retrospective observational study, 41 adults with DSM-5-diagnosed PD receiving guideline-based pharmacotherapy were followed over six months. Symptom trajectories were assessed using the Panic Disorder Severity Scale (PDSS) at baseline, one month, and six months, while autis

Orthorexic Tendencies Are Associated with Autistic Traits in Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder.

Background/Objectives: Orthorexia Nervosa (ON), a condition marked by an obsessive focus on eating healthily, has drawn increasing clinical attention due to its rigid dietary patterns and social impairment. Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), characterized by emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, and unstable interpersonal relationships, frequently co-occurs with eating disorders. Recent research suggests that autistic traits-such as cognitive rigidity and restricted interests-may underlie both ON and BPD, especially in female populations. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of orthor

Psychiatric Emergency Visits of Autistic Adults With or Without Documented Borderline Personality Disorder.

Autism and borderline personality disorder (BPD) are each associated with increased psychiatric emergency department (PsyED) use, yet the service impact of coexisting autism-BPD remains unclear. We conducted a retrospective chart review of 1027 PsyED visits by 345 autistic adults (2018-2020) at an urban Canadian psychiatric hospital to compare service patterns between those with and without a BPD diagnosis. Sociodemographics, presenting reasons, restraint use, and disposition were analyzed using mixed-effects logistic regression. BPD was documented in 33.5% of visits and in 11.0% of unique aut

Amino Acid Patterns in Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder: A Preliminary Biochemical Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: The metabolism of plasma amino acid (AA) in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been extensively investigated, yielding inconclusive results. This study aims to characterize the metabolic alterations in AA profiles among early-diagnosed children with ASD and compare the findings with those from non-ASD children. METHODS: We analyzed plasma AA profiles, measured by ion exchange chromatography, from 1242 ASD children (median age = 4 years; 81% male). Additionally, we studied AA profiles from 488 children, matched for age and free of ASD (control group). Principal compon

Suitability of the DSM-5 social anxiety disorder severity scale for autistic adults.

In autistic adults, measurement tools may not adequately differentiate between autistic characteristics and features of anxiety. This may be particularly evident in the case of social anxiety disorder; however, few measures of social anxiety disorder have been validated for autistic adults. Instead, assessments are often made using measures designed and validated for non-autistic adults. To address this, we examined the suitability of the self-report Severity Measure for Social Anxiety Disorder in 284 autistic adults. We evaluated its psychometric properties, explored a rescored version that a

FMRP-Driven Neuropathology in Autistic Spectrum Disorder and Alzheimer's disease: A Losing Game.

Fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP) is an RNA binding protein (RBP) whose absence is essentially associated to Fragile X Syndrome (FXS). As an RNA Binding Protein (RBP), FMRP is able to bind and recognize different RNA structures and the control of specific mRNAs is important for neuronal synaptic plasticity. Perturbations of this pathway have been associated with the autistic spectrum. One of the FMRP partners is the APP mRNA, the main protagonist of Alzheimer's disease (AD), thereby regulating its protein level and metabolism. Therefore FMRP is associated to two neurodevelopmental an

Joint attention, language, social relating, and stereotypical behaviours in children with autistic disorder.

This study aimed to investigate the relationships between abilities to initiate and respond to joint attention and symptoms of autism that have, and have not, been theoretically linked to joint attention. Participants were 51 boys and five girls with autistic disorder, aged between 2 years and 6 years 5 months. Measures of joint attention behaviours, language, social relating, and stereotypical behaviour were administered during a single assessment. As predicted, the correlations between joint attention and the two behaviours theoretically linked to joint attention (i.e. social relating and la

Cyproheptadine in the treatment of autistic disorder: a double-blind placebo-controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Autism is a childhood-onset disorder of unknown, possibly of multiple aetiologies. The core symptoms of autism are abnormalities in social interaction, communication and behaviour. The involvement of neurotransmitters such as 5-HT has been suggested in neuropsychiatric disorders and particularly in autistic disorder. Increased platelet 5-HT levels were found in 40% of the autistic population, suggesting that hyperserotonaemia may be a pathologic factor in infantile autism. Therefore, it is of interest to assess the efficacy of cyproheptadine, a 5-HT2 antagonist in the treatment of a

Leo Kanner: his years in Berlin, 1906-24. The roots of autistic disorder.

By providing the first description of infantile autism Leo Kanner (1894-1981) has substantially influenced the field of child and adolescent psychiatry. The classification of the disorder seems to be evolving with progress in clinical and diagnostic research, epidemiology and genetics. In the current classification systems of ICD-10 and DSM-IV, Kanner's name is merely mentioned, in contrast to other specified pervasive developmental disorders. This article draws attention to Kanner's early scientific career at Berlin's Charité University Hospital which ended in 1924 with Kanner's emigration to

Clinical correlates of brain morphometric features of subjects with low-functioning autistic disorder.

Numerous neuropathologic and imaging studies have reported different structural abnormalities in the brains of autistic subjects. However, whether or not the degree of brain abnormality is correlated with the severity of developmental impairment in autistic disorder is still unknown. The midsagittal area of the cerebrum, corpus callosum, midbrain, cerebellar vermis, and vermal lobules VI and VII was measured by means of magnetic resonance imaging in 22 boys with low-functioning autistic disorder and in 11 age-matched normal controls. Morphometric measures were statistically compared between gr

Autistic disorder versus other pervasive developmental disorders in young children: same or different?

Eighteen preschool children diagnosed according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Third Edition Revised (DSM III-R) as having Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) were compared to 176 children with DSM III-R Autistic Disorder (AD), and to 311 non-autistic children with developmental language disorders (DLD) (N = 201) or low IQ (N = 110). All children were partitioned into "high" and "low" cognitive subgroups at a nonverbal IQ of 80. Within cognitive subgroups, the 18 PDD-NOS children did not differ significantly from either the DLD or th

Peek-a-boo fragile site at 16d associated with Tourette syndrome, bipolar disorder, autistic disorder, and mental retardation.

Five patients with a fragile site at 16q22-23 and neuropsychiatric disorders are reported. Three of five had Tourette disorder, three had mental retardation, two had bipolar disorder, and one had autistic disorder. During our attempts to study the fragile sites in more detail we were unable to reproduce the fragile sites found several years earlier. The potential relationship between the fragile sites and the neuropsychiatric disorders in these patients is discussed. Am. J. Med. Genet. (Neuropsychiatr. Genet.) 96:69-73, 2000.

Epidural Anesthesia, Intrapartum Use of Synthetic Oxytocin and the Odds of Autistic Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Epidural anesthesia (LEA) can block the Ferguson reflex, which stimulates the release of maternal oxytocin during labor. LEA may increase the need for synthetic oxytocin (sOT) to augment labor. Recent research has demonstrated an association between a elevated odds of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and higher doses and durations of sOT. AIMS: To examine the associations between the duration of LEA, sOT dosing, the duration of sOT exposure, and a diagnosis of ASD. METHODS: Delivery data from 115 adolescents with ASD were compared to a reference population of 114 adolescents withou

Self-Focused Attention and Depressive Symptoms in Adults with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Adults with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) are at high risk of developing comorbid depressive symptoms and in the general population self-focused attention has been associated with depression. Here, we aimed to examine the relationships between aspects of self-focused attention and symptoms of depression in individuals with a diagnosis of ASD. 113 adults with a diagnosis of ASD completed self-report questionnaires. Results found that higher levels of brooding, and to a lesser degree, reflection predicted increased depressive symptoms. However, higher levels of private self-consciousness actu

The economic consequences of autistic spectrum disorder among children in a Swedish municipality.

In this study, the societal economic consequences of autistic spectrum disorder were investigated using a sample of parents of children identified with the disorder and living in a Swedish municipality. Cost information was collected using a postal questionnaire that was developed through experiences gained from an earlier study. Using conservative assumptions, the additional societal cost due to the disorder was estimated to be approximately 50,000 annually per child. Parents of children with the disorder spent an average of about 1000 hours per year additionally caring for and supporting the

Examining the relationship between executive functions and restricted, repetitive symptoms of Autistic Disorder.

The executive function theory was utilized to examine the relationship between cognitive process and the restricted, repetitive symptoms of Autistic Disorder (AD). Seventeen adults with AD were compared to 17 nonautistic controls on a new executive function battery (Delis-Kaplin Executive Function Scales). Restricted, repetitive symptoms were measured by a variety of instruments (i.e., the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised, Gilliam Autism Rating Scale, and the Aberrant Behavior Checklist). The study replicated the executive function profile that has be

Case report: autistic disorder and chromosomal abnormality 46, XX duplication (4) p12-p13.

We report an 18-year-old female with a diagnosis of DSM-IV Autistic Disorder and moderate to severe mental retardation who was discovered to have a previously undescribed chromosomal abnormality 46, XX, duplication (4) p12-p13. We discuss her history and diagnosis, noting that the co-occurrence of her diagnoses have not previously been documented. The report adds to the literature supporting the argument that individuals with autistic spectrum disorders should be re-examined for chromosomal abnormalities.

An automated electronic method for quantifying spinning (circling) in children with autistic disorder.

This pilot study examined and quantified rotational asymmetry (the tendency to turn preferentially to the right or left side). An automated device was used to measure turning (circling) in 9 children with autism and 27 normal control subjects and confirmed clinical observations of stereotypical spinning behavior in patients with autism. This behavior was significantly preferential toward the left side relative to control subjects (P = 0.0009, two-tailed). Group membership accounted for approximately 40% of variance. Although the precise causes of autism are not known, these preliminary data su
