Previously we have shown that food-deprived male and female rats inhibit food consumption when presented with a discrete conditioned stimulus that signals danger. Here, in a series of three experiments, we examined whether contextual conditioned stimuli can exert the same effect. Experiment 1 paired a distinct context with footshocks, to examine food intake in food-deprived rats upon re-exposure to the context. Experiment 2 used a discrimination protocol with two alternating contexts; rats were given food in one, and received footshocks in the other. This protocol allowed us to monitor food co

Trypophobia, an aversion to clustered patterns such as lotus seed pods or honeycombs, has been increasingly recognised as a condition associated with both fear and disgust. Despite its prevalence and significant functional impairment, few studies have examined effective treatments. The current study developed and evaluated a novel One-Session Treatment (OST) for trypophobia designed to target both emotional components. Traditional OST, an intensive cognitive-behavioural therapy combining psychoeducation, cognitive challenges, modelling, and exposure, was augmented with counterconditioning (pai

Sensory food aversion, an early childhood eating disorder, is a serious, permanent form of picky eating, in which the infant or the child consistently and persistently refuses certain foods based on specific characteristics, following one or more previous aversive experiences. Biological (sensory processing disorder, taste sensitivity) and environmental factors contribute to its development. Due to limited diet, specific dietary deficiencies may occur but weight gain is usually normal. Behavioral problems, anxiety disorder, autism spectrum disorder are often associated. Diagnosis can usually b

OBJECTIVE: Misophonia is a condition characterized by the dislike or hatred (miso) of specific sounds (phonia) that results in an extreme emotional response. There has been growing interest in misophonia, with emerging evidence from neurodevelopmental populations and ongoing debate regarding the psychiatric classification and the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon. This is the first article to report on misophonic experiences and associated clinical characteristics in young people with tic disorders.
METHOD: In this article, we present the cases of 12 children and young people with tic dis

Barrett's esophagus is the premalignant lesion of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and gastric cardia, two rapidly increasing incidence cancers. Barrett's esophagus has been documented to be reversed with a combination of pharmacologic acid control or antireflux surgery and endoscopic ablative therapy. A variety of endoscopic techniques can be applied to ablate the Barrett's epithelium. With sufficient acid reduction, squamous repopulation of the injured area occurs. This injury can be accomplished using laser, photodynamic therapy, electrocautery, and mechanical techniques. The relative succes

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) was originally designed as a treatment of emotionally dysregulated, impulsive, and dramatic disorders (e.g., borderline personality disorder) and populations (e.g., parasuicidal women). However, a number of complex disorders represent the dialectical opposite of BPD and related disorders; these disorders are characterized by being overcontrolled, emotionally constricted, perfectionistic, and highly risk-averse. In this article, the authors introduce a recent adaptation of DBT that targets cognitive-behavioral rigidity and emotional constriction and illustrate

One of the most challenging developments in recent historical studies and in empirical research in sociology has been constructionist theories relating to "sexual personalities." The "constructionist" view is that sexual identity is labile and can be therapeutically modified. In clinical work, this has presented an alternative view of the development of social sex-role and sexual orientation. Previously, views of sexual identity as a fixed personal characteristic (the "essentialist" view) provided clinicians with ways of treating psychologically distressed people either by transsexual conversi

The aim of this study is to assess if changes in dysfunctional beliefs and self-efficacy precede changes in panic apprehension in the treatment of panic disorder with agoraphobia. Subjects participated in a larger study comparing the effectiveness of cognitive restructuring and exposure. Four variables were measured: (a) the strength of each subject's main belief toward the consequence of a panic attack; (b) perceived self-efficacy to control a panic attack in the presence of panicogenic body sensations; (c) perceived self-efficacy to control a panic attack in the presence of panicogenic thoug

Imagery Rescripting (ImRs) is a transdiagnostic technique to treat aversive memories of real (traumatic) experiences, or of aversive fantasies, such as nightmares and future projections. ImRs is getting increasingly popular, and can be used either as a standalone treatment or as part of treatment packages consisting of different techniques. It has been more than 25 years ago that a detailed treatment protocol of Imagery Rescripting (ImRs) was published (Arntz, A., & Weertman, A. (1999). Treatment of childhood memories; theory and practice. Behaviour Research and Therapy, 37(8), 715-740). New c

BACKGROUND: Recent advances in the field of acetaldehyde (AcH) research have raised the need for a comprehensive review on the role of AcH in the actions of alcohol. This update is an attempt to summarize the available AcH research.
METHODS: The descriptive part of this article covers not only recent research but also the development of the field. Special emphasis is placed on mechanistic analyses, new hypotheses, and conclusions.
RESULTS: Elevated AcH during alcohol intoxication causes alcohol sensitivity, which involves vasodilation associated with increased skin temperature, subjective fe

Median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS), also known as celiac artery compression syndrome, is a rare gastrointestinal condition with an estimated incidence of 2 per 100 000 population. Predominantly in female patients, this syndrome is characterized by the compression of the celiac artery at its origin from the aorta by the median arcuate ligament, which at the same time is entrapping the celiac plexus, causing upper abdominal pain, notably postprandial pain, as well as nausea, vomiting, food aversion, and weight loss. We present a case of abdominal pain secondary to MALS that was appropriatel

Substance use disorders (SUD) are a significant threat to both individual and public health. To date, SUD pharmacotherapy has focused primarily on agonist medications (i.e. nicotine replacement therapy for tobacco use disorder; methadone and buprenorphine for opioid use disorder), antagonist medications (i.e. naltrexone for opioid use disorder), and aversive therapy (i.e. disulfiram for alcohol use disorder). Pharmacotherapeutic approaches utilizing an immunological framework for medication development represent an important focus of study for treatment of these illnesses. Areas covered: This

We report two female patients with a history of alcohol abuse presenting with proximal painful muscle weakness following aversion therapy with emetine hydrochloride. Muscle biopsy of Case 1 showed a reversible floccular-shaped loss of myosin ATPase and dehydrogenase, an accumulation of PAS positive material, and a normal lipid content. Repeat biopsy showed core change with no focal loss of myosin ATPase. In Case 2, muscle biopsy was taken 1 month after commencement of emetine therapy and revealed similar but milder changes to Case 1. Electron microscopy revealed Z-band streaming with a decreas

Mesenteric ischaemia is a rare cause of abdominal pain caused by a reduction in blood flow to the small or large bowel. It typically has a non-specific clinical presentation, which causes diagnostic delays, that have a major impact on clinical outcome, resulting in high disease morbidity and death. Acute mesenteric ischemia is a life-threatening illness that necessitates high clinical suspicion and early imaging examination for accurate diagnosis. Chronic mesenteric ischemia caused by atherosclerotic arterial disease can result in severe patient morbidity with postprandial pain and food aversi

In the 1970s Dr Selwyn Leeks, a registered psychiatrist set up a child and adolescent unit in the grounds of Lake Alice Hospital, a New Zealand psychiatric facility. The adolescents were not diagnosed as having mental disorders but were placed there for behavioural issues. They were controlled by "aversion therapy" and subjected to electroconvulsive therapy treatment, paraldehyde injections and other forms of abuse. A number of complaints followed, which led to Government inquiries and reports. In 1999 a class action was commenced which was settled by the Government making "ex gratia" payments

The effect of manipulating perceptions of the uncontrollability, unpredictability and dangerousness of a spider was assessed using both an imaginal and in vivo task involving an encounter with a spider. Participants were randomly assigned to one of eight conditions formed by the crossing of factors. Experimental manipulations of uncontrollability, unpredictability and dangerousness all had a significant effect on Task Related Spider Fear in the in vivo exposure task. Results indicated a greater effect on task related fear for in vivo exposure (R(2)=.258) compared to imaginal exposure (R(2)=.05

Treatment outcomes were compared for an intervention emphasizing reinforcement for abstinence from illicit drug use and an alternative intervention which combined the same reinforcement contingencies with aversive consequences for unauthorized drug use. Sixteen polydrug abusing methadone maintenance patients were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups. Both groups received the opportunity to take methadone doses away from the clinic (take-home dose) as reinforcement for submitting urines testing negative for illicit substances. A regular weekly take-home dose of methadone could be ea

Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a neuropsychiatric affective disorder that can develop after traumatic life-events. Exposure-based therapy is currently one of the most effective treatments for PTSD. However, exposure to traumatic stimuli is so aversive that a significant number of patients drop-out of therapy during the course of treatment. Among various attempts to develop novel therapies that bypass such aversiveness, neurofeedback appears promising. With neurofeedback, patients can unconsciously self-regulate brain activity via real-time monitoring and feedback of the E
