Clinical characteristics of patients undergoing primary bariatric surgery in the United Kingdom based on the National Bariatric Surgery Registry.

Baseline demographic characteristics and operations undertaken for patients having bariatric surgery in the United Kingdom are largely unknown. This study aimed to describe the profile of patients having primary bariatric surgery in the National Health Service (NHS) or by self-pay, and associated operations performed for both pathways. The National Bariatric Surgery Registry dataset for 5 years between January 2015 and December 2019 was used. 34 580 patients underwent primary bariatric surgery, of which 75.9% were NHS patients. Mean patient age and initial body mass index were significantly hi

What patient factors influence bariatric surgery outcomes? A multiple regression analysis of Ontario Bariatric Registry data.

BACKGROUND: As bariatric surgery evolves and gains popularity, statistical analysis of its outcomes could improve the process of decision-making and risk assessment. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of age and other factors on bariatric surgery outcomes in order to improve patient selection and outcomes. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Ontario Bariatric Registry to evaluate the influence of age and 10 other factors on early (< 90 d) and 1-year surgical outcomes among patients aged 18 years or older who underwent laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) or laparoscopic sleeve

Risk factors for preterm birth in pregnancies following bariatric surgery: an analysis of the Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery-2.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery has been shown to increase the risk for preterm birth in a subsequent pregnancy. Determining factors that contribute to this heightened risk will inform the development of targeted interventions to improve birth outcomes postbariatric surgery. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify risk factors of preterm birth in pregnancies following bariatric surgery. Factors being considered were preoperative medical conditions and behaviors (e.g., obesity-associated co-morbidities, gastrointestinal symptoms, substance use), antenatal factors (e.g., prepregnancy body mass i

Metabolic syndrome prevalence and associations in a bariatric surgery cohort from the Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery-2 study.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome is associated with higher risk for cardiovascular disease, sleep apnea, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, all common conditions in patients referred for bariatric surgery, and it may predict early postoperative complications. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome, defined using updated National Cholesterol Education Program criteria, in adults undergoing bariatric surgery and compare the prevalence of baseline co-morbid conditions and select operative and 30-day postoperative outcomes by metabolic syndrome status. Bariatric endoscopy, care-curative medicine and legal conflicts. Spanish Bariatric Endoscopy Group (Gettemo-SEED) Positioning.

Bariatric endoscopy treats obesity as a disease, in addition to its multiple associated comorbidities, so it should be considered in the "care-curative" field and not as "satisfying, voluntary or outcoming" medicine. Insufficient weight loss cases, or complications may occur. This, in parallel with the greater diffusion of these techniques, results an increase in the risk of complaints and judicial claims, which will presumably grow during next years. In this sense, we consider that all Bariatric Endoscopic Units working with medical-scientific rigor, must be able to be accredited and have leg

Antiallergic Treatment of Bariatric Patients: Potentially Hampered Solubility/Dissolution and Bioavailability of Loratadine, but Not Desloratadine, Post-Bariatric Surgery.

Gastrointestinal anatomical/physiological changes after bariatric surgery influence variables affecting the fate of drugs after ingestion, and medication management of these patients requires a thorough and complex mechanistic analysis. The aim of this research was to study whether loratadine/desloratadine antiallergic treatment of bariatric patients is at risk of being ineffective due to impaired solubility/dissolution. The pH-dependent solubility of loratadine/desloratadine was studied in vitro, as well as ex vivo, in gastric content aspirated from patients before versus after bariatric surg

Concomitant Cholecystectomy for Asymptomatic Gallstones in Bariatric Surgery-Safety Profile and Feasibility in a Large Tertiary Referral Bariatric Center.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a risk factor for gallstone formation, which can be exacerbated by bariatric surgery-induced rapid weight loss. Current guidelines do not recommend concomitant cholecystectomy (CC) for asymptomatic gallstones during the bariatric surgery procedure. However, long-term follow-up studies have shown that the incidence of post-bariatric surgery symptomatic gallstones necessitating therapeutic cholecystectomy increases to 40%. Therefore, some surgeons advocate simultaneous cholecystectomy during the bariatric surgery for asymptomatic individuals. This study aims to evaluate th

A Survey of Bariatric Surgical and Reproductive Health Professionals' Knowledge and Provision of Contraception to Reproductive-Aged Bariatric Surgical Patients.

BACKGROUND: Over 80 % of bariatric surgical patients are women with obesity in their reproductive years. Obesity adversely affects fertility; the rapid weight loss following bariatric surgery can increase fecundity. Current guidelines recommend avoiding pregnancy for up to 24 months following surgery, but little is known about current contraceptive care of women who undergo bariatric surgery. Two surveys were undertaken with bariatric surgical and contraceptive practitioners in England to establish current contraceptive practices in both groups. METHODS: Two anonymous on-line surveys were sen

Unplanned interventions following bariatric surgery: first cohort outcomes from the National Emergency Bariatric Surgery Audit (NEBSA).

BACKGROUND: Despite the increasing volume of bariatric surgery, patterns of management following complications are poorly characterized in national datasets. We present the UK data collected by the National Emergency Bariatric Surgery Audit on patient characteristics following treatment for bariatric surgery complications, concentrating on 30-day mortality, complication severity, threshold for intensive care unit (ITU)/ high dependency unit (HDU) care, and postoperative follow-up. These data seek to inform the design of new clinical studies, support service development, and address surgical tr

Maternal and neonatal outcomes after bariatric surgery in pregnancy: a cohort study comparing women with and without prior bariatric surgery.

Pregnant women with obesity are at increased risk of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes, including gestational diabetes and hypertensive disorders. Although bariatric surgery is an effective long-term treatment for obesity, its effects on pregnancy and postpartum outcomes remain incompletely understood. This retrospective cohort study aimed to evaluate the impact of bariatric surgery on maternal and neonatal outcomes. The study was conducted between May 2022 and January 2024 at national obesity and healthcare clinics and included 170 pregnant women, of whom 87 had a history of bariatric su

Complications after bariatric surgery: A multicentric study of 11,568 patients from Indian bariatric surgery outcomes reporting group.

BACKGROUND: Complications after bariatric surgery are not uncommon occurrences that influence the choice of operations both by patients and by surgeons. Complications may be classified as intra-operative, early (<30 days post-operatively) or late (beyond 30 days). The prevalence of complications is influenced by the sample size, surgeon's experience and length and percentage of follow-up. There are no multicentric reports of post-bariatric complications from India. OBJECTIVES: To examine the various complications after different bariatric operations that currently performed in India. Clinical Practice Guidelines for Childbearing Female Candidates for Bariatric Surgery, Pregnancy, and Post-partum Management After Bariatric Surgery.

Emerging evidence suggests that bariatric surgery improves pregnancy outcomes of women with obesity by reducing the rates of gestational diabetes, pregnancy-induced hypertension, and macrosomia. However, it is associated with an increased risk of a small-for-gestational-age fetus and prematurity. Based on the work of a multidisciplinary task force, we propose clinical practice recommendations for pregnancy management following bariatric surgery. They are derived from a comprehensive review of the literature, existing guidelines, and expert opinion covering the preferred type of surgery for wom

Loneliness and Social Isolation Up to 5 Years after Bariatric Surgery in the Bariatric Experience Long Term (BELONG) Study.

BACKGROUND: There is a large body of research about physical complications following metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS); less is known about psychosocial sequelae that may adversely affect people’s lives after MBS such as loneliness and social isolation. This is important because loneliness and social isolation may affect health outcomes following MBS. METHODS: Patients preparing to have MBS in a large health system were surveyed before (baseline) and at years 1, 3, and 5 following MBS. A total of 1,338 had MBS and were included in follow-up surveys. Survey response rates were 75% (n = 998)

The Korean Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (KSMBS) Position Statement on Female Candidates of Reproductive Age for Metabolic Bariatric Surgery.

Obesity has emerged as a major global health issue. The ratio of male to female patients undergoing metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS) is 1:3.5. Although not as dramatic compared to the global trend, the rate of obesity in women of reproductive age in Korea has been steadily increasing over the past several decades. The impact of obesity on reproductive health and perinatal outcomes should be carefully considered when consulting female candidates of reproductive age for MBS. Obesity adversely affects reproductive health by causing menstrual irregularities, anovulation, subfertility, and increas

Selective COX-2 inhibitors after bariatric surgery: Celecoxib, etoricoxib and etodolac post-bariatric solubility/dissolution and pharmacokinetics.

Anatomical/physiological gastrointestinal changes after bariatric surgery may influence the fate of orally administered drugs.Since non-selective NSAIDs are not well-tolerated post-surgery, selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors may be important for these patients. In this work we investigated celecoxib, etoricoxib and etodolac, for impaired post-bariatric solubility/dissolution and absorption. Solubility was studied in-vitro, and ex-vivoin aspirated gastric contents from patients pre- vs. post-surgery. Dissolution was studied in conditions simulating pre- vs. post-surgery stomach. Fina

A feminist neomaterialist exploration of bariatric surgery in Canada.

Rates of bariatric (weight loss) surgery have risen sharply in recent years as interventions into fatness have become increasingly medicalized and debates surrounding it binarized. We adopted a feminist neomaterialist perspective to challenge binary framings of weight loss surgery experiences still dominating the field's conventional and critical approaches by thinking relationally about entanglements of discourse and materiality. Within our neomaterialist framework, we used conceptual tools from misfitting, debility, and affect theory to analyze interviews with 21 women residing in Canada who

Pregnancy considerations after metabolic and bariatric surgery.

The prevalence of obesity-and the number of patients seeking treatment for this chronic, progressive disease-continues to rise. Bariatric surgery has long been an effective management option. The population of patients who undergo metabolic weight loss procedures consists predominantly of women and demonstrates a decreasing mean age, and as a result, more patients are undergoing surgery during their reproductive years and subsequently pursuing pregnancy. Although pregnancy following bariatric surgery is associated with improved outcomes compared with pregnancies complicated by uncontrolled obe

Conversion of endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty to bariatric surgery.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) is increasingly utilized for treating obesity, but some patients may subsequently present for conversion to a surgical procedure. Foreign material or distorted anatomy may make conversion more challenging. The preoperative evaluation, intraoperative findings, and postoperative outcomes of converting ESG to bariatric surgery are not well described. METHODS: Bariatric surgery patients at a single center with history of ESG were identified by review of electronic medical records from 2016 to 2026.
