Association between untreated low back pain and injury proneness and confounding role of behavioral-health difficulties among younger adolescents: a population-based study.

PURPOSE: Low back pain (LPB) is mostly left untreated (LBPuntreated) and may increase the injury risk due to associated behavioral-health difficulties (BHDs) among adolescents. This study assessed the association between LBPuntreated (vs. treated LBP (LBPtreated)) and injuries and the mediating role of BHDs among younger adolescents (10-16 years). METHODS: This population-based study compared 328 adolescents with LBPuntreated (mean age = 13.7 ± 1.3) with 291 with LBPtreated (mean age = 13.3 ± 1.2) from north-eastern France. They completed a questionnaire collecting, at school-year end, socioe

The effect of electromyography-triggered electrical stimulation applied to the back extensors muscles on trunk balance and muscle thickness in individuals with complete thoracic spinal cord injury: A randomized controlled trial.

CONTEXT: Impaired activation of the paraspinal muscles in individuals with complete thoracic spinal cord injury (SCI) can result in trunk instability, difficulty performing functional transfers, and an increased risk of falls. Since trunk control plays a central role in seated balance, it has a substantial impact on the ability to carry out activities of daily living and maintain independence. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effect of electromyography-triggered neuromuscular electrical stimulation (EMG-NMES) applied to multifidus and erector spinae muscles on trunk balance and

Industrial injuries in a plant.

This is a five year study of types of lost-time industrial injuries in a plant dealing with paper manufacturing and timber production. Back injuries accounted for 26% of all lost-time work accidents. Thirty-three point six percent of all back injuries were due to lifting or pulling of timbers at work. This occurred mainly in the timber yard of the plant where heavy manual work occurred. Males up to the age of 35 accounted for about 60% of back injuries. They have a higher tendency to injure their backs than do older males who were longer and more experienced workers. Back injuries were uncommo

Test-retest reliability [corrected] of center of pressure measures of postural stability during quiet standing in a group with musculoskeletal disorders consisting of low back pain, anterior cruciate ligament injury and functional ankle instability.

Reliability is a population-specific property, but to the authors' knowledge there has been no study to determine the test-retest reliability of the postural stability measures such as center of pressure (COP) measures in the population of patients with musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), while their clinical applications have been presented in literature. So, 33 patients with low back pain (LBP), anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and functional ankle instability (FAI) randomly completed postural measurements with three levels of difficulty (rigid surface-eyes open, rigid surface-eyes clos

Low back pain in young athletes.

CONTEXT: Low back pain in young athletes is a common complaint and should be taken seriously. It frequently results from a structural injury that requires a high degree of suspicion to diagnose and treat appropriately. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A Medline search was conducted from 1996 to May 2008 using the search terms "low back pain in children" and "low back pain in athletes." Known texts on injuries in young athletes were also reviewed. References in retrieved articles were additionally searched for relevant articles. Sources were included if they contained information regarding diagnosis and

Lower extremity alignment and risk of overuse injuries in runners.

A group of 304 runners enrolling in a marathon training program had alignment measurements performed and completed a questionnaire on training practices and injuries over the previous 12 months. The alignment measures consisted of arch index (AI), heel valgus (HV), knee tubercle-sulcus angle (TSA), knee varus (KV), and leg-length difference (LLD). Results indicated few consistent statistical associations between these alignment measures and risk of injuries, either bivariately or multivariately: left AI with hamstring injuries; right AI with shin injuries; right HV with back injuries; left TSA

[Characteristic of the fractures of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae in the victims of a traffic accident found in the passenger compartment of a modern motor vehicle].

The objective of the present work was to study peculiar features of the injuries to three spinal regions in the victims of a head-on car collision found in the passenger compartments of modern motor vehicles equipped with seat belts and other safety means. It was shown that most frequent fatal injuries to the driver include the fractures of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae. These injuries are much less frequent in the passengers occupying the front and the right back seats. The multilayer and multiple character of the fractures in different parts of the spinal column in the car dri

Back to basics with ProFlex.

Despite advances in tool and machine design and a growing emphasis on safety, the potential for certain painful and expensive occupational injuries continues in the workplace. Wrist and low-back injuries are a case in point. Low-back pain is clearly the most costly occupational health problem. About half of all back injuries result from poor lifting and handling techniques. In order to augment the effect of training and educating workers in lifting techniques, safety consultants have been suggesting that certain at-risk groups be provided with flexible, externally worn lower-back support.
