Positive impact of a shelter-based hepatitis B vaccine program in homeless Baltimore children and adolescents.

Homeless youth are at increased risk for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and HBV vaccine coverage is poor in this group. The purpose of our study was to determine if a shelter-based HBV vaccine program in children and adolescents 2-18 years of age with a randomized controlled trial using a culturally appropriate HBV video could increase HBV vaccine coverage rates. Subjects were randomized to an 8 min HBV video or a control, smoking prevention video. Before exposure to the videos, HBV knowledge, and demographics were assessed in caregivers and adolescents. HBV vaccine no. 1 was offered to all

Serologic evidence for Rickettsia typhi and an ehrlichial agent in Norway rats from Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

We screened serum from 90 Norway rats trapped in East Baltimore, Maryland, USA, from April to November 2005 for antibodies against Rickettsia typhi and Ehrlichia chaffeensis. Six rats had positive titers of > or = 1:64 against R. typhi and did not react with R. akari. In addition, four rats had cross-reactive antibodies with titers of > or = 1:64 against Ehrlichia chaffeensis. Sera from these rats also cross-reacted with Anaplasma phagocytophilum or Ehrlichia muris. Our data indicate that the agent of murine typhus and ehrlichial agents are circulating in the Norway rat population in Baltimore

Proceedings of the Baltimore smooth muscle meeting: identifying research frontiers and priorities for the lower urinary tract.

PURPOSE: The myocyte is a major parenchymal cell of the lower urinary tract (LUT) in men and women. Significant phenotypic diversity ensures that myocytes subserve their important role in the physiologically distinct tissues and organs of the LUT, including the ureters, bladder, urethra, prostate, penis, vagina and myometrium. Coordinated contraction and relaxation of myocytes is required for normal organ function, while alterations in myocyte structure/function are implicated in the etiology of various LUT diseases/disorders. LUT diseases/disorders will continue to increase in an ever aging A

Risk factors associated with antibodies to leptospires in inner-city residents of Baltimore: a protective role for cats.

Leptospiral antibody prevalence was 16% in residents of Baltimore. Seropositivity was associated with age, gender, race, and bird ownership, reduced the antibody risk associated with age and race from odds ratios (95% confidence interval) of 3.3 (2.0, 5.5) and 3.3 (1.1, 9.3), respectively, to the baseline level. These data establish the high prevalence of leptospiral antibody in Baltimore and suggest a protective role for cats in reducing the risk of human infection.

Beyond Individual Risk: A Qualitative Exploration of Intersectional HIV Vulnerabilities Among Black Cisgender Women in Baltimore.

Black cisgender women in the USA experience compounded challenges in protecting themselves from HIV. While prevention efforts often focus on individual-level behaviors, structural and contextual factors critically shape HIV vulnerability and access to care. We conducted qualitative in-depth interviews between October 2021 and April 2023 with 26 Black cisgender women aged 18 to 44 who reported inconsistent condom use and vaginal or anal sex with a male partner in the past 6 months. We used a combined inductive and deductive approach to analyze the data and presented illustrative themes across B

Baltimore oral epidemiology, disease effects, and HIV evaluation study (BEEHIVE) study protocol: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: As antiretroviral therapy has become widely available and highly effective, HIV has evolved to a manageable, chronic disease. Despite this health advancement, people living with HIV (PLWH) are at an increased risk for age-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) compared to HIV-uninfected individuals. Similarly, PLWH are at an increased risk for selected oral diseases. PLWH with a history of injecting drugs experience an even greater burden of disease than their counterparts. The overall objective of the Baltimore Oral Epidemiology, Disease Effects, and HIV Evaluation (BEEHIVE) stu

Syphilis Diagnosis After a Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, or HIV Diagnosis Among Reproductive-Aged Women in Baltimore, MD.

BACKGROUND: Syphilis incidence is increasing among reproductive-aged women, and previous sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a risk factor for subsequent STIs. This study aimed to determine syphilis incidence after a chlamydia, gonorrhea, or HIV diagnosis, and identify characteristics associated with higher syphilis incidence rates among reproductive-aged women in 1 mid-Atlantic city. METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 85,113 chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV diagnoses occurring between 2009 and 2021 and among women aged 13 to 50 years was constructed using public health surveillance data.

Prevalence and correlates of SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity among people who inject drugs in Baltimore, Maryland.

BACKGROUND: SARS-CoV-2 serosurveys can help characterize disparities in SARS-CoV-2 infection and identify gaps in population immunity. Data on SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence among people who inject drugs (PWID) are limited. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study between December 2020 and July 2022 among 561 participants in the AIDS Linked to the IntraVenous Experience (ALIVE) study-a community-based cohort of current and former PWID in Baltimore, Maryland. Characterizing Health Care Access among Cisgender Female Sex Workers with Substance Use Histories in Baltimore, Maryland.

Cisgender female sex workers (FSW) have low rates of health care utilization and persistent health disparities. The study uses baseline data from a structural intervention to understand health care access with cisgender FSW with substance use histories (N=370) in Baltimore, Maryland. The four outcome categories measuring health care access in the past six months were: no health care use/barrier to care (16% of sample), no use/no barrier (24%), use/barrier (25%), use/no barrier (36%, most able to access care). Using multinomial logistic regression, we found client-perpetrated violence, depressi

More than just availability: Who has access and who administers take-home naloxone in Baltimore, MD.

BACKGROUND: Fatal opioid overdose is a pressing public health concern in the United States. Addressing barriers and augmenting facilitators to take-home naloxone (THN) access and administration could expand program reach in preventing fatal overdoses. METHODS: THN access (i.e., being prescribed or receiving THN) was assessed in a Baltimore, Maryland-based sample of 577 people who use opioids (PWUO) and had a history of injecting drugs. A sub-analysis examined correlates of THN administration among those with THN access and who witnessed an overdose (N = 345). Logistic generalized estimating e

Where does the neighborhood go? Trust, social engagement, and health among older adults in Baltimore City.

Trust is often cited as a necessary predecessor of social engagement, and a public-health good. We question those suppositions through analysis of the life histories of lower-income older adults aging in place in Baltimore. These people desired to continue living independently, but also expressed a complex mix of trust and mistrust in their neighbors, neighborhoods, and broader environments. This was the product of interrelated processes of multilevel physical and social changes over time and space - and, we argue, often featured a "healthy mistrust" that pushed participants to pursue personal

Substance Use Treatment Retention after Redesign of a Comprehensive Addiction and Pregnancy Program in Baltimore, Maryland.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use disorder (SUD) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality among perinatal people. Integrated perinatal SUD treatment programs (SUD, obstetrics, mental health, and other services) show promising improvements in SUD and perinatal outcomes. This study describes the redesign of an integrated perinatal SUD treatment program that partnered with a community-based recovery housing facility to integrate clinical and social services and evaluated the impact of this redesign on several indices of treatment retention. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used health

Development of a Locator Tool and Protocol to Support People Living With HIV in Baltimore: A Quality Improvement Project.

Retaining people with HIV (PWH) in medical care is crucial to ending HIV as an epidemic. Many PWH in Baltimore also experience high rates of substance use, mental health disorders, and homelessness, making it difficult to locate and engage them in care. In our hospital-to-community transitional care program for PWH, 50% of clients were lost to follow-up. To increase the percentage of engaged patients, we developed a locator tool and protocol detailing patient's social and personal information, to be used when clients could not otherwise be located. We obtained completed locator tools on 85% of

Physical activity complexity, cognition, and risk of cognitive impairment and dementia in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging.

INTRODUCTION: Studies on physical activity (PA) and dementia mainly focus on activity quantity or intensity. Yet PA requires neuro-coordination of movement, and it is unclear whether complexity of daily activity varies by cognitive status. Thus, we examined the association between PA complexity, using multiscale entropy, and cognitive function, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and dementia in older adults in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA). METHODS: A total of 637 older adults (age 73.9 ± 11.3 years) in the BLSA completed a 7-day wrist-worn accelerometer assessment and neurop

Baltimore community resident and collaborator perspectives on the influence of guaranteed income on health: a formative qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Given increased interest and investment in guaranteed income initiatives across North America, it is critical to understand the impact of guaranteed income on health, an understudied outcome. As part of Baltimore, Maryland's guaranteed income pilot, we conducted formative research to understand the influence of increased income on health and develop concrete recommendations for implementation and evaluation of the pilot. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with Baltimore community residents (n = 8) and community collaborators (n = 8), probing on familiarity w

The Baltimore Classification of Viruses 50 Years Later: How Does It Stand in the Light of Virus Evolution?

Fifty years ago, David Baltimore published a brief conceptual paper delineating the classification of viruses by the routes of genome expression. The six "Baltimore classes" of viruses, with a subsequently added 7th class, became the conceptual framework for the development of virology during the next five decades. During this time, it became clear that the Baltimore classes, with relatively minor additions, indeed cover the diversity of virus genome expression schemes that also define the replication cycles. Here, we examine the status of the Baltimore classes 50 years after their advent and

The Baltimore Buprenorphine Initiative: understanding the role of buprenorphine in addressing heroin addiction in an urban-based community.

Adequate drug treatment for substance users continues to be a challenge for most U.S. cities. To address heroin addiction in Baltimore, the Baltimore Buprenorphine Initiative was implemented as a joint project to promote individualized, patient-centered buprenorphine therapy in conjunction with behavioral treatment to accelerate recovery from opioid addiction. The purpose of this analysis was to explore differences in recovery trajectories predicting length of stay and use this information to predict characteristics that influence an individual's ability to remain in the Baltimore Buprenorphin

Racial differences in rate of decline in bone mass in older men: the Baltimore men's osteoporosis study.

UNLABELLED: Older black men have higher adjusted BMD than older white men. Using data from a longitudinal cohort study of older men followed for a mean of 18.8 +/- 6.5 (SD) months, we found that older black men have a higher rate of decline in femoral neck and total hip BMD and femoral neck BMAD than older white men. INTRODUCTION: Older black men have higher adjusted BMD compared with older white men. The difference in BMD may be caused by having attained higher peak bone mass as young adults and/or having a slower rate of decline in bone mass as adults. There are few published longitudinal d
