Adhesive interactions between voice prosthetic yeast and bacteria on silicone rubber in the absence and presence of saliva.

Biofilms on silicone rubber voice prostheses are the major cause for frequent failure and replacement of these devices. The presence of both bacterial strains and yeast has been suggested to be crucial for the development of voice prosthetic biofilms. Adhesive interactions between Candida albicans, Candida krusei, and Candida tropicalis with 14 bacterial strains, all isolated from explanted voice prostheses were investigated in a parallel plate flow chamber. Bacteria were first allowed to adhere to silicone rubber, after which the flow chamber was perfused with yeast, suspended either in saliv

pH-Responsive Smart Wettability Surface with Dual Bactericidal and Releasing Properties.

Biomaterial-associated infections caused by pathogenic bacteria have important implications on human health. This study presents the design and preparation of a smart surface with pH-responsive wettability. The smart surface exhibited synergistic antibacterial function, with high liquid repellency against bacterial adhesion and highly effective bactericidal activity. The wettability of the surface can switch reversibly between superhydrophobicity and hydrophobicity in response to pH; this controls bacterial adhesion and release. Besides, the deposited silver nanoparticles of the surface were a

A Review of Recent Progress in Synthetic Polymer Surface Coatings for the Prevention of Biofilm Formation.

Bacterial adhesion and the subsequent formation of biofilms and biofouling have significant economic and health impacts across all sectors. They are especially impactful in industrial corrosion, healthcare, food processing, agriculture, and waste and drinking water. Synthetic polymers that resist bacterial adhesion are adaptable to a wide range of applications in all of these fields. While there are many bacteria-resistant polymers, some of the best performing include polyethylene glycol (PEG), poly(oxazoline) (POZ), and zwitterionic polymers, with zwitterionic polymers showing the most promis

Antimicrobial potential of bioactive resin composites in caries management: a systematic review of in vitro studies.

INTRODUCTION: Secondary caries is the leading cause of failure in resin composite restorations due to biofilm accumulation. Bioactive resin composites (BRCs) release ions that promote remineralization and inhibit bacterial growth. This review compares microbial adhesion and antimicrobial effectiveness between BRCs and conventional resin composites. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in databases PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library to identify in vitro studies evaluating bacterial adhesion and antimicrobial effect of commercially available bioactive resin composites and their comparis

[In vivo and in vitro analysis of the ability of urinary catheter to microbial colonization].

Bacterial adhesion to biomaterials is a complex phenomenon involving numerous factors. The ability to reduce urinary catheters infections simply by general hygiene and asepsis is low: an ascending colonization cannot be avoided. This will lead to a clinical infection only if several factors favour the bacterial adhesion or the bacterial coaggregation and the feeding of the bacterial biofilm. Among the many factors involved in bacterial adhesion, we focused in this paper on the physical parameters of surface hydrophobicity of the urinary catheters (Van der Waals and acido-basic forces) and the

A low-shrinkage-stress and anti-bacterial adherent dental resin composite: physicochemical properties and biocompatibility.

Polymerisation shrinkage and biofilm accumulation are the two main problems associated with dental resin composites (DRCs) that induce secondary caries, which can cause restoration failure. Polymerisation shrinkage can lead to microleakage gaps between the tooth and the DRCs, causing the aggregation of bacteria and development of secondary caries. Reducing the shrinkage stress (SS) and improving the resistance to bacterial adhesion have always been the focus of this field in modifying DRCs. A thiol-ene resin system can effectively reduce the polymerisation SS via its step-growth mechanism for

Balancing Osseointegration and Infection Control: The Role of Titanium Surface Topography in Peri-Implant Biology.

BACKGROUND: Peri-implant infections remain a major cause of dental implant failure, largely due to bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation on implant surfaces. This study aimed to investigate how surface topography influences bacterial colonisation and osteoblastic response. METHODS: Titanium discs with machined (Ma), sandblasted, large-grit, and acid-etched (SLA), and nanostructured (Nano) surfaces were prepared, sterilised, and seeded with pre-differentiated dental follicle mesenchymal stem cells. Co-cultures with Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) and Streptococcus oralis (S. oralis) wer

Understanding urinary conditioning film components on ureteral stents: profiling protein components and evaluating their role in bacterial colonization.

Ureteral stents are fraught with problems. A conditioning film attaches to the stent surface within hours of implantation; however, differences between stent types and their role in promoting encrustation and bacterial adhesion and colonization remain to be elucidated. The present work shows that the most common components do not differ between stent types or patients with the same indwelling stent, and contain components that may drive stent encrustation. Furthermore, unlike what was previously thought, the presence of a conditioning film does not increase bacterial adhesion and colonization

[Topography and mechanisms of adhesion of uropathogenic Escherichia coli bacteria in the human kidney and renal pelvis].

The occurrence and significance of bacterial carbohydrate recognition proteins (bacterial lectins) and endogenous carbohydrate binding proteins (endogenous lectins) of human urothelium as well as kidney tubulus epithelium was analyzed with respect to the adhesion of urotoxogenic Escherichia coli bacteria. Using biotinylated neoglycoproteins, we demonstrated a wide spectrum of endogenous lectins with Galactose-, Mannose-, Fucose-, N-Acetylgalactosamine-, and N-Acetylglucosamine binding activities in the urothelium. In the kidney the distal nephron and especially the medullar collecting ducts ex

Bacterial Swimming and Accumulation on Endothelial Cell Surfaces.

Flagellar-driven locomotion plays a critical role in the bacterial attachment and colonization of surfaces, contributing to the risks of contamination and infection. Extensive efforts to uncover the underlying principles governing bacterial motility near surfaces have relied on idealized assumptions about surrounding artificial surfaces. However, in the context of living systems, the role of cells from tissues and organs becomes increasingly critical, particularly in bacterial swimming and adhesion, yet it remains poorly understood. Here, we propose using biological surfaces composed of vascul

Prevention of influenza virus induced bacterial superinfection by standardized Echinacea purpurea, via regulation of surface receptor expression in human bronchial epithelial cells.

Viral infections may predispose the airways to secondary bacterial infections that can lead to unfavorable progression of principally self-limiting illnesses. Such complicated respiratory infections include pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, acute otitis media, and sepsis, which cause high morbidity and lethality. Some of the pathogenic consequences of viral infections, like the expression of bacterial adhesion receptors and the disturbance of physical barrier integrity due to inflammation, may create permissive conditions for co-infections. Influenza virus A (H3N2) is a major pathogen that cau

Comparative evaluation of aggressiveness traits in staphylococcal strains from severe infections versus nasopharyngeal carriage.

Despite their commensal status, staphylococci can become problematic pathogens expressing multiple and redundant virulence factors. This study aimed to evaluate aggressiveness markers comparatively in staphylococcal strains isolated from severe infections versus asymptomatic carriage in order to identify clinically relevant bacterial traits that could easily be detected in clinical practice and could be suggestive for particular host-pathogen interactions such as cyto-adhesion or biofilm formation, ultimately orienting the clinical decision-making process. We have used in vitro phenotypic meth

Regulatory role of interfacial adhesion and mechanical microenvironments in microbe-host interactions.

A recent study published in Nature Communications showed that essential modulatory roles of interfacial adhesion and mechanical microenvironments such as geometric constraints and extracellular matrix stiffness, in microbe-host cell interactions. This study utilized single-cell force spectroscopy and RNA sequencing to gain insight into the intrinsic mechanisms by which the mechanical microenvironment regulates bacterial-host interactions and therefore reveal potential interventions against bacterial invasion. Meanwhile, the adhesion forces involved in the bacterial-host interactions were recog

Efficacy of Zinc-, Copper-, and Silver-Doped Fluorapatite as Bacteriophobic Surfaces for Percutaneous Osseointegrated Device Applications.

Percutaneous osseointegrated (OI) prosthetic systems offer superior exoprosthetic docking compared with traditional socket-based attachments; however, their clinical success remains limited by high superficial infection rates. These infections arise primarily from the absence of a stable epithelial seal at the implant-skin interface, permitting bacterial colonization of the stoma, particularly by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Fluorapatite (FAp) coatings have previously demonstrated potential to enhance epithelial integration, yet additional antimicrobial functionality could limit bacteria

Key topographic parameters driving surface adhesion of Porphyromonas gingivalis.

Dental implant failure is primarily due to peri-implantitis, a consequence of bacterial biofilm formation. Bacterial adhesion is strongly linked to micro-/nano-topographies of a surface; thus an assessment of surface texture parameters is essential to understand bacterial adhesion. In this study, mirror polished titanium samples (Ti6Al4V) were irradiated with a femtosecond laser (fs-L) at a wavelength of 1030 nm (infrared) with variable laser parameters (laser beam polarization, number, spacing and organization of the impacts). Images of 3-D topographies were obtained by focal variation micros
